ITJ Boat Race: 9th Grade STEAMS Project.

Date: 21st June 2017

Place: Lamar Swimming Pool

Swimming Pool Rules:

Race Rules:

All teams should be aware of the swimming pool rules and should know the race logistics.

The race is a relay where 4 members of your team will alternate to move your boat to the other side of the swimming
pool and return it back to your starting position.

The winner of each race will be the team who have successfully transported four of their teammates legally and
successfully back to the starting position.

In the interest of safety (as it can be quite complicated to enter and exit your boat) there will be a compulsory minimum
time period of 30 (thirty) seconds between turns for each team member. This means that even if your transition takes
just 10 seconds, you will be made to wait there until the thirty seconds is up at which point the pool supervisor will allow
your race to continue. If you take longer than thirty seconds to transition, that is fine, however after 30 seconds you will
start to lose ground on your competitors.

Lane markings will be placed at each side of the swimming pool to signify your area of racing. If you leave your lane you
should return to your team where you will receive a time penalty.

While a team mate is racing the other team members should be waiting in their groups a minimum of two metres back
from the side of the pool. The only time the group can approach the pool side is during transition when the boat has
returned.

A completed length is credited when the boat pilot touches the side of the pool they are heading towards.

Disqualification if a boat is submerged under the water surface.

Method of movement should be by use of paddles only. No human contact with the water is allowed to aid movement,
boats cannot be towed, and no poolside team mates are permitted to aid the movement of the boat.

Warning Signals:

Green Flag: all competitors should continue to the nearest edge of the pool and wait until signal stops. Used in case of
obstructions in the pool such as a capsized boat interfering with an innocent competitor’s lane. (Ignoring this signal
incurs a 10 second time penalty at the next transition. Such a penalty will be implemented by the lane manager.)

Red Flag: Race cancelled. Used if there is an injury to a competitor which requires urgent attention, or other extreme
situations like if all boats capsize. Race will restart at the direction of the race referee.

White Flag: Raised when a team has completed the race.
