• Electrical
Providing a graphical depiction of a device, backshell, ground or splice, and will have
electrical pins.
• Comment
These are 2D illustrations and are most commonly used with the Harness application to
depict mechanical parts or connectors.
• Borders
These are the frames which surround the contents on a diagram and include a title block.
Every symbol and border graphic created using Solid Edge Wiring and Harness Design Symbol
is stored in a library. Libraries enable symbols and borders of a specific electrical function to be
grouped in a convenient location ready for use on design diagrams. Symbol libraries are
displayed in a tree structure in other applications.
To aid symbol construction on all symbol diagrams, an insertion point marker and a grid facility
are automatically displayed in the diagram window.
The grid is also an essential facility for determining the scale of your symbol diagrams and
should be configured, as required, prior to creating a new symbol.

Chapter 2
Libraries
Symbol and border libraries are used to place commonly-used objects and borders in a diagram;
a symbol library contains one or more defined symbols and a border library contains one or
more defined borders. Once libraries are defined in the Solid Edge Wiring and Harness Design
Symbol tool, they can be used in design diagrams; loading a library gives access to all the
symbols or borders in the library.

Creating a New Symbol
Procedure
1. Once the appropriate symbol library is open in the Symbol Browser Tree, right-click on
the folder under which you want to create the symbol and select the New Symbol menu
option.
2. The New Symbol facility is displayed. You must specify the following for the new
symbol:
• Symbol Name - the name of the symbol.
Note
Symbol names may be of any character length and any combination of numbers,
letters and special characters. If you are creating a splice symbol, you can add
more than one pin to the symbol.
• Symbol Type - whether the symbol is for a normal device, a ground device, a
comment or a splice. See “Overview of Ground Devices” on page 45 for more
information about ground devices.
o A comment symbol is a generic symbol that can be associated with a particular
object when it is added to a diagram. If the associated object is moved, the
comment symbol moves to maintain its orientation to the object. Comment
symbols can be used to add a build note to a diagram.
o You cannot add a pin to a comment symbol but if you add a name text marker,
the name of an associated object is displayed with the symbol in a diagram. See
“Create Name Text Tool” on page 31 for more information about adding a name
text marker.
• Non-resizable
Specifies whether the symbol can (unselected) or cannot (selected) be resized when
placed in a diagram. Mandatory, displayed only when Comment is selected as the
Symbol Type.
• Use Physical Scale
Specifies whether you want to use a physical scale as specified by Grid Size for a
comment symbol when placing it in diagrams. If not selected, a comment symbol
will be scaled based on pin grid points. Mandatory, displayed only when Comment is
selected as the Symbol Type.
• Grid Size
Specifies the physical distance between the visible grid points. A comment symbol
uses this physical scale and retains its physical size when placed in a diagram

Add Pin Tools
In the Edit Properties dialog for a pin, the Attributes section of the General tab lists the
Internal Only attribute. This cannot be edited directly, You must use a specific action to
convert this (see “Converting a Pin Between Internal and External” on page 37).
Generally, pins are applied to a symbol diagram after the appropriate graphical elements have
been applied. See “Graphics” on page 77.
The Add pin tools are located on the ribbon. To access them, press Space Bar and enter Add
External or Add Internal.
As pins are added to a symbol drawing, they are automatically allocated a 'pin number'. Pin
numbers are displayed with the word 'PIN' or 'INT_PIN' and the next available, sequential
number e.g. PIN1, PIN2...
For an internal pin, the Attributes section of the General tab of the Edit Properties dialog
displays the attribute Internal Pin Type that can have the following values: Undefined,
Chassis, Ground or Voltage. These types define the electrical behavior within the schematic.
A symbol block is treated as internal if it contains only internal pins. That means, the block can
be used, but no conductor can terminate at it.
A pin is marked as internal with respect to the symbol within which it is located, not with
respect to the block. That means, if a symbol is used in two composite symbols, any of its pins
can be set to internal in one composite symbol and to external in the other composite symbol.
If you are creating a splice symbol, you can add more than one pin. You can then use this
symbol to create a splice with more than one pin.

Internal Connectivity Links
A link can terminate at two pins only. If you require more than two pins to be linked, you must
use multiple links. When a pin is moved, a link moves with it.
A dangling link (that is, a link with an unterminated end) can occur when:
It is not possible to terminate a conductor at an internal pin. The Update Symbol action will
disconnect any wires where a pin has changed to internal.
If an internal link terminates at external pins, you can terminate conductors at those external
pins. Terminating a live wire at one of those pins will result in a voltage on the other pin
(depending on the internal link type).
When designs are compared, the system can highlight connectivity differences for any symbol
for which the internal connectivity has changed.

Internal Connectivity Links
If a symbol has an associated analysis model, any internal connectivity is ignored (but is
preserved).
Composite symbols, that contain blocks consisting of symbols with associated models (or
internal connectivity), can use links to connect the internal blocks, resulting in the generation of
a working analysis model for the composite symbol.
2. Create a symbol for a fuse and attach an analysis model or use an internal link of type
fuse.

RED Datums
Related entity decoration (RED) datums have to be unique within a symbol, and are named
using a type-specific prefix and an incrementing number. However, the order in which datums
are used in Harness can be configured independently of the naming convention used.
The following topics detail the types of RED datum available, and how they can be added,
edited and deleted from a symbol:

Adding Datums
Engineering Datums
Engineering Datums
Engineering datums are used when styling connector and/or splice symbols in
Solid Edge Harness Design, selectively positioning primary component symbols based on the
datum selected for the component as it is placed onto a design.
The following engineering datums can be selected for a component:
• Back
Wire lengths are measured to the point at which they enter the connector cavity.
• Front
Wire lengths are measured to the front face of the connector in which they terminate.
• Tip. Term
Wire lengths are measured to the tip of the terminal selected for them during Cavity
Component Management.
See the Solid Edge Harness User Guide for more information.
Once engineering datums have been added to a symbol, they can be used as the nominal origin
for symbol placement when styling the position of connector/splice symbols.
The symbol datum - and, hence, the position of the symbol - is selected based on the
engineering datum specified for the component.
Note
Only one engineering datum of each type can be added to a comment symbol.

Composite Symbols
A composite symbol is a symbol that consists of other symbols. The individual symbols used to
create the composite symbol are called symbol blocks.
If you are using cross-references, the cross-references displayed for each symbol block are
limited to other instances of that block.
Note
If a block is modified, you can update it in the composite symbol. See “Updating a
Symbol Block in a Composite Symbol” on page 64 for more information.
Note - Viewing PDF files within a web browser causes some links not to function. Use HTML for full navigation.

Creating a Border
You can create a border in Solid Edge Wiring and Harness Design Symbol to add to design
diagrams.
Procedure
1. Open or create the border library in which you want to create a border. Right-click on
the name of the border library in the symbol browser tree and choose New Border .
The New Border Dialog Box displays.
2. Specify the name, paper size, and whether you want to create graphics.
3. Click the OK button.
Results
The border is displayed in the diagram window.
• The co-ordinates of the center of a border are always 0,0. This is also the case in a design
application when you add a border to a diagram. The inner line represents the boundary
of the drawing area (that lies within the specified margins) and you can switch between
hiding and displaying this by selecting the Show Boundaries action from the ribbon. The
outer line represents the paper size and will not be visible in the design.

Adding Information Placeholders to a Border
For example:
You can add a property with the name Diagram_Count and the value:
{diagram.index} of {design.diagramcount}
In Solid Edge Wiring and Harness Design Symbol, the string {diagram.index} of
{design.diagramcount} is displayed on the border.
If you add the border to the second diagram of a design with 5 diagrams, the following text is
displayed on the border:
2 of 5
When the border is added to a diagram, the values of any properties that use placeholder strings
are not editable.
Note
You cannot use the strings design.revision and design.releaselevel in Solid Edge Wiring
and Harness Design. These are reserved for use within the Capital suite framework.
Therefore, you should use alternative property names in Solid Edge Wiring and Harness
Design to avoid conflict.
Procedure
1. Right-click on the border in Solid Edge Wiring and Harness Design Symbol and select
Properties from the pop-up menu. Alternatively, click on the border, press Space Bar
and enter Properties.
2. The Edit Properties dialog is displayed. Click the General tab and click the New
button below the Properties section.
3. The New Property dialog box is displayed. In the Property Name box, either select a
property name from the drop-down list or enter the name of a new property and click the
OK button.
4. The property is added to the properties box. In the property's row, click the following
columns to change their values:
• Name - the name of the property. This box cannot be edited.
• Value - the value of the property. This is the value that is displayed on the border in
Solid Edge Wiring and Harness Design Symbol. In design applications, any
placeholder values are replaced with the appropriate information.
• Type - the type of value that the property can have. The following options are
available:
o String - a mixture of letters, numbers and special symbols.

There are various ways you can move single or multiple objects within a diagram.
Procedure
1. Select one or more objects.
2. Either:
• Drag the objects using the mouse
• Hold Shift and use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move the objects by:
o One pin grid point if one or more selected objects have pins
o One Drawing Grid point if no selected objects have pins
• Hold Ctrl and use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move the objects by:
o One Major Grid Interval if one or more selected objects have pins
