The mutual solubilities and related liquid–liquid equilibria of C8 – C17 alcohols with
water are exhaustively and critically reviewed. Reports of experimental determination of
solubility in 21 chemically distinct binary systems that appeared in the primary literature
prior to the end of 2004 are compiled. For 12 systems sufficient data are available to
allow critical evaluation. All data are expressed as mass percent and mole fraction as well
as the originally reported units. In addition to the standard evaluation criteria used
throughout the Solubility Data Series, a new method based on the evaluation of the all
experimental data for a given homologous series of saturated alcohols was used. © 2007

The reference solubility values of 共1兲 in 共2兲 were calcu-

lated by Eq. 共3兲. This equation has one term more than equa-
tion used for prediction and described in the Preface to Part
2.26 This term was added in order to describe the solubility
up to the temperature about 10 K below critical temperature
of the solubility 共T2c = 545 K兲:

ln x1 = ln x1,min + C1关T1,min/T − ln共T1,min/T兲兴

+ D1 exp关␣1共1 − T/T2c兲兴, 共3兲

where T1,min = 304.5 K, ln x1,min = −9.67, C1 = 41.3, D1

= 1.239, and ␣1 = −50.
The above listed values of T1,min, ln x1,min, are calculated
with Eqs. 共7兲 and 共9兲 given in the Preface to Part 2.26 C1, D1,
and ␣1 were adjusted to the experimental points. Up to about
470 K Eq. 共3兲 gives practically the same values as the gen-
eral equation used for prediction and described in the Preface
to Part 2.26 共see Table 18兲.
The criteria used to assign data to categories listed in
Table 19 are also described in the Preface to Part 2.26 All the
experimental data and reference values are listed in Table 20
and shown in Fig. 3. Some data used in this evaluation were
compiled for an earlier version of this work.8 Those compi-
lations are not reprinted here. New compilations are pre-
sented following this evaluation.

The cloud-point method was used. A known amount of one component 1-Tetradecanol + Water E726
was measured into a flask from a calibrated burette and weighed. The 1-Hexadecanol + Water E726–E727
second component was then added to the first in a dropwise manner, with 1-Heptadecanol + Water E727–E728, 728
constant agitation of the flask until the solution became turbid. The results
reported above are part of various ternary solubility measurements 共see
