Introduction
Under certain operating conditions and with a certain configuration the alarm function of
the oil mist detector (OMD) is not working properly.
This situation can only occur when the OMD exhaust pipe is connected to the engine
crankcase and the crankcase pressure is positive and the control air supply for the OMD
is closed. In some cases the OMD does not respond accordingly, meaning it does not
trigger the expected alarm OMD failure LED No.14: “negative pressure in the measuring
compartment too low”.
To ensure that the alarm function is working properly, an electronic pressure switch
upgrade kit is available for the oil mist detector types VN115/87plus and VN215/87plus.
The upgrade kit contains pressure sensors for complementing the current flow sensors.
Ordering
Contact your closest Wärtsilä Services Network. When ordering, please specify the

At first, some standard parts have to be dismounted to be able to apply the new pressure switch kit.
The following instructions will help to fit the kit on the lower section of the VISATRON VN87plus.
CAUTION! Power supply to the OMD needs to be de-energized. Pulling OMD’S main plug is
not enough!

Dismount the Venturi injector. Wrench size: 32 mm (Fig. 6)
Remove the present adapter ring from Venturi injector, but keep the sealings (Fig. 7)
Before assembly, check how to insert the pressure switch cable into the socket housing (Fig. 8). Depending
on situation on engine, there should be three free inlets given for cable insertion at OMD:
a) the left cable inlet at the lower side of the housing (Version A - recommended).
b) In case that the inlet is occupied by other cables, use alternatively the left or right side (Version B). The
additional adapter (included in kit) will be needed then, see Fig. 9.

Version B

Inlet right
Fig. 10 Fig. 11
For version “A” cut the pressure switch cable down to 260 mm. The cable length for version “B” (use the left
inlet) also is 260 mm. Only in case you use Inlet right (Fig.9), the full length of 500mm is required.
The new adapter ring is needed to be able to check the supply pressure.
Fig. 12 Fig. 13
Figure 12 shows the correct way of mounting the new adapter ring to the Venturi injector. Do not mount
it in another way!
When tightening the injector, make sure the visible thread always is looking to your face. (Fig. 12 – 13).

Connect the scavenging air hose to the adapter ring (Fig. 14, 15).
6.2.1 Version A
Fig. 16 Fig. 17
Remove the left lock screw from the socket and add the cable connector as shown in Fig. 17-18.
You can find the connector within the pressure switch parts.
Fig. 18 Fig. 19
Fasten the mounting plate and the socket housing onto the OMD’s base plate as shown in Fig. 19 (use
Loctite to fix the screws – included In kit).
Fig. 20 Fig. 21
Dismount the terminal board and remove the power supply cables at pins 1 & 2.
Fig. 22 Fig. 23
Connect the terminal clamps (included in kit) with the power supply and insert the pressure switch cable
through the socket (Fig 23-26)
Use the 3-pin clamp with the attached wire to connect to -24V GND and the 2-pin clamp to the +24V power
supply (refer to wiring diagram on page 2)
Fig. 24 Fig. 25
Fig. 26
Lock the gland and connect the pressure switch as shown in Chapter 4 “Wiring diagram” and go on by
following the instructions on Page 11.
6.2.2 Version B
If the standard inlet (as treated in Version A) is not free, just follow the steps to mount the kit.
Fig. 27 Fig. 28
The mounting plate can be fixed directly onto the base plate (use Loctite to fix the screws).
Fig. 29 Fig. 30
Connect the flexible hose to the adapter ring and the pressure switch, and then unscrew the terminal board
with the cables as shown on the next page (like in “Version A”).

Fig. 33
Use the 3-pin clamp with the attached wire to connect to -24V GND and the 2-pin clamp to the +24V power
supply (refer to wiring diagram on page 2)
Remove the original cable connection and install the adapter (Fig. 34-35)
Fig. 34 Fig. 35
After that, you can mount the new cable gland (Fig 36) and insert the pressure switch cable as shown.
Fig. 36 Fig. 37
After selecting the proper inlet, connect the pressure switch to the terminal clamps (Chapter 4, page 2).
Dismantle the cable in a length of 60mm and, each wire again for about 10mm; this is the optimal length for
the clamps (use the end sleeves for wires, Fig 42). If done, connect to the terminal board (Fig. 38-44)
60 mm

Version B: or:
Fig. 48 Fig. 49
The above 3 pictures show the pressure switch kit in all possible versions on the Visatron OMD.
Fig. 49 shows how the look of the kit is, if the left inlet of Version B is in use and the connection can’t be
done in the other way.
After plugging in the main connector and setting the OMD’s correct suction pressure, the “OK” LED will be
visible.
7. System Test
The pressure switch kit should only be tested when it is installed at the OMD.
If the “OK” or “air supply failure” LED will not work, check the wire connection in the socket housing.
Failure Remedy
- All LED’s are off - Power supply off (24V) Check power supply or wiring
- No correct wiring
- All LED’s are off - Electronic failure Exchange the switch
(OMD ready)
- Failure LED on / OK LED off - Low or no pressure Check pressure supply or if
(OMD off) pressure hose is installed
correctly
- Failure LED on / OK LED off - Electronic failure Exchange pressure switch
(OMD ready)
- OK LED on - No correct wiring Check wiring in terminal board or
(OMD off) - No power supply from exchange pressure switch
switch (defect)
- OK LED on - Electronic failure Exchange pressure switch
(OMD not ready)
