ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

Among all the concerns about the environment, I have chosen in the power point to
discuss the “Solid Waste Management”. It is the collecting, treating, and disposing of solid
material that is discarded because it is no longer useful. Improper disposal of solid waste can
create unsanitary conditions and it can lead to pollution of the environment and may spread
diseases by insects. They also pose a wide variety of economic and social problems that must
be managed and solved.

The sources of solid waste include residential, commercial, and industrial activities.
Certain types of wastes are classified as hazardous that cause immediate danger to individuals
and even the environment. There are different types of waste like garbage such as
decomposable food waste and trash that includes bulky items which requires special collection
and handling. Another type of solid waste is electronic waste which includes discarded
computer equipment, TV, telephones and other variety of electronic devices. Lead and mercury
are among materials of concern in electronic devices that can be harmful both in human and
the environment, so it requires right regulation of recycling and disposal.

Proper solid-waste management is important for the protection of public health, safety,
and environmental quality. Once collected, it can also serve to recover certain materials, as well
as for recycling or reuse. As long as people have been living in certain areas, garbage or solid
waste has been an issue. Waste management is all about how solid waste can be changed and
used as a valuable resource. So every household must embrace and know how to manage solid
wastes. Every day, tons of solid waste is disposed to landfill sites and it may produce foul smell
if waste is not stored and treated properly.

Overall, proper solid-waste management is important in environmental conservation that

should be observed by individuals and companies globally. This will keep the environment clean
and reduce health and settlement problems. Its goal is to reduce and eliminate impacts of
waste materials to support economic development and quality of life. This is to be done in the
most efficient manner possible, to keep costs low and prevent waste build-up.
