Department Of Earthquake Engineering

About IIT R About EQD Structural
FacultyDynamics Students

Established in 1847 as College of Engineering, Roorkee. Asia’s first

engineering college

Completed 150 years of existence in Oct’96. On 21 Sept’01 declared as

nation’s 7th IIT.

Institute offers Bachelor’s Degree in 10 disciplines of engineering and

Postgraduate’s degree in 55 disciplines.

Institute provides facilities for doctoral and research work in all

department.

More than 8000 Residential students and core team of over 300
faculties.
About IIT R About EQD Structural Dynamics Students

Established in 1960,as School of Research and Training in Earthquake

Engineering.
Four major areas of earthquake engineering viz., Structural Dynamics, Soil
Dynamics, Engineering Seismology and Seismotectonics, and Instrumentation
have been nurtured for the last fifty years..

The department provides Master’s degree in three specializations namely,

Structural Dynamics, Soil Dynamics, and Seismic Vulnerability and risk
Assessment.
Structural Dynamics
About IIT R About EQD Structural Dynamics Students

The teaching methodology used is such that the students first learn the core concepts of
conventional structural engineering and then extend this knowledge to more complex
domains of dynamic forces, and their responses, making it a unique course in India.

COURSEWORK
• Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures
• Design of Steel Structures
• Finite Element Analysis For Static and Dynamic Problems
• Design of Masonry Structures
• Design of Bridges and Concrete Dams
• Advanced Earthquake Resistant Design of Structures
• Seismic Evaluation and Retrofitting
• Theory of Vibration
• Numerical Methods for analysis of systems

Department maintains a strong bond with IIT Roorkee alumni, which helps students with
strong industrial support & knowledge gaining.
What we learn….

Soil Dynamics
About IIT R About EQD Soil Dynamics Students
Compared to most disciplines of Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering is
quite young. Again, the teaching methodology used in the Department is such that the
students first learn the core concepts of conventional geotechnical engineering and then
extend this knowledge to more complex domains of dynamic force responses.

• Ground Improvement Techniques
• Seismic Slope Stability: Earth Dams & Retaining Walls
• Theory of Vibration
• Finite Element Method for Static & Dynamic Problems
• Numerical Methods for Dynamic Systems
• Earthquake Resistant Design of Masonry Structures
• Seismic Evaluation and Retrofitting of Structures

Department maintains a strong bond with IIT Roorkee alumni, which certainly helps
students with strong industrial support & knowledge gaining.
What we learn….
 Dynamic soil properties
 Ground response analysis
 Design of foundation for liquefiable soils

Seismic Vulnerability & Risk
Assessment
About IIT R About EQD SVRA Students

Seismic risk assessment deals with the evaluation of the probability of harm or damage
expected when humans or buildings those are vulnerable in a certain location is exposed to
an earthquake. Damage during earthquakes demonstrate the need for seismic risk
assessment for disaster management applications also. The estimated risk can be further
used to mitigate the risk through the calibration of seismic codes and to prioritize the
retrofit applications by examining cost/benefits studies.
