SIMPLE – PAST – FUTURE

1. SIMPLE PRESENT:

 The simple present tense is used for things you do every day. (routine)
 Use don´t – doesn´t to make negative questions.
 Remember: Does ( He – She – It) Third Person Do (I – You – We – They)
 Spelling Rules for the third person (He – She – It) in positive sentences.

a) Add “S” Example: work = she works


b) Add “ES” ( If the verb finishes in: ch, sh, s, o, x) Example: Go = he goes
c) Add “IES”(If the verb finishes in Y, add ies) Example: Study = He studies

Examples:

- My father makes dinner from Monday to Friday.


- Anna likes rock music. She loves Bon Jovi.
- My sister doesn´t have a lot of hobbies.
- When does the movie start?
- How often do you text your brother?
- Does Jane eat fruits and vegetables every day?
- The student studies English every day at home to pass the cycle.

2. PRESENT CONTINUOUS:

 This tense is used for things that are happening now, at this moment.
 Use the verb to be (AM – IS – ARE) + a verb + (ing)

Examples:

- I am cooking a delicious pasta for dinner.


- What are you doing? I´m checking my e mail.
- It´s raining. You need your umbrella.
- Jhon is wearing a nice black suit.
- They aren´t making a big mistake.
- Anna is sitting next to Cesar today.
- Is she listening to pop music in class?
- My dad is working very hard to pay my studies.

3. SIMPLE PAST:

 Use the simple past tense to talk about finished actions in the past.
 Use Did for negative and interrogative sentences.
 Many common verbs are Irregular and others are Regulars. For example
Regular Verbs Irregular Verbs

Cook – cooked speak - spoke

Listen – listened drive - drove

Walk – walked do - did

Work – worked make - made

Play- played …… eat – ate …….

Examples:

- You went to Paris to visit your family last year.


- My little brother watched TV for 2 hours yesterday.
- I didn´t go to the movies yesterday. I was in bed.
- Did your friends arrive at 8: 00 a. m. yesterday morning?
- Did he buy apples and oranges for breakfast?
- Lina didn´t study because she had a lot of homeworks.

4. PAST CONTINUOUS:

 Use the past continuous to describe an action or activity in progress at the


specific moment in the past.
 Use the past of be WAS - WERE.

Present ( be)

He – She – It = IS You – We – They = ARE

I = AM

Past (be)

He – She – It = WAS You – We – They = WERE

I = WAS

Examples:

- My friends were having lunch.


- Were they living in Arequipa?
- My sister Jacky was eating a big sandwich at Glorieta restaurant.
- They were playing video games instead of studying.
- He met his wife when he was living in Japan.
- I wasn´t listening to you.
- He wasn´t driving his car because it didn´t work.
5. FUTURE: BE GOING TO

 Use this tense to talk about future plans or intentions.


 Use be going to + verb (base form)

Examples:

- She is going to cook an interesting meal tonight.


- My mom is going to buy a book.
- The students aren´t going to be late.
- It isn´t going to rain. The sun shines a lot.
- Are you going to wear that red dress?
- Is she going to play soccer on Saturday night?

6. FUTURE: WILL – WON´T

 Use Will for future predictions, for making decisions, offering and promising.
 In positive sentences use WILL, in negative sentences use WON´T.

Examples:

- I will help you with those suitcases.


- I think. It won´t rain.
- I am very hungry. I will buy something to eat.
- Don´t worry. I´m sure you will pass the English Quiz.
- She won´t read that book. It´s boring.
- Will they study for the English exam?
