Science Fair

Alegria Bautista, Carolina Albuja,

Paula Evers, and Isabel Rengel
Introduction
School organized a science fair during quarantine. For our project we decided to count our
calories and see if we have been eating enough, more, or less than supposed too. We have been
counting our calories for a week and then answering all our questions with the data we recorded.

In the following slides you can see how we have been working and the results for our questions.

Question
Are we eating more than what we’re supposed to eat during quarantine? What are the
factors to know how many calories we have to eat a day?

Background information

- The amount of calories we are suggested to eat are affected by

many factors such as, height, age, and the amount of exercise we
do.
- Some studies have shown that a low fat diet affected 68% more than
a low carb diet with the same amount of calories.Concluding that
what we eat affects more than how many calories we eat.

Hypothesis
Since Quarantine started, we have eaten more than before, this has made us gain
weight. Because, at home we can eat at whatever time we want unlike when we are
at school. It is also possible that some people eat out of boredom or
nervousness.

We also think that to know how many calories you should consume you need to know
your height, your weight, your age, and how much exercise you do.
Testing the hypothesis, Experiment
To test our hypothesis and see if we are eating enough food we decided to first investigate how
many calories we are supposed to eat. When we found that information using a calorie calculator we
found online. First we added information like our age, our height, our weight, and how often we
exercise. Then for a week we wrote down what we ate in our “diary”. Every day we counted the
calories we ate. Each of us wrote the information in our diaries in a shared Google Document so we
could all organize the data. We also calculated an individual average of how many calories we
consumed in the week.

Analyze data
By analyzing our data we can observe that out of everyone Caro usually was
the one who ate the most. The rest of us didn't go over the number of calories
we were suggested to eat, or sometimes didn’t even reach it.

Individual Averages:

Caro: 1,867. 9

Paula: 1,790. 6

Ale: 1, 799. 3

Isa: 744. 1
Conclusion
We reject our hypothesis,we thought we were eating more but in average we
are consuming less than what we are supposed to eat. We support a part of
our hypothesis, the part that we mentioned the factors to know how many
calories we need to consume per day.We believe we are eating less since we
aren't doing as much physical activity.
Evaluation
There are some details we would like to have changed so our experiment
would be more fair.

● We would have loved to have been more precise with our

measurements.
● We could have used more sources to be more precise with how many
calories each food has, counting the additives.
● We could have counted how many calories there is in each element of
the food we consumed.
● We could have worked faster.
