1.0 GENERAL

o Preface
¾ BW-LL(LR)125 Lifeboat Winch is a special life-saving appliance installed on the
oil platform and ship for launching, recovering & stowing a totally enclosed
lifeboat.
¾ This manual describes the main performance, use, and maintenance of the
BW-LL(LR)125 Lifeboat Winch.

DA
o Rules Requirements
¾ The design of this Boat Winch conforms to the requirements of “International
Life-Saving Appliance Codes” adopted at the 66th session of IMO Maritime
Safety Committee and IMO Resolution MSC.81 (70) “Testing Of Life-Saving

LA
Appliance”, and also has been approved by classification societies.
¾ Lowering of the lifeboat is dependent on its own gravity with no need of any other
power.
¾ Operator(s) within the lifeboat can control the Counter Weight of the Boat Winch
by means of the remote control ropes so as to lower or stop the lifeboat.

RO
o Main Parameters:

1. Type: BW-LL(LR)125 is a Lifeboat Winch.

NT
2. Max Working Load of the Boat Winch: 125KN (28101.00 lbs)
3. Max Hoisting Load of the Boat Winch: 100KN (22481.00 lbs) (Low Speed);
68KN (15287.00 lbs) (High Speed)
4. Brake Setting Load of the Boat Winch: 125KN (28101.00 lbs)
5. Rope Hoisting Speed (on the 2nd layer): ≥6m/min (19.69 ft/min); ≥6m/min
CO

(19.69 ft/min) / ≥18m/min (59.06 ft/min)

6. Rope Lowering Speed (on the 2nd layer): About 40~ 60m/min (131.23 ft –
196.85 ft)
7. Diameter of Wire Rope: ∅26mm (0.09 ft)
8. Wire Storage Capacity on each Drum: 60m (196.85 ft)
9. Main Construction and Features:
9 This Boat Winch mainly consists of: Reduction Gear Unit,
A

Speed-Limiting Device, Brake – Clutch Mechanism and Manual

Operating Device Etc.
PI

9 When the Brake Counterweight of the Boat Winch is in the braking

position, the electric motor rotates only in the hoisting direction of the
boat. This prevents electric motor damage that could be caused by
rotating in opposite direction.
9 When hoisting the boat in the manual mode, the manual handle should
CO

be removed, when this operation is finished.

2.0 OPERATING THE LIFEBOAT WINCH

WARNING: THIS BOAT WINCH MUST BE OPERATED BY PERSON(S) WHO HAVE BEEN
SPECIALLY TRAINED IN ITS USE.

NOTE: Mounting Precautions:

The Boat Winch should be mounted strictly based on the documentation supplied,

DA
including the wiring of Electric Motor and Control Box.
The Gear Box must be filled with enough lubricating oil prior to starting the Boat Winch.
The designation number of the Lubricating Oil is N68*(GB443-84) or ISO VG68 or another
lubrication oil whose viscosity and other index are similar.

LA
o Operating Method
¾ Safety Notices at Operating: Before the lifeboat is hoisted in the manual mode, check that
every part is properly secured.
¾ When the lifeboat is to be hoisted by manual handle, insert and push forward the manual

RO
handle so as to make the end of the handle to engage with the shaft end of Driving Gear
Wheel I.

o Lowering Boat
¾ By means of raising the Brake Counterweight beside the Boat Winch or by remote control
NT
wires from a position within the lifeboat that allows the remote release of the braking
system, the lifeboat can be lowered down.
¾ If the counterweight is put down, the lifeboat will stop lowering immediately.
CO

o Recovering Boat
1. The operator(s) on the platform controlling the Boat Winch must observe the boat during
hoisting process till the boat is recovered to its stowed position. At this time, the Limit
Switches actuate to cut off the power to Boat Winch.
2. Provided the power is switched off abruptly during recovering the boat by electrical
means, the manual handle can be employed to finish the hoist.
3. When the lifeboat is recovered by high-speed means the number of passengers within
the lifeboat should be prohibited from exceeding six (6) persons. Otherwise, the
A

Electric Motor may be damaged due to over loading.

4. After completion of all operations, switch off the power to the Control Box.
PI

3.0 CHECKS, REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE

o Checks and Repair of Winch Brake System

¾ Check Winch Brake
CO

1. It’s a very important process to check the winch brake. Whether the brake is
reliably worked will directly affect the safety of passengers.
2. Normally the brake counterweight bar should be in a horizontal position, if it is not in
this position due to worn braking lining, the braking arm should be removed and
turned at an angle then re-mounted so as to make the counterweight bar back to its
horizontal position.
3. If there is oil leak at output shaft, replace its oil seals.
4. Periodically trial launching and recovering lifeboat at least once every month so as

to find problem and remove trouble. If damages or abnormal condition are found,
repair them immediately.
¾ Maintenance of the Winch Brake System
1. Often fill grease to turning shafts and all filling positions which are deemed
necessary (designation number of the lubricant oil is ZG-3 Calcium Base Grease).
2. When Boat Winch is not in use, cover it with canvas.

WARNING: Upon completion of manual operation of the Boat Winch, the manual handle
must be removed from the Winch Assembly.

DA
4.0 ELECTRIC CONTROL PANEL

ALERT: 1. Before the Lifeboat Winch System’s first operation, you must disconnect the bolt of the

LA
flange on the Hand Lifting Unit to release the Driving Gear I; then switch on the Electric Motor in
order to rotate in the hoisting direction. 2. With regard to the Life-Saving/Rescue Winch, the motor
should be respectively adjusted in high and low speed as to let the motor rotate in the hoisting
direction. Otherwise, the winch may be damaged.

RO
¾ Switch on the heater of the motor, then the indicator lights and heating starts.
¾ Switch on the lifeboat power, the indicator lights and provide 42V alternating current to
lifeboat.
¾ Hoisting the Lifeboat:
1. Life-Saving Winch
NT
a. Press down the knob, the hoisting starts.
b. When the lifeboat is hoisted to its highest position, the limit switch acts to break
off the control circuit of the motor, then the hoisting stops.
c. In case some trouble occurs in the electric control system during hoisting, the
CO

clutch should be disengaged as soon as possible, then switch off the main
power.

2. Life-Saving/Rescue Winch
¾ Press down the Low-Speed Knob, the low-speed hoisting starts.
¾ Press down on the High-Speed Knob, first the winch will start at low speed, then it
will work at high speed automatically.
3. When the lifeboat is hoisted to its highest position, the limit switch acts to break off the
A

control circuit of the motor, then the hoisting stops.

4. In case some trouble occurs in the electric control system during hoisting, the clutch
PI

should be disengaged as soon as possible, then switch off the main power.
5. When the operation is over, shut the power switch off to lest mistake operation by
somebody irrespective.

5.0 MAINTENANCE
CO
