MGT1210: FUNDAMENTALS OF BUSINESS MANAGEMENT
ASSIGNMENT: JANUARY 2016 SESSION

Instructions to Students

1. This assignment carries 15% weightage toward the final grade.

2. The assignment should be produced in proportion to the allocation of marks to each sub-
part.

3. Your assignment should be printed on A4 size paper using Times New Roman Font (Font
Size 12), 1.5 line spacing and alignment justified.

4. The assignment should be organized as follows:

a. Front cover and declaration page.

b. Table of contents.

c. Marking guide for assignment, presentation and video rubric. Note: No marks
shall be allocated to completed assignment which is handed without both
marking guide.

d. Introduction.

e. Main body of the assignment.

f. References.

g. Appendix (if any).

5. This is a group assignment (group members shall be 3 – 4 persons only in a group) and
subject to the evaluation below:

a. Group assignment report 70%.

b. Total of 20% for individual presentation.

c. Total of 10% for peer observation. Note: Students must hand it personally to the
lecturer concern (that is private and confidential, hence no passing around).

Note: Total 100 marks converted to 15%.

6. Total pages must not exceed 15 pages (excluding front cover, acknowledgement, table of
content and attachments or appendices).

7. Complete your assignment and hand it in on: 07 March 2016, latest by 5pm.

Note: Late submission will be deducted 5 marks per day from the group report.

Choose an organisation (preferable an international organisation) and interview the manager and
assess his/her leadership and motivation towards the subordinates. Also, find out about how
he/she organises work in his department.

(Note: There shall not be similarity of organisation chosen among groups)

The research shall include the following components:

1. Elaborations on the background and the nature of the business of the organisation.

2. Explain on his/her leadership style and how he/she motivates the subordinates.

3. Relate the above (Question 2) with the leadership and motivation theories that you have
studied and provide your analysis and judgements on the application on those theories.

4. Gather information and illustrate the department’s organisational chart. Analyse and
explain in detailed how the manager organises work within his/her department (ie the
type of organisational design, the span of control that is used, work specialisation, chain
of command etc).

5. Based on your understanding, discuss the pros and cons of the department’s current
organisational structure.

6. Assuming you was hired as a consultant. Create a new organisational structure for that
department and provide your justifications for making those changes.
