Plastic is one of the world’s most-used materials. Technically sophisticated,
lightweight and cheap, plastics suit a broad spectrum of uses. Plastic waste comprises of around 13% of the total waste stream in Peshawar. The main theme of our research is to utilize this plastic as an insulator in buildings. For this purpose the plastic was melted and sheets were formed out of that. Currently we are in a process of modeling but till now so far, we are installing these sheets in the building and afterwards we will see its heat reducing capacity.
DESIRABILITY:
Plastic waste insulations are to be installed in structures under construction and
the ones with complete construction. It will tend to reduce temperature of structures and causes cooling effect. Plastic waste insulations will tend to lower electricity bills in summers with its lower cost. With existing crises of electricity and increase in global warming which gets earth more heated thus insulations are desirable for customers with its less cost and cooling effect that it produces.
FEASIBILTY:
Plastic bottles are commonly made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET),
which is the most recycled plastic in the world. During research it was found to turn plastic waste into insulation sheet that are soft, flexible, durable, extremely light, and easy to handle.
Arrival of complex PET packaging (trays, opaque bottles).they are placed in
mechanical recycling line. Then there occurs process of optical sorting in order to remove contaminants. Material is crushed and washed in water and proceed into flakes. Then there occurs dens meter separation to remove residual contaminants. There occurs chemical recycling in first reactor followed by adding additives in second reactor. Insulation sheets formed are stored in special tanks and then used for building application. VIABILITY:
In order for a product or material to be truly described as sustainable it must
be environmentally, economically and socially sustainable. These aspects have become known as the Three Pillars of Sustainability. Plastics make a positive contribution to all three pillars of sustainability. A sustainable building culture also looks for environmentally-friendly alternatives when it comes to insulation material. That is why natural insulation material is enjoying increased popularity. It is produced from renewable resources in a less energy- intensive process. From an environmental standpoint, recycled insulation materials go a step further, which are 100% made from recycled material. The energy consumption during their production is usually less than in the production of conventional insulation materials, which has a positive effect on their environmental footprint. All of these insulation materials are characterized by their very good insulation properties. Many are cheaper than the traditional options.
In the early stages of material recycling of used plastics, the possible
applications were still little researched and not as broadly established as they are today. Recycled products were only made in a relatively limited field: A classic example of this is park benches. With products such as thermal insulation from old PET bottles, the ecological sense of plastics recycling is indisputable today. The recycled material can be used as thermal and sound insulation for pitched roofs, attics, ceilings and wall structures. It is breathable, dimensionally-stable and emission-free. PET insulation is 80 percent recycled fibers. A total of 6,000 used PET bottles now have a new use in a single-family home.
