Introduction:

Ductility test on the bitumen measures the

distance in centimeters (cm) of stretching of
bitumen before breaking , we do this under some
specified standard like : 1cm² cross – section ,
speed (5 cm/min) , temperature (25 ºC).

Purposes:
The purpose of this test is to determine the
measure of tensile properties of bituminous
materials and used to measure ductility for
specification requirements.
Materials and Apparatus:

Bitumen
Mold

Testing Machine for ductility Water bath

Thermometer Spatula
Procedures:
 Melt the bitumen until become fluid
 Assemble the mold on a brass plate and cover the
surface of plate and 2 sides of the mold only a and a' fig1 ,
with mixture of glycerin and dextrin, talc, or kaolin to
avoid sticking of the bitumen with plate and mold
 Fill the mold with bitumen until it is more than level full
 When filling the mold, shed the material in a stream
back and forth from end to end of the mold
 Leave the sample cool in room temperature for 30 to 40
minutes and then put it in water bath prepared at a
specific temperature for 30 minutes
 then cut off the excess bitumen with a hot knife or
spatula to make the mold just level full
 Place the brass plate and mold with briquette specimen,
in the water bath for 85 to 95 minutes and keep at the
specified temperature
 Remove the briquette from the plate, remove sidepieces
and test the briquette immediately
 While the test is beginning, make sure that the water in
the tank of the testing machine covers the sample above by
at least 25mm and is prepared continuously with in +0.5C
of specified temperature
 connect rings at each end of the clips to the hooks in the
testing machine and pull the two clips apart horizontally at
a uniform speed as specified until the briquette ruptures
 Measure the distance in centimeters when clips have
been pulled to produce rupture

Calculations and Results:

Ductility value = 12cm

Discussions and Conclusion:
In this test we measure the Ductility of bitumen
and this important to determined the suitability
of bitumen for its use in construction of road, we
choose suitable bitumen depending on its type
and proposed use, if our bitumen have low
ductility value maybe cracked especially when
weather is cold this means when temperature is
low so because of that we choose high Ductility
for hot weather, also high Ductility is required
for high traffic volume (load), The ductility value
gets affected by factors such as temperature,
In our test the value of Ductility was 12cm and
this very low value that’s mean we did something
wrong, frequently it was the temperature of
water the temperature was 18c and specified
temperature is 25c + 0.5 , and may fail by other
reasons like type of bitumen. of course the test is
fail because the value of Ductility should be more
than 100cm according to the specification
