Unit 10:
10: Quadratic Equations

Quiz #1 – Quadratic Equations – Answer Key

1. Evaluate the following square roots. If the solution is not a whole number, then approximate and
round to the nearest hundredth. (1 point each)

a. √81 b. −√121 c. √59

d.

a. 9

b. – 11

c. 7.68

d. 7/5

2. Solve for y. 3y2 – 15 = 33 (2 points)

3y2 – 15 + 15 = 33 + 15 Add 15 to both sides.

3y2 = 48 Simplify (33+15 = 48)
3y2/3 = 48/3 Divide by 3 on both sides
Y2 = 16 Simplify (48/3=16)
 = ± √16 Take square root of both sides
Y = ±4 Final Answer

3. Solve for t. 137 = -25+2t2 (2 points each)

2t2 – 25 = 137 Rewrite in standard form.

2t2 – 25 + 25 = 137 + 25 Add 25 to both sides.
2t2 = 162 Simplify (137+25 = 162)
2t2/2 = 162/2 Divide by 2 on both sides
t2 = 81 Simplify (162/2=81)
√ = ± √81 Take square root of both sides
t = ±9 Final Answer

10: Quadratic Equations

4. Solve for x. 1/3x2 – 4 = 8 (2 points)

1/3x2 – 4 + 4 = 8 + 4 Add 4 to both sides.

1/3x2 = 12 Simplify (8+4 = 12)
(3)1/3x2 = 12(3) Multiply by 3 on both sides to get rid of the fraction
x2 = 36 Simplify (12(3)=36)
√ = ±√36 Take square root of both sides
x = ±6 Final Answer

5. In the following right triangle, x = √18. Find the length of side y. (2 points)
a 2 + b 2 = c2 Let side y = b in the equation

(18)2 + b2 = 92 Substitute
9 y
18 + b2 = 81 Square each term

X 18-18 +b2 = 81 – 18 Subtract 18 from both sides

b2 = 63 Simplify (81-18 = 63)

√ = √63 Take the square root of each side.

b = 7.94

The length of side y = 7.94

6. In the following right triangle, y = √45. Find the length of x. (2 points)

The length of x is the hypotenuse of the right triangle.
y x a2 + b2 = c2

(8.5)2 + (45) = c2

8.5 72.25 + 45 = c2

117.25 = c2

√117.25 =

10.83 = c

The length of x is 10.83

Unit 10:
10: Quadratic Equations

7. The area of a square is 182.25 in2. What is the perimeter of the square. Explain how you
determined your answer. (3 points)

The formula for area of a square is: A = s2. We don’t know the length of the side, but we know the
area, so let’s substitute.

A = s2

182.25 = s2

√182.25 =

13.5 = s

The length of the side is 13.5. All four sides of the square are the same size, so we can use this
information to help us find the perimeter.

The formula for perimeter of a square is: P = 4s, so let’s substitute.

P = 4s

P = 4(13.5)

P = 54 in.

Explanation: I first use the Area of a square formula to solve for the length of the side of the
square. I found the side to be 13.5 in. Then I found the perimeter of the square by multiplying
the length of the side by 4 since all four sides are the same length. The perimeter of the square
is 54 in.
8. A ladder that is 16.5 feet tall is placed against the side of a tree. The base of the tree to the top
of the ladder is a distance of 14 feet. How far is the ladder placed away from the base of the tree?
(3 points)

Use the Pythagorean Theorem to solve for the missing leg (b).

A2 + B2 = C2
Tree ladder (16.5) 142 + B2 = 16.52
196 + B2 = 272.25
14 196 – 196 +B2 = 272.25 – 196
B2 = 76.25
 = √76.25
Distance from base of tree B = 8.73
(b) The ladder was placed about 8.73 feet away from the base of
the tree.
