ACRYLIC RESINS
INTRODUCTION
The term “acrylic” resin is generally applied to the polymers and
coplolymers of esters of methacrylic and acrylic acid, which can structurally
be represented as follows

(POLYMETHACRYLATE) (POLYACRYLATE)
where R is the alkyl radical of the alcohol portion of the ester.
Frequently the copolymers of one or more of these esters with non-
acrylic monomers such as styrene, butadiene or vinyl acetate.
PROPERTIES OF ACRYLICS
The main properties of the acrylics used in coatings can be classified
into two main groups;
1.bulk properties of acrylics and mechanical properties
2.solution properties such as viscosity, solubility parameters etc..,
both the groups are influenced structurally by the polymers main chain
structure and the side chain alcoholic groups in the polymers.
Polymerization of Acrylic monomers
The major disadvantages are the high baking temperatures and short
storage stability. Resins have high acid contents and they are not
stable with basic extenders, chromates or pigments such as ZnO. They
are used in appliance finishes, automotive enamels, sheet and strip
coatings and clear coatings of copper and brass. Acrylic resins are also
used widely in home appliances and also in automotive finishing field.
They provide broader range of colors particularly metallic paints and
they improve the durability. Large quantities of thermosetting
polymers are used in Al sidings, coil coatings, pre-fabricated panels
for the building industries. Characteristic properties of these coatings
are,
