8. Two blocks of mass 3 kg and 6 kg respectively are placed on a smooth
horizontal surface. They are connected by a light spring of force constant
k = 200 N/m. Initially the spring is unstretched. The indicated velocities
are imparted to the blocks simultaneously. During the subsequent
motion,

becomes zero.
b) Find the maximum extension in the string during the motion of
the blocks.

9. An explosive of mass 6 kg is projected with velocity 50m/s at an angle of 53 o with the horizontal; at the top
of its flight it explodes breaking into two parts, one of which has twice the mass of the other. The two
fragments lands simultaneously. The lighter fragment lands back at the launch point.
(i) What is the velocity of each mass just after explosion?
(ii) Where does the other fragment land?
(iii) What is the energy of the explosion?

10. Prove that when a ball collides with a stationary smooth surface,
then the angle of incidence (θ), angle of rebound (φ) and
coefficient of restitution (e) are related by the formula
tanθ

tanφ

Also subsequently prove that angle of incidence is equal to angle of

rebound in case of elastic collisions.

11. (a) Bomb travelling in air suddenly explodes into fragments. Explain why center of mass of the
fragments will continue to move in the parabolic trajectory of the unexploded bomb.
(b) Explain why a soldier gets a backward jerk when he fires a shot from a rifle.

12. a) State the law of conservation of linear momentum of a

system of particles.
b) A block of mass ‘m’ is released from top of a smooth
wedge as shown in the figure. At time of releasing,
both block as well as wedge were at rest. Find the
speed of the wedge when the ball reaches the bottom.
Given h = 3 m. m = 4 kg and M = 6 kg. Take g = 10
m/s2.

13. A small block slides with velocity V o =0 .5 √ gr on the
horizontal frictionless surface from A to B as shown in the
figure. The block then starts sliding down the smooth circular
track and leaves the contact with the surface at point C.
Calculate the angle θ .

14. A small bob is tied to one end of a light string. Other end of the string is tied to a nail protruding from a
vertical wall. In equilibrium, string remains vertical and gravitational force on bob is balanced by tension
force from the string. Bob and string are free to move in vertical plane.
(a) Prove that the minimum tangential velocity that should be given to the bob at lowest point so that
it is able to complete the vertical circular motion is given by √ 5 g L where ‘L’ is the length of the
string.
(b) Bob is given tangential velocity V o when it is at lowest point. It is found that the string becomes
slack when bob has covered an angular displacement of 143o from the lowest point. Find the value
of V o in terms of g and L.
