DEFINITION OF TERMS

 Context Clue – are hints found within a sentence, paragraph, or


passage that a reader can use to understand the meanings of
new or unfamiliar words.

 Definition Context Clue – The new term may be formally


defined, or sufficient explanation may be given within the
sentence or in the following sentence.

 Exemplification Context Clue –

CONTEXT CLUES

Context clues are hints found within a sentence, paragraph, or passage


that a reader can use to understand the meanings of new or unfamiliar
words.
There are several different types of context clues. One of them is:

1. DEFINITION/DESCRIPTION CLUE
The new term may be formally defined, or sufficient explanation may
be given within the sentence or in the following sentence. Clues to
definition include “that is,” commas, dashes, and parentheses.

Mr. Fry is an affable principal. He is pleasantly easy to


approach and always friendly.

The police thwarted, prevented the robber’s plan.

A marsh, or a swamp, is a wet and muddy place.

The boy was unresponsive when he didn’t answer any of the


questions we asked.

Aphids, pear-shaped sucking insect, appear on garden roses in


May and June.
