◊◊˝Summary of Macbeth˝◊◊

Before describing the summary of Macbeth we must know the main characters of
this drama. The main protagonists or characters have been narrated below.

1. Duncan: good king of Scotland.

2. Macbeth: a great worrior, loyal person to king Duncan. He killed king Duncan and become
later king of Scotland.

3. Lady Macbeth: Wife of Macbeth. She is a ambitious women who lust for power and
position.

4. Banquo: A general in Duncan’s army and a close friend of Macbeth. But in the middle of this
drama he is killed by the murderers haired by Macbeth.

5. Macduff: A general in Duncan’s army who became suspicious of Macbeth’s part in the
king’s murder. And at last, he kill Macbeth.

5. Witches: Three witches predict for Macbeth and Banquo. And their predictions constitute
the main action of this drama.

6. Malcom and Donalbain: Both of them are the sons of king Duncan.

7. Fleance: the son of Banquo .

8. Lennox, Ross, Menteth, Angus, Caithness: Thanes who eventually turn against Macbeth.

Macbeth is the main protagonist of this drama. In the very beginning of the play, Macbeth is a
loyal Thane and a brave fighter to king of Duncan of Scotland. One day Macbeth and Banquo is
coming back home from a battle against Macdonald. On the way, they meet with three witches.
The witches say a mysterious speech “Fair is foul and foul is fair”. Then the witches
predict for Macbeth that “Macbeth will be the Thane of Cawdor” “the Thane of
Glamis” and “be the king hereafter”. The witches also predict for Banquo saying “He will
be the father of a line of kings”. After witches disappear, Macbeth is informed that he becomes
the Thane of Cawdor. After the fulfillment of first prediction he begins look forward to the
fulfillment of final prediction. And so he decides to be the king of Scotland killing the present
king Duncan.

When Macbeth and Banquo meet with king Duncan, Duncan informed that he will visit the
castle (home) of Macbeth. Meanwhile Macbeth send a letter to his wife describing the whole
story of witches. Knowing the news Lady Macbeth begins a dream to be Queen of this kingdom.
So, Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth to kill king Duncan so that they can king and queen. Macbeth
don’t agree with the worse proposal but at last he forced by his wife lady Macbeth to kill Duncan
and Macbeth kill the Duncan while the drunken bodyguard of king sleep. (There is also a scene of bloody dagger).

Next day in the morning, Macduff and Lennox come to the castle to meet with Duncan but
Macduff discover Duncan’s dead body. Hearing the death news of father, the sons of Duncan
named Malcom and donalbain doubt that Macbeth has killed their father and fear that may be
they are the next to be killed by Macbeth and so they decide to flee from the Scotland. As a
result, Malcom and Donalbain fall under suspicious. Macbeth is thus crowned king of Scotland.

One day Macbeth recall the prediction of witches about Banquo that Banquo will be the father of
a line of kings. So he decides to kill Banquo and his son Fleance. So killer are haired to kill them
and they killed Banquo but can’t kill Fleance. Cause Fleance flees away. (A ghost of Banquo’s scene is added
here) .
Meanwhile , Macbeth’s thanes begin to turn against him. On the other hand Macduff and
Malcom meet in England to prepare an army against Macbeth.

In a dark and stormy night, Macbeth further meet three witches to know his prediction. The
witches introduce three apparitions. First apparition is an armed hand which indicates that
Macduff is coming back to kill him. Second apparition is a bloody child that means no man
born of women can do harm his. Third apparition is a child wearing crown and holding a
branch of tree that indicates Macbeth shall never vanished until the great Burnam wood come
against him.

At last, Macbeth has been slain by Macduff according to the prophecies of three apparitions.
Cause Macduff comes to fight against Macbeth carrying branches of tree that seems like Birnam
Wood. And he reveals on the battlefield that he was removed from his mother womb prematurely
by means of a surgical operation.
