An essay
On
A skill I have built during the lockdown.

The number of COVID-19 cases in India is rising therefore the government of India
implemented a lockdown across the nation to contain the disease. COVID-19 is a virus that
spreads from one infected person to another, so this step was taken to prevent community
transmission of this deadly virus and break the chain of transmission. The government has issued
advisories to all the citizens to practice social distancing and stay at home.

The world has never seen a time like this. It is unprecedented. Most of us are almost confined,
working from home. As the world comes to grips with this pandemic, it is totally upto us to turn
this adversity to our advantage. Every crisis is an opportunity in disguise. Why should we waste
this crisis? The time is just right to seize this opportunity to invest in ourselves and upgrade our
skills for accelerated growth.

As quarantine period has been extended, I’ve been trying to find a good balance between
relaxing and rejuvenating whilst also being productive. Since I still have a few days left to
prepare for my final jury, I try to set a goal for myself each week outlining which assignments I
want to work on or submit.  This way, I’m still getting things done, but not trying to do
everything in one week and then burning out or submitting work that’s not my best.  Here are a
few of the things I’ve been trying to do to stay productive during this unprecedented time:
Whatever I want to achieve in this world, one thing is very important to understand that before I
reach my goal, before I set my goal or before I desire for something, it is very important to have
a positive attitude, I have to get rid of the pessimist streak in me which will cause hinder the
progress every time if things doesn’t go my way.

Here I want to appreciate my pre-existing skill that is time management by which I could
develop my other abilities. It equips me to recognize and solve problems well in time. With good
time management skills I am in control of my time and my life, of my stress and energy levels. I
am able to maintain balance between my work, personal, and family lives. I’ll have enough
flexibility to respond to surprises or new opportunities.

Reading is one of the best skills I have developed in this quarantine period. I usually never
wanted to pick up a book after spending hours in college.  But now that I’ve got so much free
time I am really enjoying getting back into reading for fun.  When I want to learn something new
I try a non-fiction book, or, if I want to be entertained, I try a good novel. Mystery and crime
novels are my go-to at the moment.

Nothing makes me feel more productive than a clean room, clear workspace, and de cluttered
computer. I’ve de cluttered everything from my closet, my kitchen, and my computer during
lockdown so far. I love getting rid of things that i don’t use anymore and try to donate what I can
especially clothes that are still in good condition.

Workout is another skill I have developed in this lockdown period. Even though I am restricted
to step out of the house, I believe some form of physical exercise is a must. Using this time to
better my health and keep myself motivated, I try some home workout. There are many online
tutorials that I have found to guide myself through a home workout.  Getting into a good exercise
routine during quarantine would help me stay motivated in future once I go back to my normal
schedule. Getting out and enjoying the weather puts me in a good mood and boost my super
productive day.

Another skill I want to talk about here is, I have learnt coding. For all IT students, this may not
be applicable but I could definitely use this to advance my existing skills. I have also built a
website using HTML and CSS coding.
Cooking is my favorite skill that I have built in this quarantine period. There is a times when I
am out of ‘good’ grocery and have to make something out the leftover grocery. This is when I
searched recipes online and got creative with cooking. Now I have been regularly cooking and I
suppose the habit will stick even once I would back to work.

I have built my active listening skills. Apart from hobbies, I also used this time to improve my
soft skills that were causing trouble at work place. Since I am communicating with my college
friends or faculties virtually, I have been putting some extra effort at listening to each word they
speak. The same habit I practiced even in my normal conversations, and I built an active
listening skill. Listening is a sacred skill that would help me in professional as well as my
personal life.

Apart from this I have learned French language to some extent. This is a skill that I can add to
my CV as well. It can even open up new avenues in my career later on. Apart from social
communication, a new language made me an active listener, flexes my cognitive capabilities and
helped me grasp new concepts better. It is refreshing and fun to learn a new language and today,
we have apps that help us to learn it. A new language has multiple benefits and is a fun
experience, it needs focus and dedication. There are many websites and apps that offer language
courses which I have adapted. Some of them even offer a certificate if we complete the course.

I always wanted to be more flexible and this quarantine period was the perfect time to get Yoga
started. Yoga is a form of exercise that includes slow movements and stretching that enhanced
my strength, stamina and flexibility. The best part was I only needed yoga mat and could do it
anywhere as it requires no special equipment. Practicing yoga also calms the mind. To get the
maximum benefits from yoga, it is important to pay attention to our diet. Include plenty of
vegetables, fruits and nuts in our daily diet and reduce the consumption of processed foods.

Another skill I want to talk about is about my decision making ability. I improved my decision
making skills to solve problems by doing exercises like selecting one course of action from
several possible alternatives and I judged me myself. Decision making skills are also a key
component of time management skills. Decision Making can be hard, almost any decision
involves some conflicts or dissatisfaction. The difficult part is to pick one solution where the
positive outcome can outweigh possible losses. Avoiding decisions often seems easier. Yet,
making my own decisions and accepting the consequences are the only way to stay in control of
my time, my success, and my life.
