Translation studies is an academic interdiscipline dealing with the systematic study of the theory,
description and application of translation, interpreting, and localization. As an interdiscipline,
Translation Studies borrows much from the various fields of study that support translation. These
include comparative literature, computer science, history, linguistics, philology, philosophy, semiotics,
and terminology.

The term translation studies was coined by the Amsterdam-based American scholar James S. Holmes
in his paper "The name and nature of translation studies"

Definition of Translation

In general terms, the translation transforms the text into a source language SL into a correct and
understandable version of the target language TL without losing the original suggestion.

In general, it is suggested that translators meet three criteria:

 Knowledge of the source language

 Knowledge of the target language and
 Knowledge of the subject to do the job well

…..A deeper study of the art of translation requires more attention, not because it opens the way to
global interaction.

Translation studies can be safely included as an important genre in the field of literary criticism
because translation is an art that stimulates the diversity of linguistic, cultural and literary content of
a source language and thus highlights, reflects and appreciates the essence and kindness of literature
of that particular translated language.

The relevance of translation as a multi dimensional and multifaceted activity and its importance
internationally as a sociocultural bridge between countries has increased over the years.

Presently, the situation is changing rapidly in the world, not only must countries and societies interact
closely, but also individuals must also come into contact with members of communities and societies
scattered in different parts of the country and of the world.

In the earlier days, translation was considered to be a sub-branch of linguistics. Gradually it developed
into an inter-disciplinary field of study. Today, in this age of globalization, the scope of translation is
immense. Translation helps us to know about the developments in the field of creative arts,
education, literature, business, science and politics. It has shifted from the traditional conception of the
fixed, stable and unchangeable nature of the text and its meaning to a text with wide scope for
variations.

In the post-modern word, translation has become so relevant that people visualize it as a socio-
cultural bridge between communities and countries. People now feel the importance of interacting and
remaining connected with the people of other socio-cultural
Communities, both in their respective countries as well as countries across the world.
