A strap footing consist of two footings connected by a strap beam. This beam distributed the
column loads to each footing to make the net soil pressure with unfactored loads uniform and
equal at each footing and with factored design loads uniform but not necessarily equal. The
strap beam is cast on a compressible material capable of carrying the weight of the strap beam
only.
1. Which of the following gives the value of B1 and B2 of the strap footing below if
the allowable soil pressure is 450 kPa. Assume weight footing to be 10% of the
total load.
2. Which of the following gives the max shear of the footing.
3. Which of the following gives the maximum moment for the strap beam.
SOLUTION:
1. Value of B1 and B2 of the strap footing below if the allowable soil pressure is 450 kPa
P1 = (275 + 400) (1.10)
(including 10% wt. of footing)
P1 = 742.50 Kn
∑ MR 2 = 0
810
Area required =
450
B1 (1.2) = 1.8
B1 = 1.5
R1 + R2 = 742.50 + 1210
R2 = 742.50 + 1210 – 810
R2 = kN
1142.50
Area required = 450
P = 1.4 DL + 1.7 LL
P1 = 1.4 (275) + 1.7 (400)
P1 = 1065 kN
∑ MR 2 = 0
1162
q1 = 1.2
q1 = 968.3 Kn/m

R1 + R2 = 1065 + 1690
R2 = 1065 + 1690 – 1162
R2 = 1593 kN

q2 = 1.6
q2 = 995.6 kN/m
SEATWORK
A warehouse is located on the property line of the building site. The structural designer decides
to design a strap footing to support the exterior column load. Allowable net soil pressure 120
kPa. fcˈ = 20.7 MPa, fy = 414 MPa. Neglecting the weight of footings, strap floor slab, determine
the following:
1. Width of footing A.
2. Dimension of footing B
3. Factored shear and moment design for strap beam. Use2001 NSCP Specs.
