JESUS WAS A MAN,

JUST LIKE US
“REMIND THEM ABOUT
JESUS”
James 5: 17
Elijah was a man just like us…
James 5:16 Therefore, confess your sins to one
another and pray for one another, that you may
be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has
great power…Elijah was a man just like us…
JESUS WAS A MAN,
JUST LIKE US
“I tell you the truth, anyone who
believes in me will do the same works
I have done, and even greater works,
because I am going to be with the
Father.

JOHN 14:12
2 “GREAT” WORKS
GOD CALLS US TO
1. The Great Commandments - love
God, love your neighbour
2. The Great Commission - make
disciples of all nations
#2 is a follow on and fulfilment of #1
Important: Jesus lived humanly just like
we do.
“Now since the children have flesh and
blood in common, Jesus also shared in
these”
HEBREWS 2:14
We can only fulfil Jesus’
commandments by walking like him
JESUS IS NOT ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN

JESUS WAS A MAN, JUST LIKE US

1. Jesus’ ministry was
incarnational
John 1:14,
“The Word became
flesh and dwelt among us”
The ministry of Jesus was
incarnational—God in a
human body.
“Incarnational ministry”:
—ministry done in the style,
manner and attitude of
Jesus.
WHAT DOES JESUS
LOOK LIKE?
WHAT DOES YOUR
JESUS LOOK LIKE?
Identify with the people.
Become one of them.
The message does not
change, the methods
always can.
The incarnation meant
Jesus had problems…
just like us
His parents didn’t understand
him—Lk 2:50.
His family thought he was
mad Mk 3:21.
He created the universe, yet
felt hungry and had no home
Lk 4/Matt 8.
On the night before he died his
closest followers were arguing
about who of them was the
greatest Lk 22:24
When he was arrested his
friends all fled Matt 26:56.
Being incarnational ministers in the
same way as Jesus means identifying
with Christ.
Often this requires our weakness not
our strength.
2. Jesus lived in prayer
“Prayer was the atmosphere
in which he [Jesus] lived; it
was the air he breathed.”
James Thomson
“Jesus was a man of prayer
whose natural response…
was to seek God alone in
prayer.”
James Dunn
Jesus followed Jewish tradition—
pray 3 times daily:
Morning prayer (shacharit)
Afternoon prayer (minchah)
Evening prayer (arvithor maariv ).
Jesus clearly prays more than
the usual traditions.
Mark 1:35,
Before daybreak the
next morning, Jesus got
up and went out to an
isolated place to pray.
Busy the night before.
Need extra sleep?
Jesus’ priority.
Lonely place.
His desire shows.
After feeding the 5000,
Mk 6:42-46,
45 Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that
his disciples get back into the boat and
head across the lake to Bethsaida, while he
sent the people home.

Mk 6:42-46,

his disciples get back into the boat and

sent the people home.
46 After telling everyone good-bye, he went
up into the hills by himself to pray.
Luke 5:16, “But he would
withdraw to desolate places
and pray”
Also translated “was
regularly withdrawing and
praying”
“…increasing crowds, the demands
on Jesus’ time, and the fact that
no one else could duplicate his
ministry did not stop Jesus
spending long times in prayer.”
Ajith Fernando
Freshness and passion are lost by not praying.
Gifts and training are no substitute for time in
God’s presence.
Are you battling to pray
more, or do you give in?
“Prayer ranks first in the
coming of revival…There
cannot be revival unless
Christians pray for it.”
Earle E. Cairns

3. Jesus lived by the Word
The Scriptures were central to the
life of Jesus:
Jesus quotes the Old Testament
Scriptures 90+ times.
He refers to over 70 different Old
Testament chapters.
Jesus…
knew the Scriptures,
studied the Scriptures,
used the Scriptures in
everyday life.
Do you?
4. Jesus lived in the Spirit
And you know that God anointed
Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy
Spirit and with power. Then Jesus
went around doing good and
healing all who were oppressed
by the devil, for God was with
him.
ACTS 10:38
Jesus also had been baptized and
was praying, the heavens were
opened, and the Holy Spirit
descended on him in bodily form,
like a dove; and a voice came
from heaven, “You are my beloved
Son; with you I am well pleased.”
LUKE 3:21-22
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he
has anointed me to bring Good News to
the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim that captives
will be released, that the blind will see,
that the oppressed will be set free,
19 and that the time of the Lord’s favor
has come.”

An Apostolic Spirit
“But you will receive power when
the Holy Spirit has come on you,
and you will be my witnesses in
Jerusalem, in all Judea and
Samaria, and to the ends of the
earth.”
ACTS 1:8
Are you a witness?
Would you go if God said to?
What choices you have made would
stop you obeying?
A Powerful Spirit
“The Spirit of the Lord…anointed…to
proclaim that captives will be
released…blind will see…the
oppressed will be set free”
Acts 1: 8
Jesus came to proclaim the
Kingdom, not just words—but in
power.
Healings, Demons cast out,
Nature bows, Life in all its fulness
Martyn Lloyd-Jones to his church,
"I want to talk to you today about the baptism of the
Holy Spirit…I want to know, have you experienced
the fullness of the Spirit? I know that all of you
would want to say, 'we got it all at conversion;
there's no need for any more experience…
“Well," said Lloyd-Jones, "I have only
one other question to ask you.
If you got it all at conversion, where in
God's name is it?"
Is speaking in tongues enough?
Is your life evidence of being filled
with the Holy Spirit?
