Design a small Dream Suite 2D floor plan view using SketchUp

This is an architectural design assignment. Your task is to design a 2D plan view (Top
view) for a small student apartment that can accommodate up to 2 people (you and
your partner), with the following features:

1. It can be no more than 750 Sq feet (remember to use Imperial measurement).

2. It has to have at two bedrooms.
3. It has to have a common room.
4. The common room should have a seating area (sofa(s) and a coffee table),
shelving unit to store books and games, large TV, and entertainment center.
5. The bedrooms must have a bed, and a study area (ex. Desk and chair).
6. The common room is combined with a kitchen with a counter + bar stools, or
table and chairs (“open concept” design). The kitchen must at least have
kitchen cabinets, a fridge, stove/oven and a sink.
7. There is at least one bathroom (toilet, sink, bathtub/shower combo).
8. The common room must have a walkout to the patio/balcony with sliding doors
(the size of the balcony is up to you and it DOES NOT count towards the square
footage of the condo design).
9. There should be a window in each bedroom (you determine the size of
window).
10.There should be a closet for coats by the main entrance, a bedroom closet for
clothes in each bedroom and a small linen closet anywhere else in the unit.
If you have room you can add a small storage area (for food, cleaning supplies,
miscellaneous items etc).
11. All walls must be correctly sized. Two of the walls must be exterior walls (you
decide which ones HINT: You cannot have a window on an interior wall). The
other walls will need to be interior walls (how many interior walls you will have
will depend on the shape that you make your condo). The interior wall thickness
is 6”. Outside and supporting walls are 10”.
12.You will need to do a bit of research to determine the standard size of items
such as exterior/interior doors, windows, sliding doors, stoves, fridges etc.
13. If you can come up with some bonus features, feel free to experiment (be
creative)!

Project Specifics and details

- Your 750 square feet is taken from outside walls to outside walls
measurements (make sure you dimension the outside walls on the drawing).
- Make sure all inside rooms are proportional sizes and you do not have
dimension them or label them for this project (unless you want to).
- Come up with a rough design idea using an Online Floor planner software or
just create a sketch. I will provide you with an online floor planner software link
but you can use whichever one you choose. Take a snap shot of this design (ex.
copy the image, save image, Ctrl-Print Screen), as you will need to add this
image to your final report. Most of these online floor planners will not allow
you to save this design unless you sign up.
- If you choose to draw a sketch you will need to take a picture and add it to your
report
- Then start working on your Floor Plan using Google SketchUp for Schools.
- You can use Google Warehouse to download any 2D component that you need
(couches, TV’s, stoves, etc). Remember to use the SCALE tool to resize them as
needed.
- For a plan view there are specific symbols for doors, windows etc. If you cannot
find these on Google Warehouse you will need to research to find the
architectural symbols and draw them in. HINT: Make sure to pay special
attention to the swing of the door. Use the swing of doors at your residence as
a reference(ex. Does the front door swing inwards or outwards).
- Once your floor plan is complete share it with me on google drive
- Then complete your Dream Suite Condo Floor plan and share this with me on
google drive
- MAKE sure that you check the rubric while creating your project and report
- You are done! I hope you enjoyed designing your own dream suite!

Use The DRAPE template to help with your design process

DRAPE: Definitions

DEFINE: The need is usually described in a design brief. A design brief describes
the problem that needs to be solved by your design.

The designer has to work within the limits of available components, manufacturing
techniques, materials, costs and time. These are considered the limitations of the
design challenge and form part of the design brief statement.

RESEARCH: Analyze existing designs like various condo floor plans. Use a search
engine such as Google to get ideas. This one is really opened ended on the amount
of ideas you can research, but you should narrow it down to the condo design
constraints.

ANALYZE AND PLAN: Here is where you will want to analyze concepts and explore
your ideas. Some won’t make the cut but this is all about using successes and
failures as part of the decision making process. Once you have settled on an idea
you need to think about what it will look like. This where you will now need to use
online design software to help you create a design. You need to make a copy of
this design and add it to your report. If you do not want to use an online floor
planner software you have the option of creating a floor plan sketch. You will need
to take a picture and add it to your report.

PRODUCE: This is when you will start creating your condo floor plan design using
Google SketchUp. Remember to check and make sure you are following all the
project requirements and constraints.
EVALUATE: Verify that your design did meet all requirements and all steps of the
process are complete. You might decide that your design needs a quick tweak
here. Check that you have met all the rubric criteria here also.

The Dream Suite Report Format

1. Include a title page that has a picture of your final floor plan design

2. Include the DRAPE design process and describe each step in your own words, in
terms of how you used each step to help you complete this dream suite floor plan
project.

3. Include either an image from a floor planner software or a sketch in this report.

4. Provide a final evaluation of this project by answering the questions below:

a) What did you find to be the most difficult part of this project? Why?

b) If you were able to do this project again, what changes would you make if any

to your design?

c) What did you learn by doing this project that you did not know before?

d) What mark do you believe that you deserve on this project on a scale of 1 to 10.

10 being the highest and 1 being the lowest mark.

That’s it, please don’t forget that this report needs to be created on google drive docs
and then shared with me (angelo.cozzi@gapps.yrdsb.ca) when complete.
