Characteristics of Switchgear
Explanations of the new terms as defined in IEC 947-1 / EN 60947-1
Terms Definition
Rated control supply voltage Vs The voltage which is applied to the input terminals of the control circuit of a switching
(IEC 947-1; 4.5.1) device.
Rated operational voltage ve The voltage to which the characteristic values of a switching device are referred. In no
(IEC 947-1; 4.3.1.1) case shall the maximum rated operational voltage exceed the rated insulation
voltage.
Rated insulation voltage Vi The voltage to which dielectric tests and creepage distance are referred. In no case
(IEC 947-1; 4.3.1.2) shall the maximum rated operational voltage exceed the rated insulation
voltage.
Rated impulse withstand voltage Vimp Indicates the resistance of the clearances inside a switching device to impulse voltages.
(IEC 947-1; 4.3.1.3) By using appropriate switchgear it can be ensured that no overvoltage from the supply
voltage in which the devices are employed can be transferred to parts which have been
switched off.
Rated operational current Ie The current which a switching device can carry taking into account the rated operational
(IEC 947-1; 4.3.2.3) voltage, the rated duty, the utilization category and the ambient temperature.
Convertional free air thermal current Ith The maximum current a switching device can carry over a duty cycle of at least 8 hours
(IEC 947-1; 4.3.2.1) without the temperature rise exceeding specified levels. It normally corresponds to the
maximum rated operational current.
Rated uninterrupted current IU The current a switching device can carry without interruption (for periods of weeks) (IEC
947-1; 4.3.2.4) months, or years).
Rated conditional short-circuit current Iq The short-circuit current which a switching device (e.g. contactor) protected by a short-
(IEC 947-1; 4.3.6.4) circuit protective device (e.g., manual motor starter) can carry during the breaking time of
the protective device.
Rated short-time withstand current ICW Of a switching device is its capability to carry the short-time current during a specified
(IEC 947-1;4.3.6.1) time without impairment (e.g., by excessive rise of temperature).
Rated breaking capacity Indicates the current which a switching device can break in accordance with its utilization
(IEC 947-1; 4.3.5.3) category. The rated breaking capacity is stated by reference to the rated operational
voltage and rated operational current.
Rated making capacity The current stated by the manufacturer which the switching device can make in
(IEC 947-1; 4.3.5.2) accordance with its utilization category. The rated making capacity is stated by reference
to the rated operational voltage and rated operational current.
Utilization category The utilization category of a switching device determines its intended application and
(IEC 947-1; 4.4) gives information on its suitability regarding making and breaking and short-circuit
capacities, e.g., AC 3: Starting, switching off three-phase AC motors during running.
Rated frequency The frequency for which a switching device is designed and to which the other
(IEC 947-1; 4.3.3) characteristics are referred.
Protection against contact - Covers all design features to prevent direct contact (without the use of a tool) with live
direct contact system parts (finger proof, back-of-hand proof).
(IEC 536)
Fingerproof A switching device is considered to be finger proof if its live parts cannot be touched
(IEC 536) when actuating the operating elements. This also applies when neighboring switching
devices are operated. The fingerproof area of a push-actuated mechanism is a circular
area having a radius of 30 mm min. around the operating element at right angles related
to the direction of operation. Within this area, all hazardous parts should be located at
least 80 mm below the operating level.
Back-of-hand proof A switching device is considered to be back-of-hand proof it its live parts cannot be
(IEC 536) touched by a ball having a diameter of 50 mm.
Creepage distance The shortest distance along the surface of an insulating material between two conducting
(IEC 947-1; 2.5.51 / IEV 151-03-37) parts. It is determined by the rated insulation voltage, pollution degree and creep
resistance of the material.
Clearance The distance between two conducting parts along a string stretched the shortest way
(IEC 947-1; 2.5.46 / IEV 441-17-31) between these conducting parts. It is determined by the rated impulse voltage, over-
voltage category and the pollution degree.

Characteristics of Switchgear
Explanations of the new terms as defined in IEC 947-1 / EN 60947-1
Terms Definition
Opening delay The time between operating and first opening of a contact.
Closing delay The time between operating and first closing of a contact.
Safe isolation Reinforced or double insulation which reliably prevents voltage transfer from one circuit to
(VDE 0106 Teil 101; 2) another. Safe isolation is of particular significance between main and auxiliary circuits of switchgear.
Separating function A switching device whose switch contacts, when in the open position, achieve the prescribed
(IEC 947-1; 2.1.19) opening gap (separating gap) which is required to separate circuits. The entire system or part of it
can thus be disconnected from power supply for safety reasons.
Shock resistance The property of a switching device to withstand pulse-like motion without changing the operating
state and remain undamaged. Contacts shall not lift off while the switching devices are in the ON
position; the main contacts shall not strike together in the OFF position.
Overvoltage category In accordance with overvoltages (e.g. by lightning or during switching on/off) which might occur
(IEC 947-1; 2.5.60) at the location where switchgear is installed, the following overvoltage categories have been
(IEC 664) established.
(VDE 0109 part 1, preliminary) Overvoltage category IV:
Applies to the use directly at the connecting point of the installation (direct lightning influence may
occur) e.g., on an overhead cable connection.
Overvoltage category III: (applies to switchgear for industrial use)
Equipment for connection in stationary installations which are protected by overvoltage suppressing
equipment, e.g., switches employed in low voltage distribution plants or controls for industrial use.
Overvoltage category II:
Power consumption equipment for connection to stationary installations, e.g. household appliances,
power-driven tools.
Overvoltage category I:
Equipment for connection to circuits using overvoltage protective equipment, e.g., electronic
equipment.
Ambient temperature, open The temperature of the room in which a switching device is installed.
(IEC 947-1; 2.1.9 / IEV 441-11-13)
Ambient temperature, enclosed The temperature at which an enclosed switching device can be operated, taking into account that
(IEC 947-1; 2.1.9 / IEV 441-11-13) power consumption of the switching device will cause additional rise of temperature inside the
enclosure.
Pollution degree Indicates the expected amount of conductive dust and humidity which might reduce the electric
(IEC 947-1; 6.1.3.2) strength of a switching device. The degrees of pollution are characterized as follows:
Pollution degree 1:
None or only dry nonconducting pollution, not having any influence.
Pollution degree 2:
Normally nonconducting pollution only. Temporary conductivity due to condensation, however, is
to be expected.
Pollution degree 3: (switchgear for industrial use)
Conducting pollution or dry non-conducting pollution which turns conductive by condensing.
Pollution degree 4:
Pollution will lead to continuous conductivity, e.g., caused by conducting dust, rain, or snow.
Power consumption The energy inside equipment, e.g., by contact resistance of current paths, operating coils,
power supplies, or similar, which is converted to heat.
Coordination type Describes the condition of a switchgear assembly (motor starter) during and after the test carried
(IEC 947-4-1; 8.3.4.2.3) out with the rated conditional short-circuit current:
Type "1" coordination:
- No danger to persons and systems.
- No immediate readiness for service required.
- Damage to starter is acceptable.
Type "2" coordination:
- No danger to persons and systems.
- Starter is suitable for further service.
- No damage to starter except slightly welded switch contacts after these have easily been
separated without significant deformation.
Positively driven operation The auxiliary contacts of a switching device are always in the same (open or closed) switch
(IEC 947-1; 2.4.11 / IEV 441-16-12) position as the supply voltage contacts.

The motor rated currents are valid for normal internal and surface cooled-down three-phase current motors of 1500 r. p. m.
Direct-on-line-starting: Starting current max. 6 x motor rated current. Starting time: max. 5 sec.
Y/∆-current: Starting current max. 2 x motor rated current. Starting time max. 15 s. Thermal overload relay in the delta circuit to be set at 0.58 x motor rated current.
The rated currents of the fuse at Y/∆ -starting are also applicable for asynchronous slip-ring motors. At higher motor rated currents, starting currents, and/or longer starting times a
higher-rated fuse has to be applied. This table is also applicable for "gL" fuses (DIN VDE 0636).
Using NH-fuses in aM-characteristics fuse rating = motor rated current has to be selected.

Notes
The values given in the above tables are values for AC- and DC-operated contactors (economy circuit coils).
Because of the switching behavior and the moved masses, no DL 4 K-DC...DL 5 K-DC contactors should be used in "DC" systems.
DL 7 K-DC, DL 11 K-DC, DL 15 K-DC and DL 18 K-DC can be used as these contacts withstand electrical welding.
Order reference : see contactors. When ordering, add voltage code number to order reference.

Notes
Protection against accidental contacts acc. to IEC 536, DIN VDE 0106 Part 100
Design of electrical equipment and its arrangement in electrical installations with a rated operational voltage of up to 1000 V ~ and 1500 V ~ in respect to protection
against direct contact, when operating elements (pushbuttons, toggle switches etc.) are close to hazardous parts.
Contact protection "fingerproof" only refers to the operating element in the direction of operation. In this case, a distance from the operating element to hazardous
parts in the radius of r = 30 mm from the central point has to be assured.
The degree of protection IP 20 is more than contact protection "fingerproof." A protection against contacts with electrical equipment from all directions is included.
On request, an extended protection against contact can be achieved for products with contact protection "fingerproof" and degree of protection IP 00, by using
covers.

Wiring
There are two ways to wire the M 06 thermal overload relay in the control
cirucit
Description:
Description: Internal wiring is not required when building up a control in the normal
Terminal 95 and terminal 96 are internally wired and connected to the pins on configuration. N/C contact 95/96 can be connected to coil termination A1.
the right hand side of the relay. The pins go to terminals 14 (22) and A2 on the When doing this, remove the two connecting pins using side cutting
contactor. pliers. This applies also where voltages applied to contactor and thermal
overload relay are different.
N/C contact 95/96 is connected in series with coil termination A2.
Lift off transparent cover. The desired reset mode can now be set on a
2 position switch:
Lift off transparent cover. Settings are now accessible. - left hand position: ("H") = hand reset
Set desired value using potentiometer with ampere dial plate. - right hand position: ("A") = automatic reset
Setting can be locked by sealing the cover. The cover, when closed, will lock the selector in position.
To reset the overload relay by hand, press the blue RESET/STOP
button.
The test function is carried out by pressing the red TEST button with the
2 position switch in the "H" position.
Pressing this button will simulate tripping of the overload relay:
Press blue RESET/STOP pushbutton to stop the relay. - both N/C and N/O auxiliary contacts will operate
Pressing this button will only operate the N/C contact. The N/O button - the mechanical indicator will appear
will remain unaffected. The cover, when closed, will lock the TEST function.
To reset the overload relay, operate the blue RESET/STOP button.

General information
for thermal overload relays
General
Contactors and contactor assemblies can be supplied
with thermal overload relays for the protection of
motors against excessive high currents. When ordering,
care must be taken to ensure that the correct relay
current range is selected in conformity with the rated
motor current. The overload relays are designed for
a switching frequency of 15 to 30 ops/hr. Higher
switching frequencies heat up the bi-metal strips,
thereby causing premature tripping.
Technical details
Trip class of the thermal overload relays
Trip class 10 A 10 20 30
Max. trip time at 1.5 x current setting (s) 120 240 480 720
(warm state)
Trip time at 7.2 x current setting (s) 2...10 4...10 6...20 9...30
(cold state)
Notes
When the tripping time of 30 s is exceeded (at 7.2 x setting current from cold state) instead of the tripping class the maximum tripping time in seconds is indicated.
Our thermal overload relays can also be used for protection of motors in the degree of protection EExe. For the selection of the thermal overload relays, please
provide the following information: IA / IN and the TE-time. Information can be taken from the motor rating label.
When thermal overload relays are used in star-delta assemblies, set relay pointer to 0.58 times the value of the rated motor current or select suitable model.

Brief description
In safety positions -A- and -H- the button functions for switching are locked whereas in positions -HAND- and -AUTO- the switching and the simulation of tripping
directly at the relay is possible by operating the multi-function button.
In positions -H- and -HAND- the tripped relay must be reset manually, whereas in positions -AUTO- and -A- the tripped relay is reset automatically.
The setting of the functions is done by gently turning the red function selection knob (FWK) to the marks of the grey RESET-button (R). Passing from -HAND- to -AUTO-
the grey RESET-button must be slightly pressed at the same time.

Short-circuit limiting
To increase the Icu/Ics, the MSU-K can be combined with the short-circuit limiter MSU-L20.
For this combination there are the following values for rated service short-circuit breaking capacity :
Notes
1)
Icu = Rated maximum short-circuit breaking capacity
2)
Ics = Rated service short-circuit breaking capacity

The "characteristic curve" of the thermal overcurrent trip device shows tripping for all setting ranges as a function of the multiple of the set current value, and
represents the mean value of the scatter bands in the cold condition.
When switchgear is at operating temperature, the trip time of the thermal overcurrent trip device is reduced to approx. 25 % of the values shown.

Special features MSU-K manual motor starters have a high breaking capacity up to 6.3 A : ∞ up to 10 A; 6 kA, up to
High breaking capacity 25 A : 4 kA at 400 V. This is made possible by a modern design, by which very short break times are
achieved. Because of this, the circuit breakers have become limiters. The advantages are :
- Back-up fuses are only necessary at rated equipment currents > 2,5 A and 400 V.
- The dynamic and thermal loading of electrical installation components at short-circuit is reduced.
Short-circuit limiter By the use of the short-circuit current limiter, the short-circuit breaking capacity of the MSU circuit
breakers of ≥ 6.3 A-25 A rated current at 380/415 V is increased to 50 kA. Fuses can largely be
eliminated.
Temperature compensation To achieve high tripping accuracy over a large ambient temperature range, MSU-K manual motor
starters are temperature compensated from -5°C ... +55°C
Integrable shunt release Undervoltage or open-circuit tripping devices, as well as alarm contacts, can be integrated in the
and alarm contacts equipment. Contour and dimensions of the equipment remain unchanged.
Operating safety in accordance The equipment cap covers the terminal screws. This meets the safety requirements of VDE 0106
with VBG 4 Part 100 and VBG 4.
Simple mounting The manual motor starter is easily clipped on to a mounting rail (DIN EN 50 022) by an integral snap-
on mount.
Convenient and rapid connection Captive terminal screws supplied in the "open" position allow time-saving and simple connection :
insert the wire, tighten screws, done. Time and effort for unscrewing of the terminal is eliminated and
terminal parts can no longer go astray.
Easy auxiliary switch mounting Auxiliary switches are necessary for signalling or for interlocking circuitry. ENTRELEC-SCHIELE has
selected modular construction to avoid mistakes during assembly. Simple adaptation to requirements
is possible and stocking reduced.
Modular construction The equipment is designed such that its shape is identical with that of automatic circuit breakers.
Because of this, it can easily be installed in flush-mounted distribution systems. When an auxiliary
switch is attached, the manual motor starter has the same overall width as a 3-pole automatic circuit
breaker.
Accessories To ensure optimum protection against dust and water in all applications, the range includes three
Protective casing types of enclosures, of impact-resistant insulation material and of protection types IP 41 and IP 55.
The protection level can be increased to IP 55 by an additional kit. The circuit breaker can be clipped
into all types of casing. The sizes of enclosures are such that even switchgear with an auxiliary switch
attached to it can easily be fitted and the terminal compartment for cable connection is ample in size.
Auxiliary switches for side mounting, Five different auxiliary switch blocks can be supplied. After removing the front cover, the block can
on right and left hand side be snapped in without tools.
Auxiliary switch for internal fitting Remove the front cover and snap in the auxiliary switch block.
Three-phase busbars Our three-phase busbars for 4 connections are suitable for parallel connection of any number of
for Vu = 660 V, Iu = 80 A manual motor starters with auxiliary switch blocks fitted provided the Ith of 63 A is not exceeded. The
first busbar is used - in combination with the incoming supply block MSU-G 4 - for supplying the
system and for parallel connection of the first manual motor starter. Manual motor starters can be
connected additionally to each additional busbar in parallel, as required, and without cutting the bar
to length. The incoming supply can also be connected at the center or on both sides. The gives good
load distribution.
Typical applications page 1701.
Additional covering is not necessary, because both switchgear and busbars are safe to touch (satisfy
VDE 0106 Part 100) in the basic versions. Unused outlets have a shock protection cover.

Short-circuit limiter Iu = 32 A By attaching the short-circuit limiter to the manual motor starter, back-up fuses can be dispensed with
for all non-intrinsically safe equipment ≥ 2,5 A - 25 A at 400 V. The rated breaking capacity Icn (of the
combination of manual motor starter and short-circuit limiter) is increased as a result of heavy current
limitation and short break time (see page 1695). With this, it is possible to use the switchgear combination
in the power system where the prospective short-circuit current exceeds the "normal" switching capacity
of the manual motor starter. The short-circuit limiter can be used - taking into account the continuous
current Iu - as individual or group protection for several MSU-K ... manual motor starters.
Typical applications page 1701.
Shunt release Undervoltage trip MSU..B for protection from hazardous re-starting of machines after power failure.
Open circuit shunt release Open circuit shunt release MSU-D.. for control and interlocking purposes are inserted under the
switchgear cover.
Mounting of the shunt release and After removing the cover, these can be clipped in with a "handle" and the connections on the knock-
alarm contact out of the cover are turned outwards. The above assembly procedure also applies to alarm contacts.
Emergency stop button When manual motor starters are to be used as emergency stop devices, this can be done with
emergency stop button sets
- MSU-K 3 (spring return)
- MSU-K 2 (stay put, released by key)
- MSU-K 1 (stay put, released by pulling)
Fixing is with 4 screws from the inside of the cover.
Interlocking devices When used as a main switch, the manual motor starter must be lockable in the off position in accordance
with VDE 0113. This requirement can be fulfilled using the interlocking device MSU-V 1. It is fixed
with 4 screws from the inside of the casing (only with MSU-C and MSU-P) and is located such that
by-passing of the interlock - e.g. by removing the casing cover - is impossible.
Indicator light For visual indication of the switch position (enclosed equipment), the indicator light MSU-SL can be
supplied. After breaking out a knock-out on the casing cover, the light is pushed through from the
front and fastened with screws from the rear and is then electrically connected.
Alarm contact The alarm contact MSU-A has alarm signaling function. Ist N/O or N/C contact is actuated when
thermal or electromagnetic release - fault - takes place. It does not respond to manual actuation of
the MSU-K.
