depict mechanical parts or connectors.
• Borders
These are the frames which surround the contents on a diagram and include a title block.
Every symbol and border graphic created using Solid Edge Wiring and Harness Design Symbol
is stored in a library. Libraries enable symbols and borders of a specific electrical function to be
grouped in a convenient location ready for use on design diagrams. Symbol libraries are
displayed in a tree structure in other applications.

To aid symbol construction on all symbol diagrams, an insertion point marker and a grid facility
are automatically displayed in the diagram window.

The grid is also an essential facility for determining the scale of your symbol diagrams and
should be configured, as required, prior to creating a new symbol.

Creating a New Symbol

Once a symbol library exists, you can populate it with symbols for use in diagrams in the design
applications. You can configure symbols with various parameters such as type, scale and grid
size and use different tools to create the symbol graphics.
Prerequisites
Before you may create a new symbol, you must:

• Open an existing symbol library (see “Opening an Existing Library” on page 16)
or
• Create a new symbol library (see “Creating a New Library” on page 16)

Creating a New Symbol

into which the new symbol will be saved.

Procedure
1. Once the appropriate symbol library is open in the Symbol Browser Tree, right-click on
the folder under which you want to create the symbol and select the New Symbol menu
option.
2. The New Symbol facility is displayed. You must specify the following for the new
symbol:
• Symbol Name - the name of the symbol.

Note
Symbol names may be of any character length and any combination of numbers,
letters and special characters. If you are creating a splice symbol, you can add
more than one pin to the symbol.

• Symbol Type - whether the symbol is for a normal device, a ground device, a
comment or a splice. See “Overview of Ground Devices” on page 45 for more
information about ground devices.
o A comment symbol is a generic symbol that can be associated with a particular
object when it is added to a diagram. If the associated object is moved, the
comment symbol moves to maintain its orientation to the object. Comment
symbols can be used to add a build note to a diagram.
o You cannot add a pin to a comment symbol but if you add a name text marker,
the name of an associated object is displayed with the symbol in a diagram. See
“Create Name Text Tool” on page 31 for more information about adding a name
text marker.
• Non-resizable
Specifies whether the symbol can (unselected) or cannot (selected) be resized when
placed in a diagram. Mandatory, displayed only when Comment is selected as the
Symbol Type.
• Use Physical Scale
Specifies whether you want to use a physical scale as specified by Grid Size for a
comment symbol when placing it in diagrams. If not selected, a comment symbol
will be scaled based on pin grid points. Mandatory, displayed only when Comment is
selected as the Symbol Type.
• Grid Size
Specifies the physical distance between the visible grid points. A comment symbol
uses this physical scale and retains its physical size when placed in a diagram

3. Click OK to create the new symbol's (blank) diagram window.

4. The new symbol's name will appear listed under its library folder in the Symbol Browser
Tree.
5. The new symbol's name, and the name of the library in which it is contained, is
displayed in the diagram window's title bar - this helps to distinguish between diagram
windows when viewing multiple symbol diagrams in the Symbol Editor.
6. To aid symbol construction on all symbol diagrams, an insertion point marker (see
“Insertion Point Marker” on page 30) and a grid facility are automatically displayed in
the diagram window.
7. The grid is an essential facility for determining the scale of your symbol diagrams and
should be configured, as required, prior to creating a new symbol.
8. In Solid Edge Wiring and Harness Design Symbol, the grid is a drawing aid only and
does not form part of a symbol or diagram. The grid spacing is relative so the distance
between two grids is one grid but there is an absolute measurement of .25 inches
between two grid points.
• When you specify the height of text In Solid Edge Wiring and Harness Design
Symbol, you must specify it as grid units. That is, if you specify 0.5, the text will be
displayed as half the height of a grid space in Solid Edge Wiring and Harness
Design Symbol. It will also be displayed as half the height of a grid space in a design
application, regardless of the pin spacing that is specified for the diagram. This
means that the text size relative to the symbol graphic remains constant in both
applications.
o For example: If an Solid Edge Harness Design diagram has a pin spacing of
4mm and you want the text on a symbol to be displayed with a height of 6mm,
you must specify a text height of 1.5 pin grids in Solid Edge Wiring and Harness
Design Symbol.
9. You may now construct the new symbol's diagram using the following tools:
• Graphic Drawing tools (see “Graphics” on page 77)

Add Pin Tools

Add Pin Tools

Pins applied to a symbol diagram provide points of available connectivity when that symbol is
inserted onto a schematic diagram. These pins can be either external or internal.
Internal pins can be used to represent the internal connectivity of a symbol. However, they
cannot be viewed within the schematic diagram.

In the Edit Properties dialog for a pin, the Attributes section of the General tab lists the
Internal Only attribute. This cannot be edited directly, You must use a specific action to
convert this (see “Converting a Pin Between Internal and External” on page 37).

Generally, pins are applied to a symbol diagram after the appropriate graphical elements have
been applied. See “Graphics” on page 77.

The Add pin tools are located on the ribbon. To access them, press Space Bar and enter Add
External or Add Internal.

As pins are added to a symbol drawing, they are automatically allocated a 'pin number'. Pin
numbers are displayed with the word 'PIN' or 'INT_PIN' and the next available, sequential
number e.g. PIN1, PIN2...

For an internal pin, the Attributes section of the General tab of the Edit Properties dialog
displays the attribute Internal Pin Type that can have the following values: Undefined,
Chassis, Ground or Voltage. These types define the electrical behavior within the schematic.

A symbol block is treated as internal if it contains only internal pins. That means, the block can
be used, but no conductor can terminate at it.

A pin is marked as internal with respect to the symbol within which it is located, not with
respect to the block. That means, if a symbol is used in two composite symbols, any of its pins
can be set to internal in one composite symbol and to external in the other composite symbol.

If you are creating a splice symbol, you can add more than one pin. You can then use this
symbol to create a splice with more than one pin.

Internal Connectivity Links

In a device symbol, you can add internal connectivity links (representing resistances, fuses or
diodes) between internal or external pins. The links set the behavior of the symbol within the
design tools.
This connectivity enables:

• the modeling of terminal junction systems. Within a jumper symbol, the internal
connectivity allows the terminal blocks to conduct as you configure them in the design
tools.
• the definition of virtual wires between pins. These aid simulation but do not form part of
any wiring list.

July 2019

Note - Viewing PDF files within a web browser causes some links not to function. Use HTML for full navigation.
Symbol Drawing
Internal Connectivity Links

A link can terminate at two pins only. If you require more than two pins to be linked, you must
use multiple links. When a pin is moved, a link moves with it.

A dangling link (that is, a link with an unterminated end) can occur when:

• the copy/paste action is used without a terminating pin selected

• when a terminating pin is deleted
If you export a symbol with internal links as a DXF (drawing exchange format) file, the links
are exported as unintelligent polylines. That means, if the DXF file is re-imported into
Solid Edge Wiring and Harness Design, the internal connectivity is lost.

Attributes for Internal Links

For all internal link types, the Attributes section of the General tab of the Edit Properties
dialog displays a Link Type attribute. You cannot edit this directly. To change this, you must
use a convert action (see “Converting an Internal Link to a Different Type (Resistance, Fuse or
Diode)” on page 42).

Otherwise, the listed attributes depend on the link type:

• DC Res - resistance value. Displayed for all link types.

• I Max - maximum current. Displayed for a fuse link only.
Internal Connectivity in Design Tools
Internal links and pins are not visible when a symbol is added to a diagram. If a symbol block
contains only internal pins, the block graphics are displayed without the internal connectivity
graphics.

It is not possible to terminate a conductor at an internal pin. The Update Symbol action will
disconnect any wires where a pin has changed to internal.

If an internal link terminates at external pins, you can terminate conductors at those external
pins. Terminating a live wire at one of those pins will result in a voltage on the other pin
(depending on the internal link type).

When designs are compared, the system can highlight connectivity differences for any symbol
for which the internal connectivity has changed.

Internal links are not listed in a connection list report.

Internal Connectivity in Library Tool

The component library tool will list only the external pins on the symbol.

Internal Connectivity in the Analysis Tools

The analysis tools can generate models from symbol internal connectivity. For example,
drawing a zero resistance link inside a symbol would cause the voltage existing on one of the
pins to be applied to the other pin. Dangling links would be excluded from model generation.

If a symbol has an associated analysis model, any internal connectivity is ignored (but is
preserved).

Composite symbols, that contain blocks consisting of symbols with associated models (or
internal connectivity), can use links to connect the internal blocks, resulting in the generation of
a working analysis model for the composite symbol.

Example Flow for Creating a Composite Symbol with Internal Connectivity

1. Create a symbol for a battery and attach an analysis model or use pins of type ground
and voltage.

2. Create a symbol for a fuse and attach an analysis model or use an internal link of type
fuse.

3. Create a composite symbol containing the battery and fuse.

4. Convert the pins on the battery and fuse symbol blocks to internal pins. See “Converting
a Pin Between Internal and External” on page 37.

Adding a Resistance, Fuse or Diode Link to the Internal Connectivity of a Symbol

When added to a diagram, the symbol will look like this:

o The pins A, B, NEG and POS are not visible.

o You cannot connect a conductor directly to the battery or the fuse.
o You could place the battery or fuse symbol block separately in the diagram but you
would not be able to connect conductors to it. It is like placing a symbol with no pins
because both pins are internal.
o You can perform analysis operations on this symbol. The simulation workbench is
able to view the electrical properties of all hierarchical objects.
o The attributes of each block are annotated with the block name. For example,
Single-cell1:DC Res and Fuse1: DC Res. This is used with the design tools for
analysis purposes.
o If you create composite symbols using blocks that have analysis inputs, these inputs
are exposed to the composite symbol during simulation. However, the failure modes
of these blocks are not exposed to the composite symbol.

Overview of Ground Devices

You can use ground devices in Solid Edge Wiring and Harness Design Design designs. You
must, however, create a symbol for the ground device before adding it to a Solid Edge Wiring
and Harness Design Design design.
Ground devices can have analysis models and footprints, and can have connectors mated to
them in Solid Edge Wiring and Harness Design Design. A ground device can have any number
of pins.

A typical workflow for using ground devices is as follows:

1. Create a ground symbol in Solid Edge Wiring and Harness Design Symbol. See
“Creating a New Symbol” on page 27 topic.
2. Add the ground device to a design in Solid Edge Wiring and Harness Design Design.
You can create a ground device in Solid Edge Wiring and Harness Design Design only
by adding a device with a ground symbol. You cannot convert an existing device in a
design to a ground device nor can you convert a ground device to a normal device.

Chapter 4
Adding Datums

Comment symbols support the placement of multiple types of datum - context-specific

positional placeholders that can be used in Harness styling as anchors for object decorations.
Restriction
Functional use of Datums in Solid Edge Wiring and Harness Design is currently restricted
to splice datums only.

For example:

• Using related entity decoration (RED) datums, connector end views can be styled to
display wire names within the cavities of a connector symbol.
• Using engineering datums, connector plan views can be placed at different positions
based on the datum specified for the component (Front, Back or Tip of the Terminal).

Note
Datums cannot be grouped like other objects. If a number of graphic objects have
been selected, and one of them is a datum, the option to group the objects is disabled.

Adding Datums
RED Datums

RED Datums
Related entity decoration (RED) datums have to be unique within a symbol, and are named
using a type-specific prefix and an incrementing number. However, the order in which datums
are used in Harness can be configured independently of the naming convention used.
The following topics detail the types of RED datum available, and how they can be added,
edited and deleted from a symbol:

Adding an Attribute Datum

You can add an Attribute datum to a related entity (RED) datum that is associated with a parent
RED datum already placed on the symbol diagram, allowing the relationship between the
datums to be exploited when styling hierarchical related entities in a diagram. For example,
where the geometry of fuse box might be irregular, and the decorations defined in styling for
additional components would not be sufficient.
Procedure
1. With the symbol open, either:
• Click on the datum for which you are creating an attribute datum, then either:
o Press Space Bar and enter Add Attribute Datum, the Attribute Datum Dialog is

Adding a Constraining Box

You can add a rectangular outline within a symbol, which can be used when styling repeated
patterns of related entity decoration sets. Once the last-placed decoration set extends beyond
this constraining outline, the placement of a new symbol instance will be triggered to contain
subsequent sets.
Note
A comment symbol can contain only one constraining box; once a box has been placed, the
menu option is disabled.

Procedure
1. With the symbol open, press Space Bar and enter Constraining Box. The cursor changes
to .

2. Position the cursor where you want to place the top-left corner of the box, then click to
place. Move the cursor to where you want to place the bottom-right corner, then click to
place again.
Results
The box is placed onto the canvas and is added to the Constraining Box sub-folder of the
Datum folder for the open symbol in the diagram browser.
You can toggle the display of constraining box boundaries by pressing Space Bar and entering

Reordering RED Datums

You can define a selection order for a set of related entity decoration (RED) datums of the same
type, overriding the default order imposed based on the datums’ names. When styling related
entities, the list of entities are placed at the appropriate datums based on the order specified
here.
Note
Reordering applied to top-level datums (with no associated datums) affects all datums of
that type within the symbol. Reordering applied to a set of associated datums applies only
within that set.

Procedure
1. Either:
• Click on a datum of the type to be reordered, then right-click

• In the diagram browser, navigate to the Datum folder of the open symbol, then to
the sub-folder of the datum type to be ordered, then right-click on the datum.
2. Select Reorder Datum Type Datums from the menu.

Note
The menu options available vary according to the datum type selected when the
right-click menu is accessed, and the presence of any datums associated with the
selected datum. For example, right-clicking on a design connector datum with
associated connector cavity datums results in the options Reorder Connector Datums
and Reorder Cavity Datums being offered (in this case, choosing the second option
results in the reordering of only those connector cavity datums associated with the
selected design connector datums. Also, drilling down through the hierarchy of
associated datums in the diagram browser before right-clicking restricts the menu
options offered to only the selected level and lower.

3. The Reorder Datum dialog is displayed. The main field lists all datums of the selected
type (within the associated set, if applicable) in the order in which they are selected for
use in Solid Edge Harness Design, from top to bottom. To move a datum within the
order, first click to select it, then click one of the following buttons:

• - Moves the datum to the top of the list

• - Moves the datum one position higher in the list

• - Moves the datum one position lower in the list

• - Moves the datum to the bottom of the list

Engineering Datums

Engineering Datums
Engineering datums are used when styling connector and/or splice symbols in
Solid Edge Harness Design, selectively positioning primary component symbols based on the
datum selected for the component as it is placed onto a design.
The following engineering datums can be selected for a component:

• Back
Wire lengths are measured to the point at which they enter the connector cavity.
• Front
Wire lengths are measured to the front face of the connector in which they terminate.
• Tip. Term
Wire lengths are measured to the tip of the terminal selected for them during Cavity
Component Management.
See the Solid Edge Harness User Guide for more information.

Once engineering datums have been added to a symbol, they can be used as the nominal origin
for symbol placement when styling the position of connector/splice symbols.

The symbol datum - and, hence, the position of the symbol - is selected based on the
engineering datum specified for the component.

Note
Only one engineering datum of each type can be added to a comment symbol.

Adding Information Placeholders to a Border

You can use the General tab of the Edit Properties facility in Solid Edge Wiring and Harness
Design Symbol to add placeholders for information to a border. You can add placeholders for
specific project, design or diagram information. When the border is added to diagram, the
placeholder is then replaced with the appropriate information.
To do this, you must specify a property for the border. The property value must contain the
placeholder string in braces { }. The placeholder strings that you can use are restricted to the
following types of information:

Adding Information Placeholders to a Border

For example:

You can add a property with the name Diagram_Count and the value:

{diagram.index} of {design.diagramcount}

In Solid Edge Wiring and Harness Design Symbol, the string {diagram.index} of
{design.diagramcount} is displayed on the border.

If you add the border to the second diagram of a design with 5 diagrams, the following text is
displayed on the border:

2 of 5

When the border is added to a diagram, the values of any properties that use placeholder strings
are not editable.

Note
You cannot use the strings design.revision and design.releaselevel in Solid Edge Wiring
and Harness Design. These are reserved for use within the Capital suite framework.
Therefore, you should use alternative property names in Solid Edge Wiring and Harness
Design to avoid conflict.

Procedure
1. Right-click on the border in Solid Edge Wiring and Harness Design Symbol and select
Properties from the pop-up menu. Alternatively, click on the border, press Space Bar
and enter Properties.
2. The Edit Properties dialog is displayed. Click the General tab and click the New
button below the Properties section.
3. The New Property dialog box is displayed. In the Property Name box, either select a
property name from the drop-down list or enter the name of a new property and click the
OK button.
4. The property is added to the properties box. In the property's row, click the following
columns to change their values:
• Name - the name of the property. This box cannot be edited.
• Value - the value of the property. This is the value that is displayed on the border in
Solid Edge Wiring and Harness Design Symbol. In design applications, any
placeholder values are replaced with the appropriate information.
• Type - the type of value that the property can have. The following options are
available:
o String - a mixture of letters, numbers and special symbols.

o Shrink to fit
If selected, specifies that the font of the text reduces as necessary so that the text
fits in its bounding box.
o Overflow
If selected, specifies that the text ignores the edge of its bounding box and flows
out of it.
o Wrap text
Specifies whether the text wraps onto multiple lines when it reaches the edge of
the text bounding box (selected) or whether the text ignores the bounding box
and continues on one line (unselected). When this is selected, if a word is too
long to fit on a single line, it is wrapped by character. Mandatory.
o Rotation - rotates the text to change the angle at which it is displayed. By default
this is 0 which displays the text running left to right following the horizontal
axis: . Enter a different value manually or select a value from the dropdown

list, for example, 270 .

o Auto flip - if selected, the text flips automatically so that it is never displayed
upside down when it is rotated or flipped. If not selected, a flip or rotation can
result in the text being displayed upside down.
o Color - the color of the text. To change the default color, select Over-ride from
the drop-down list on the left. This enables the box on the right that you can click
to display the Choose Text Color facility.

automatically in any diagrams where the border has been used. You must remove the
border from the diagram and add it again.

Adding Zone Areas to a Border

If you are going to add a border to a diagram in which cross-references on objects are used, you
can divide the space within the border into zone areas. These zone areas are used in the cross-
references to describe the position of objects in diagrams.
Procedure
1. Open the border, press Space Bar and enter Modify Zone Area.
2. Check the Use Zone Area box and specify the following:
• Rows/Columns
The number of rows and columns that divide the space in the border into zone areas.
• Text Height
Specify the height of the text that labels the rows and columns in the border. Select
the unit of measurement from the drop-down list.
• Excluded Characters
Enter any alphabetical characters that you wish to be excluded from use in defining
zone areas. This could be to conform to IEC Standards for diagrams or to avoid
ambiguity in border references using similar characters such as “0” and “O” or “1”
and “I”. An error message is displayed if non-alphabetical characters are specified.

Field Description
Show Grid Specifies whether grid points are displayed on the diagram. Even
if you uncheck this box so that the grid points are not displayed,
they still exist and objects with pins snap to them. Optional.
Major Grid Interval Specifies at which interval larger grid points are displayed. For
example, a value of 5 would display a larger grid point for every
5th grid point. Mandatory.
Maximum Drawn Points Specifies the maximum number of grid points that can be
displayed in any one row or column when you zoom out of the
diagram. When the specified number of grid points is exceeded,
the grid is no longer displayed. Mandatory.
Drawing Grid Specifies how many invisible grid points are between the visible
grid points. You specify this as a percentage of the print scale. For
example, if you specify 50, there is one invisible drawing grid
point halfway between each visible grid point. Drawing objects
without pins snap to these invisible grid points. Optional.
Non-resizable Specifies that the symbol cannot be resized when placed in a
diagram. Mandatory, displayed only when editing a comment
symbol.
Use Physical Scale Specifies whether you want to use a physical scale as specified by
Grid Size for a comment symbol when placing it in diagrams. If
not selected, a comment symbol will be scaled based on pin grid
points. Mandatory, displayed only when editing a comment
symbol.
Grid Size Specifies the physical distance between the visible grid points. A
comment symbol uses this physical scale and retains its physical
size when placed in a diagram regardless of the diagram’s pin grid
settings. Displayed only when editing a comment symbol,
disabled if Use Physical Scale is not selected.
Note: The co-ordinates displayed at the bottom right of the
