Main lesson:  Jacob 5 is the longest chapter in the Book of Mormon. It is the allegory of the olive
tree. Start by displaying the definition of an allegory and teaching what it is. Then begin your study.
I recommend listening this chapter on audio while you follow along, stopping as you need to with
your children to discuss. Young children can color their vineyard scene and cut and paste the
branches on each time the bible story talks about a branch being trimmed or grafted in. This is a
good way to keep hands on and minds on through lots of reading. This bible study is important with
beautiful imagery so take your time and make it the sole focus of your main lesson this week. Once
you make it through the story you can use the olive tree timeline to review what was learned. The
images here help us understand what was being taught and the representation in the verses. Use
the visual aide in the manual on page 49 to help you understand the allegory. This provides a great
recap on some difficult concepts. As you close your lesson feel free to talk about missionary work
and how we can all be missionaries now. See below for more activites on this.
