1. The thin ring can be adjusted vertically between three equally long cables from
which the 100-kg chandelier is suspended. If the ring remains in the horizontal
plane and the tension in each cable is not allowed to exceed 1kN, determine the
smallest allowable distance z required for equilibrium.
2. If each member of the space truss can support a maximum force of 600 N in
compression and 800 N in tension, determine the greatest force F the truss can
support.
3. The cantilever retaining wall shown in the Figure above retains soil having unit
weight of 18 and angle of shearing resistance of . Unit weight of the
concrete is 23.5 . Neglect the effect of the soil on the right side of the
wall.
a. Calculate the factor of safety against sliding if the coefficient of the friction
between the base and the foundation is 0.60.
b. Calculate the maximum service moment at the stem per meter length of the
wall.
c. If the stem is to be reinforced with 20 mm bars with centroid 85 mm from
the extreme concrete, what is the required spacing of bars? Use = 27MPa
and = 375MPa.
4. The column shown in the Figure (b = 500 mm, h = 700 mm) is subjected to
shear force parallel to 500 mm side. The column is reinforced with 8-30 mm
longitudinal bars. Allowable concrete shear stress for shear parallel to the 500
mm side is 0.88 MPa. Concrete strength = 27 MPa and steel strength for both
longitudinal and confining reinforcement is 417 MPa. The ties are all 12 mm in
diameter with clear cover of 40 mm. = 580 kN.
a. Calculate the load it can support if the inner spring is stressed to its limit of
20,000 psi.
b. Calculate the corresponding load in the outer spring if the inner spring is
stressed to its limit of 20,000 psi.
c. Compute the maximum load that will not exceed a shearing stress of 20,000
psi in either spring. Use G = psi.

5.21.4.4.2 Transverse reinforcement shall be spaced at distance not exceeding (a) one-
quarter of the minimum member dimension, (b) six times the diameter of longitudinal
reinforcement, and (c) as defined by Eq. 21-5
