Welcome to the third instalment of the DIT Rugby Club Newsletter. Another
busy few weeks since the last newsletter with the 1st XV and Freshers XV both
having games. We have also welcomed new scholars into the club and they are
working to improve the club both on and off the field. Tag Rugby has been
continuing weekly in Larkin College with increasing numbers each week which is
great to see and last but by no means least Women’s Rugby continues each
week and we’d love to see more girls coming along and taking part!
Aside from the on-field stuff there’s also plenty going on off the field with the
club hoping to run a table quiz in the next couple of weeks as well as other club
social events before the Christmas break, and we also have the Associate
Referee’s Course on in January in Aungier St. along with the possibility of a
coaching course if there’s enough interest.
Make sure to add the Club’s Facebook Page to keep up to date on what’s going
on!
Enjoy….

Men’s Results
In the second 1st XV game of the year, DCU were the visitors to
Grangegorman for a local derby. This was a much improved performance from
DIT and only for some missed tackles when DCU exerted pressure on their line
they could easily have come out on top. DIT played the better rugby for much
of the game and tries from Darren Buttle, David Sheridan and Cormac Treacy
along with the trusty boot of Gearoid McDonald kept the lads involved right up
to the final whistle before coming out on the wrong side of the 34-25 scoreline.
The next 1st XV game is on Wednesday the 24th at home to Coleraine, and the
2nd XV have a game the week after at home to IADT so attendance at training is
vital over the next couple of weeks.
The Freshers XV had their first game of the season this week and faced the
daunting prospect of the long trip up to Jordanstown. Due to having a bye in
the first round of games the Freshers team have had to wait longer than most
other teams for their first game and this hunger was evident in the first half of
this game when DIT were on top in all phases of play and the forward pack in
particular demonstrated great cohesiveness and their mauling was a joy to
behold, which was remarkable considering it contained 3 players who normally
reside in the backs. 2 penalties from the boot of Gearoid McDonald had DIT
ahead 6-3 at half time, however Jordanstown were able to call on some more
experienced players off their bench and the difference showed with them
scoring 4 tries in the second half to win 27-6. While the result was
disappointing, the performance was far from so with a number of players
playing for the first time and with some more training and better execution
when in the opposition 22 this team will certainly be a force to be reckoned with
this year.

Women’s Rugby
Tag Rugby
Tag Rugby is continuing every Tuesday from 7.30-9pm in its new location of
Larkin College on Cathal Brugha St
(http://www.larkincommunitycollege.ie/location.html). There’s still room for
more people to come along so I encourage people to come down and give it
a try, it’s great fun, a good social sport for both men and women, and it’s a
good workout on a Tuesday evening!!!
For anyone who doesn’t know Tag Rugby that well it’s an exciting and dynamic
team sport that can be played by both men and women of all ages and skill
levels. It’s completely non-contact and is primarily about running and passing,
where agility, speed and good hand-eye coordination are more important skills
than brute force and strength.
The club hope to hold a (much needed) fund-raising table quiz in the next
couple of weeks in Fitzgeralds, our sponsors. Keep an eye on your emails for
more details and hopefully you can come along and take part to support your
club.
