The SRT 1F can provide frequency allocation as follows:

• Alternated operation:
An STM-1 signal is transmitted by an RF frequency using an only polarization. Even
channels and odd channels shall use opposite polarization
• Co-channel operation:
Up to two STM-1 signals can be transmitted simultaneously by an RF frequency
using dual polarization (CCDP), thus doubling the spectrum efficiency. The
transmission capacity of Way side and User channel will be doubled through CCDP
operation.

WARNING
Care vs N+1 with CC reuse!

• When selective fading occurs on one of the used frequencies, both channels V
and H are in outage and they cannot be saved both by the single protection P.
• Note that this impairment is a matter of propagation physics, and cannot be
solved by any type of 3rd party vendor system.
• Example: fading on ch3: W4 and W5 are in outage, but only one can be saved by
P;W4 stays in outage!

• Each filter couples two channels
• The standard RF filters coupling is at 56/80 MHz channel spacing
E.g.: 1-3, 3-5, 5-7, 2-4, 4-6, 6-8
• Other coupling are NON standard, but can be developed on request
E.g.: 1-5 is not standard
• Adjacent channels coupling is NOT available and cannot be developed
E.g. : 1-2 is not possible
• Band Elimination Filter (BEF) may be required in order to guarantee necessary
TX/RX separation between innermost channels, in case they are used inside the
same antenna branching.

2.3 SRT 1F K-shelf MSTU section - Technical Details

Fig. 21 MSTU Section

2.3.1 Transceiver Unit description,(MSTU)

The Transceiver Unit is an all-in-one unit that receives the STM-1 base band (BB)
electrical signals and, after processing, it outputs the converted signals to the
antenna port via RF Branching section at the required Radio Frequency.
All the functions required for the signal processing are enclosed in this unit: it
implements multi-level QAM (64/128) and the corresponding demodulation; it
processes the required SOH bytes and pointers; it converts signals into 1st IF
(70MHz), then (via synthesizer) to RF through 2nd IF (844MHz).
The STM-1 electrical signals are output from the Transceiver to the outside via the
BSW unit inside SCS section for N+1 RPS switchover (bipolar switchover) in the
event of a Transceiver failure.
Moreover, to reduce random errors in transmission paths, the MLCM error correction
method is used.

Hardware and Functionality 

In addition to the main signals, the Transceiver also processes the input and output
signals of the 2x2Mb/s Way Side traffic (one on SOH and one on RFCOH) and of the
user channel using the F1 byte. These signals are accessed through BSW unit in the
same way as the main signals.
The unipolar switch and Space Diversity DADEing functions are implemented in the
unipolar stage to switchover from any of working channel to protection channel
against fading.
The orderwire bytes (E1, E2), DCC, Service Channels, MCF data, and RPS
switchover data are processed in the Supervisory, Control & Switching section.

2.3.1.1 XPIC Module

XPIC module (mounted on Transceiver Unit board) consisting in an adaptive
transversal filter, provides effective countermeasure and superior cancellation
performance also in presence of non-nominal propagation conditions.
Co-channel operation with high level modulation schemes requires very high cross-
polarization discrimination (XPD).
Modern radio relay antennas meet the XPD requirements at least under ideal
propagation conditions; nevertheless cross-polarization interference (XPI) between
orthogonally arranged channels may increase under particular conditions such as
rainfall or multipath propagation. As additional means to counteract these
phenomena, a powerful cross-polarization interference canceller device has been fit
into the demodulator. Since the interference effects are time variable, the XPIC
device structure is adaptive, consisting also of a 11 tap transversal filter.
Due to the chosen XPIC concept no common use or synchronization of the L.O. of
vertical and horizontal channels is required at transmit side.
At receive side, beside the exchange of the received data signals at IF level, the only
interconnection between vertical and horizontal channel is the L.O. synchronization
of the receivers and no additional clock synchronization of the demodulators is
necessary.

2.3.1.2 MSTU Digital Processing

The SRT 1F system uses three kinds of overhead bit to transfer the signals for
system supervise/control and user’s utilization.
In addition to the Multiplex Section Overhead (MSOH) and Regenerator Section
Overhead (RSOH) of STM-1 frame, the Radio Frame Complementary Overhead
(RFCOH) is provided inside the overall radio frame.
If MCF/Controller type TL1/OSI is used, only MS mode is applicable.
If MCF/Controller type SNMP/IP is used, the operational mode can be set as MS
mode or RS mode via LCT.

2.4 SRT 1F K-shelf Supervisory control and switching

Sub-rack -Technical Details

Fig. 33 SCS Section

The SCS section provides supervisory and control function, including alarm/event
information management and provisioning data setting. It consists of the following
units: MCF/Controller, BSW unit and Timing Source Unit (TSU).

• MCF/Controller: it implements the supervisory and control functions for

Transceiver Unit; manages and controls RPS-USW and RPS-BSW; terminates the
E1 and E2 order wire bytes (EOW); terminates the DCC line; sets security levels of
operators; manages bit error performance, analogue monitoring and event
monitoring. It can be chosen TL1/OSI or SNMP/IP. For SNMP/IP type, MST or
RST operational mode can be configured. For TL1/OSI, MST mode is possible
only.

Hardware and Functionality

• BSW: it is the Base Band physical interface for STM-1 signals. It implements a
switchover in the bipolar stage for any of Transceiver failure. The required number
of BSWs is the same as the number of RF working channels. It can be Electrical or
Optical (S-1.1 or L-1.1 via SFP optical module) or GigaEthernet (1000BaseSX or
1000BaseLX or 1000BaseT via SFP module). Also DTI (Double Tributary
Interface) cards are available to provide the tributary protection: BSW Optical 1+1
DTI provides two STM-1 protected by redundancy of SFP module for each STM-1
traffic (is large twice a standard BSW, to have two STM-1 protected in a single
card), the relevant MSP logic being demanded to external ADM. BSW
GigaEthernet 1+1 DTI provides two GigaEthernet interfaces on two SFP modules
for protection of the data via STP (Spanning Tree Protocol) implemented in an L2
switch integrated inside the card.
• TSU: it supplies clock signals for system synchronization in case of MST mode.

• The SCS section can have the following optional units installed:
• up to two Embedded Channel units (ECU) to increase DCC management
capability;
• up to two housekeeping (HK) units to increase supervisory and control capability
of external communication equipment;
• one redundancy TSU;
• one Occasional Interface unit (electrical or optical or GigaEthernet) for occasional
traffic on protection channel; and one BSW INTF for 2x(N+1) single-controller
operation.
• Eow Branching Unit to Allow branching of up to 5 EOW extension
• Aux/lan converter In case of mixed networks osi and snmp

2.4.1 SV Unit
MCF/Controller unit to supervise/control the Radio Protection system. SV card is
available as TL1/OSI protocol stack type or SNMP/IP protocol stack type.
SV card can be provided as single RPS type (RPS1) or double RPS type
(RPS1/RPS2). In this second case, the RPS2 control is demanded to a dedicated
RPS2 sub-unit inside the SV card.
SV card TL1/OSI type supports MST operational mode only (RST mode is not
supported by TL1/OSI SV), so that timing control unit (TCU) shall be equipped as
mandatory item. SV card SNMP/IP type supports both RST and MST modes, so that
TCU is optional item, required only if MST mode is required.
The main function of SV unit is:
• Terminate Orderwires, User Channels and DCCs.
• Provide F-Interface for Local Craft Terminal and Q-Interface for Network
Management System.
• Retrieve/register alarm/status data for protection control and indication.
• Retrieve/register Performance Monitoring data.
• Control the RPS at bipolar and unipolar signal level.
• Control the MSP (for STM-1 MS optical interface only).
• Provide Orderwire functions.
• Register the NE setting (provisioning) data.
• Relay Housekeeping (8DI item input and 4DO item output)

Data Back-up
TL1/OSI type of MCF/Controller card is supplied with a proper EEPROM for back-up
of SV data.
In SNMP/IP type of MCF/Controller card no EEPROM back-up is provided, but full
configuration data can be stored on laptop by proper HOTTOOL software tool.

2.4.1.1 Optional sub-module for RUC (RFCOH User Channel)

SRT1F provides as standard one user channel 64kbps G.703 (using F1 byte of SOH)
per each STM-1 working channel equipped with BSW Electrical or BSW Optical 1+0.
Additionally, up to two optional 64kbps user channels using RFCOH can be added,
by mounting the proper sub-module on the MCF/Controller card. One sub-module is
required per each RUC to be added.

TIP
Note that in case of BSW GigaEthernet and BSW OPT 1+1 DTI, no standard user
channels are available, so the only way to have user channels is to exploit the
optional capability of RFCOH user channels.
The ordering codes of the RFCOH user channel sub-modules are different for the
cases of TL1/OSI controller or SNMP/IP controller.
The equipping rule is:
maximum quantity is two per each MCF/Controller card. Even mixed choice among
the three types is possible (e.g. one RUC DGTL G.703 plus one RUC V.11 in the
same MCF/controller card).

. Further, it is necessary to specify, for each sub-module, if it shall be supplied as

digital (DGTL) or analog (VF). The relevant specifications are indicated in the
following tables.

paragraph can be neglected. If instead the RUC sub-module is ordered later on with
respect of the MCF/Controller, in order to increase the availability of user channels in
the SRT1F terminal, please refer to the following instructions to learn how to mount in
field the RUC sub-module.

Please refer to the following figure.

1. the red circles in the photo show the screws positions of the two locations of the
two RUC sub-modules which can be mounted on a MCF/Controller card (SV
card).
2. the screws are already attached in the SV card.
3. so, first loosen the screws off from the SV card.
4. insert the RUC sub-module (VF or DGTL) on the SV card.
5. then, screw back the screws.

TIP
Please note that the RUC sub-module in the SV card shall be mounted in the same
location (same order) for both the near end SV card and the far end SV card. In fact,
as shown in the figure below, there are two locations for RUC sub-module in the SV
card. Each RUC sub-module can be mounted either in the left side location or in the
right side location, but same location shall be accomplished for both SV cards at both
end terminals of each hop, in order to match consistency of RUC operation. For
instance, in the above figure, two RUC sub-modules are mounted, one DGTL and
one VF. In the remote end terminal, the same equipping scheme shall be
accomplished, with one DGTL RUC and one VF RUC in the same order as the near
end station.

2.4.1.4 Orderwire Function

Two fully independent EOW channels, E1 and E2, are provided.
To use an orderwire, connect an ordinary 2-wire telephone set to E1-2W or E2-2W
modular jack. The station is selectively called through the telephone key-pad by
DTMF method.
Four calling digits are used as follows:
• Two (2) digits for group number (G1, G2)
• Two (2) digits for station number (G3, G4)
When calling, (#,G1,G2,G3,G4) is dialed by push-phone TEL.
Two types of dialing method are available.
• Selective station calling: (#,G1,G2,G3,G4)
• Omnibus broadcast calling: (#,G1,G2, * , * )
4-wire VF in/out ports are available on the SCSU backplane for the connection
to/from other equipment of E1 and E2 EOW.
In case of nodal SRT1F station with more than two SRT1F terminals, the EOW inter-
connection is generally done by acting on co-located MUX settings.
In order to ease the EOW inter-connections in SRT1F nodal stations, a new unit has
been developed and commercially available to allow branching of up to 5 EOW
extensions per terminal, per each EOW channel (E1 and E2).
The ordering code is different depending on the type of controller card equipped,
whether TL1/OSI or SNMP/IP.
One unit allows branching up to 3 EOW extensions per terminal for E1 and E2, while
two units allow branching up to 5 EOW extensions per terminal for E1 and E2
The card is equipped in one of the two slots available adjacently to the SV controller
card slot. If such slots are already used for other optional cards (ECU card, AUX/LAN
card) of course they cannot be used for OWBR. For the case of expansion to 5 EOW
extensions (two OWBR cards needed), of course both slots adjacent to SV controller
card shall be available (not used for other optional cards).

2.4.2 AUX/LAN card

This unit can be plugged in each one of the ECU slot of the SCS section of the
SRT1F (K-shelf or Multi-shelf), in conjunction with MCF/controller SV card TL1/OSI
type (it cannot be plugged in conjunction with MCF/Controller SV card SNMP/IP
type). It provides the conversion of an IP DCN LAN to 1x64kbps or to 1x2Mbps
channel for forwarding via standard user channel (standard F1 SOH byte or optional
RFCOH RUC) or wayside channel (standard SOH WS or standard RFCOH WS) of
SRT1F radio. Even embedded Drop/Insert (D/I) capability is available as 2x64kbps
add/drop and 2x2Mbps add/drop, in order to allow IP DCN LAN drop/insertion in a
user channel or wayside channel in nodal stations where IP DCN LAN drop/insert is
required.

The native application of this unit is to support IP DCN of the new MCF/controller SV
card SNMP/IP in existing SRT1F networks where the MCF/controller SV card is
TL1/OSI type (OSI DCN), as a valuable alternative to IP over OSI tunnelling via Dual
Q-Adapter (which would overload the existing OSI DCN). The choice of the AUX
capacity (64kbps or 2Mbps) depends on the estimated required capacity for the
SRT1F SNMP/IP sub-network DCN to be AUX-converted. At this purpose,
considering that average capacity required by each SRT1F Network Element (NE =
Network Element = MCF/controller) is 4 kbps, it can be assumed that 64kbps AUX
channel is enough for up to 16 NE’s, whilst 2Mbps AUX channel can support even a
full DCCR (192kbps) or DCCM (576kbps) capacity, or even more DCCR’s and/or
DCCM’s (up to maximum limit of 2Mbps), thanks to the drop/insert capability, which
substantially allows to cluster in a single AUX channel all the IP DCN’s relevant to
separate SNMP/IP sub-networks across the TL1/OSI original network
The following figure shows the schematic application.

2.4.3.5 GigaEthernet Interface L2, (ML)

In addition to the GigaEthernet interface L1 (briefly called BSW GE) already available
in SRT1F portfolio, the GigaEthernet interface L2 (Layer-2 = Ethernet switch) is now
added to complete the GE portfolio. The main feature of this new interface is the
presence of dual port GE (for 2+0 or 1+1 DTI configuration) and the ML (Multi-Link)
mapping function on NxSTM-1 capacity, with 1<N<9 (minimum N=2), thus this
interface is briefly called GE ML, to differentiate it from the already available BSW
GE.

The basic functions of the new GE ML are distributed between two main units:

• NXSTM-1 GE ML INTERFACE 2+0/1+1 DTI L2 - MASTER

• NXSTM-1 GE ML INTERFACE 2+0/1+1 DTI L2 - SLAVE

The master unit basically provides the two GE user ports. The slave unit instead
provides the L2-switch function, including the load balancing among the NxVC-4
available capacity.
The minimal set for the GE ML is composed by one master unit and one slave unit
only: with this minimal set of units, the GE interface is mapped on 2xSTM-1 capacity.
For mapping over more than 2xSTM-1, let’s say NxSTM-1 with N>2, it is necessary to
add N-2 dedicated GE ML adapter cards, which can be chosen between following
two codes:
• STM-1 ADAPTER CARD FOR NXSTM-1 GE ML 2+0/1+1 DTI
• STM-1 OCCASIONAL ADAPTER CARD FOR NXSTM-1 GE ML 2+0/1+1 DTI
Between these two units of GE ML adapter cards, the second one (Occasional) is
used to include, among the mapped STM-1’s of the GigaEthernet, the protection
channel of the TDM section of the SRT1F terminal. In particular, in case of a hybrid
terminal with NxSTM-1 TDM protected in N+1 configuration and a GE ML unit to be
mapped over MxSTM-1 independent from the N+1 TDM section, the protection
channel of the N+1 TDM section can be accessed by means of the Occasional
Adapter GE ML, in such a way that the GE ML is actually mapped over M+1 streams
STM-1 in normal conditions (i.e. when protection channel is not needed by TDM
section). Similarly, in case of a hybrid terminal with NxSTM-1 TDM protected in N+2
configuration and a GE ML unit to be mapped over MxSTM-1 independent from the
N+2 TDM section, the two protection channels of the N+2 TDM section can be
accessed by means of qty2 of the Occasional Adapter GE ML, in such a way that the
GE ML is actually mapped over M+2 streams STM-1 in normal conditions (i.e. when
protection channels are not needed by TDM section). In other terms, the protection
channel is shared between the TDM section (for which it is used as Freq Div reserve
channel in case of fading or failure) and the GigaEthernet section (for which it is used
to increase the GE capacity during normal propagation conditions), thus optimizing
the spectral efficiency of the system.

2.4.3.5.1 STM-1 transportability of the GE at repeater sites.

The GE ML shall be equipped only in the two end terminals of a GE chain (i.e. only
where actually GE is needed to interface the Ethernet device located at the end
terminal), whilst in the pure E/W repeater sites, the SRT1F can be equipped with
standard STM-1 BSW and OCC card Electrical (or Optical, if preferred). This
simplifies remarkably the network design and performances, taking the maximum
vantage from the EoS (Ethernet over SDH) mapping, because it makes maximum
use of high reliability and cost-effectiveness of STM-1 Electrical interface, and
minimizes the end-to-end latency in a GE route.

Fig. 51 Mapping of 1 GE via 1x GE ML L2 in a 3-hops SRT1F chain in 4+0 radio configuration

The GigaEthernet L2 unit implements a L2-switch between two GE LAN ports (line
side) and one LAG (Link Aggregation) WAN port (radio side), performing
promiscuous listening on all its ports with store and forward mechanism from port to
port over one 128K packet buffer and CRC parity check to filter (discard) eventual
invalid Ethernet packets.

Hardware and Functionality

The GE ML unit implements as default FIFO priority rule, and its design prevents any
type of Head of Line Blocking (HoLB) problem. Self-learning function with MAC
address table with capacity of 4K entries is also available as default feature (the
default MAC address table administration rule is: oldest MAC records are rewritten
when full). CSMA/CD Backpressure (jam sequence-driven backoff) is implemented
for Half Duplex operation (applicable for 1000BaseT), whilst IEEE 802.3x pause
frames Flow Control is implemented for Full Duplex operation as default feature.
Further, the following Ethernet features can be added by means of SW upgrade via
the dedicated RS232c management port:

• Static MAC address table administration (manual insertion/deletion of static MAC

addresses)
• Intelligent MAC address table administration rule (less used MAC records are
rewritten when full)
• Multicast traffic with IGMP (Internet Group Management Protocol) snooping
• Broadcast and Multicast Storm Protection
Bandwidth profile / rate limiting 64kbps, 128kbps, …, 1Mbps, 2Mbps, … 100Mbps,
per each port and per each packet type (unicast, multicast, broadcast)
• IEEE 802.1p/ ToS/ Port/ MACSA/ MACDA/ ACL/ CoS/ QoS with Strict Priority +
WFQ scheduling
• IEEE 802.1Q VLAN support (VLAN tag, VLAN access links, VLAN trunks, port-
based and MAC-based, up to 4096 VLAN ID)
• IEEE 802.1QinQ handling
• Performance monitoring as per RMON/ GroupMIB (RFC1757, 2819, 2021, 1213,
1573, see Appendix G)
• Port Mirroring
• IEEE 802.1AX (IEEE 802.3ad) Link Aggregation LACP (Trunking, Bonding, NIC
Teaming) at line side
• IEEE 802.1D Spanning Tree Protocol
• IEEE 802.1w Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol

Note that Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) is generally requested in star/spurs
network topology. SRT1F is conceived for chain topology, where RSTP is not
recommended and STP is the best solution to implement protection (see Appendix F
for more details about STP implementation in SRT1F GE ML). Notwithstanding,
RSTP upgradeability is considered also among future candidates according to market
demand (refer to roadmap for commercial availability plan of any Eth features).

Hardware and Functionality 

The unit uses proprietary EoS (Ethernet over SDH) mapping protocol to convert one
or two GigaEthernet data interfaces into one TDM stream NxSTM-1 to be forwarded
on air (1<N<9). On the line side the two available ports can be configured as
separate 2xGE ports (2+0 line side) or as 1+1 DTI line protected by means of line
LAG (Link Aggregation) and STP (Spanning Tree Protocol) functions. On the radio
side the traditional N+1 or N+2 configurations available with SRT1F system are not
applicable, because more conveniently the radio protection scheme is implemented
by making internal protection via adaptive load balancing among the NxVC-4
available.

Basically, the SRT1F equipped with GE ML handles dedicated health check packets,
which provide the information about the faulty status of a VC-4 stream. When a
failure is detected, that VC-4 is not used and the Ethernet traffic is distributed among
the (N-1) available VC-4 streams, until the faulty VC-4 is restored. This concept
strongly improves the spectral efficiency of the system, because instead of having a
standby channel used only in case of failure (which is approximately 1-to-10% of
time), the entire reserved spectrum is used fully in the normal propagation conditions
(which is approximately 90-to-99% of time), and reduced only during the abnormal
condition (failure or fading). This concept is valid not only in case the failure or fading
occurs in the GE ML end terminal, but also in the STM-1 repeaters of a GigaEthernet
chain, as depicted in following picture.

Fig. 53

The design of the EoS mapping protocol for SRT1F has been intentionally chosen
proprietary, in order to optimize the data mapping efficiency and adapt it for the
specific air radio frame designed in SRT1F system, optimizing as consequence
throughput and latency. Proprietary SRT1F EoS mapping efficiency results higher vs
standard GFP, providing faster Link Loss Forwarding (LLF), thus faster switching
time, and high throughput up to 150Mbps/STM-1 and minimum latency of just
23.5microsec/link end-to-end.
Furthermore, the proprietary EoS mapping protocol used in SRT1F implements also
a pseudo-synchronous Ethernet proprietary method to handle the transportation of
synchronization signaling.

Notwithstanding, it shall be noted that the SRT1F GigaEthernet interface is of course

compatible with any Ethernet frame generated by GFP protocol applied by an
external Mux or MW radio device using GFP.

More in general, the SRT1F GigaEthernet interface is transparent to any type of

Ethernet frame, included but not limited to VLAN, MacinMac, QinQ, any type of
MPLS frame and jumbo frames up to 9 Kbytes.

Hardware and Functionality

The proprietary EoS mapping protocol maps the Ethernet traffic coming from the GE
port of each GE ML into NxVC-4, making optimal use of the capacity available for
throughput maximization. Parallel operation of separate and independent Ethernet
flows is thus possible, just considering separate BSW GE (L1) and/or GE ML (L2)
units, each one working upon a separate group of VC-4 containers, similar to VCAT-
like concept used in GFP method. This type of operation also allows easy bandwidth
profile handling (shaping) on NxVC-4 basis, at both line side and radio side, since
each GE unit has got intrinsically rate limiting to Nx150Mbps at both line and radio
side.

Although LCAS concept is not applicable for the GE ML of SRT1F, traffic protection is
anyhow implemented, as described above, at both line side (by means of port
duplication in conjunction with line LAG and STP) and at radio side (by means of
radio LAG with adaptive load balancing driven by health check packets).
Furthermore, the card is of course compatible with any Ethernet frame coming from
an external source implementing LCAS protocol (full interoperability with any
GFP+VCAT+LCAS system is guaranteed).

2.4.3.6 Optical, GE BSW Management

Controls and alarms for both BSW Optical and BSW GE are managed via connection
to SRT1F housekeeping facility.
4 DI plus 2 DO of housekeeping facility are needed per each BSW Optical card.
In case no more than two BSW cards per terminal are equipped, the standard SRT1F
housekeeping facility (providing 8 DI plus 4 DO) is enough to manage BSW.
In case more than two BSW per terminal are equipped, optional HK card (up to two)
can be equipped to increase housekeeping functionalities. In this case, the
connection to HK ports is made via backplane.

2.4.3.7 OCC Interface

• OCC card for occasional traffic on the protection path is available
• Electrical, Optical and GE versions are available
• No wayside channels 2Mbps are available for occasional traffic

2.4.4 TCU unit

Incoming STM-1 Signal (LINE) to TCU, maximum 3 inputs
• From STM-1 tributary input (Tributary side)
• From MSTU receiver output (Radio side)
External Clock Input (EXT) to TCU, maximum 2 inputs
• 2.048 MHz or
• 2.048 Mb/s
It is not possible to set the STM-1 signal coming from protection MSTU receiver
output (Radio side) as synchronization timing clock source. It is not possible to set
STM-1 signal coming from occasional traffic card line input (Tributary side) as
synchronization timing clock source.
Input connectors for external clock are located in the connection area of the SCSU.
In case of signal source input loss the TCU generates the clock signal internally:
• Holdover mode, the system maintains clock accuracy of +/- 0.37 ppm for 24 hours.
After 24 hours, the clock accuracy is +/- 4.6 ppm.
• Internal free-running mode, +/- 4.6 ppm G.813.

2.5 Equipment configuration

2.5.1 Ordering Guide
Assembling an SRT 1F terminal means to select the proper equipment from the
ordering guide. Please contact Nokia Siemens Networks’ Sales and Marketing dept.
for the current ordering guide.
The available configurations can be grouped into 6 classes. The following diagram
shows such classification. The drawings in next pages show ordering guide for each
class.
All the configurations are available at all bands, with or without Space Diversity, with
HP (High Power) or NP (Normal Power) transceivers (where applicable).
The configurations N+0 and 2x(N+0) can be considered as particular cases of the
N+1 and 2x(N+1) reported below.

Hardware and Functionality

All K-shelf configurations with space diversity are available with just RX space
diversity, or with TX+RX space diversity. In case of RX SD, the SD circulator is a
simple RF adaptor (ADPT). In case of TX+RX SD, the SD circulator is a 3-poles RF
low-loss duplexer (DUP), same as TX/RX circulator. The following table clarifies the
use of ADPT and DUP depending on branching configurations:

2.6 Radio protection system

The SRT 1F is equipped with the Radio Protection Switch system (RPS) to improve
signal transmission reliability. Automatic protection switch acts in case of equipment
failure and degradation of the propagation conditions. Manual switching is
implemented for testing and maintenance operation purposes.
One protection channel is provided for each switching group.
• N+1 operation: One switching group (RPS1 = Group 1) having 1:7 protection.
• 2x(N+1) operation: Two independent switching groups (RPS1 = Group 1 and
RPS2 = Group 2) having 1:7 protection each.
Maximum number of main channels is limited by the frequency band being utilized
(maximum 7 main channels per group).
Switching Stages
The Radio Protection System has two switching stages, bipolar switch (BSW) stage
and unipolar switch (USW) stage (.See Fig. 64).

2.6.1 USW
The USW is part of the digital transmit/receive processor (TDP/ RDP) of MSTU. This
switch is supported by manual/automatic DADEing (Differential Automatic time Delay
Equalization) function between protection and any of main channels and performs
the hitless (errorless) switching against propagation fading.
Detailed USW information is as follows:
• Signal level: 8 streams of 19.44 Mbps rate, unipolar stage
• Direction: Uni-directional, Auto revertive
• Initiator: Loss of frame alignment (F LOSS), Signal degrade (BER ALM)

2.6.2 BSW
One BSW unit per main channel is mounted in the SCSU (Supervisory Control &
Switching Unit) section. This switch is not hitless and is dedicated to protect the
system against equipment failure. Manual protection switching is also not hitless but
can safely isolate a specific main channel from traffic transmission, for testing and
troubleshooting purposes.
Detailed BSW information is as follows:
• Signal level: STM-1 CMI, bipolar stage
• Direction: Bi-directional, Auto revertive
• Initiator: MSTU equipment alarm, MSTU power supply failure.

2.6.5 RPS characteristic

Automatic protection of RPS is initiated by;-
• Signal Failure : Frame alignment loss (F LOSS) of the Radio Frame
• Signal Degrade: Bit Error Ratio Alarm (BER ALM) of radio parity before forward
error correction.
Signal Failure (F LOSS alarm)
F LOSS alarm is initiated within 3 msec after frame synchronization loss and
recovered within 3 msec after establishing synchronization.
Signal Degrade
The threshold level of BER ALM can be set through the LCT. Fig. 74 shows the
setting position and time to initiate/recover of BER ALM.
Default setting is “2“.
USW Switching Time
The switching time is the switching total time.
Switching time = t1 + t2 + t3 +t4 (refer to Fig. 75):
• t1 = BER ALM detection time
• t2 = TX parallel transmission request time (propagation time) + TX USW switch
activation time (t2') + TX USW total answer back time (propagation time)
• t3 = Receive USW activation time
• t4 = RX USW total answer back time.
Manual switching time (t3+t4):
• without OCC: less than 5 ms;

Delay time from the detection of BER ALM restoration up to releasing protection
switching is available to eliminate unnecessary RPS operation when the propagation
condition is unstable.
If other channels fail during the WTR period, the WTR will be cancelled immediately
and Prot CH is taken over by the newly failed channel.

2.6.6 Occasional Traffic (option)

The lowest priority traffic can be transmitted by Prot CH when all channels are
normal. If a channel fails, the occasional traffic will be immediately disconnected to
remove traffic from the main failed channel.
Optional OCC card for electrical or optical interface shall be equipped in the first
available BSW slot on the right side.
If all the BSW slots are equipped (7+1) the dedicated OCC card slot shall be used.

2.7 GE Multi-Link Protection Switching Operation

For Gigabit Ethernet (GE) multi-link operation, GE multi-link unit has the unique
function of multiple STM-1 operation to give high throughput and to maintain high
signal transmission quality. Protection switching function is activated for severe
propagation path condition (occurrence of multipath fading) and equipment failure.
Two cases are possible:
• Pure Ethernet link: M+0 GE Multi-Link operation in the absence of any TDM N+1
RPS operation. In this case, M = max 8.
• Hybrid TDM+Ethernet link: M+0 GE Multi-Link operation in the presence of TDM
N+1 RPS operation. In this case, M+N = max 8 and RF channel allocation shall be
done in such a way that N+1 TDM system is allocated among MSTU slots from 1
to N, whilst GE Multi- Link system is allocated from MSTU slot N+1 onwards.
In the provisional setting of “Edit RPS of RUC&RSC&RPS” on WebLT, Max Ch
should be set to N. That means that the N+1 TDM system is protected by standard
RPS (BSW+USW), whilst the GigaEthernet M+0 system is not protected by standard
BSW+USW RPS (OOS condition), but via adaptive load balancing making use of
USW switching criteria only and health check packets.
In case of N+1 RPS without OCC, it is possible to use GE ML ADPT OCC unit in the
OCC slot in order to add occasionally the protection channel of the TDM section as
av occasional VC-4 container for the GigaEthernet section, thus optimizing the
spectral efficiency by synergy between TDM and Ethernet sections transmitted. For
instance, take the hybrid operation of 3+1 SDH without OCC and 5+0 GE Multi-Link
operation implemented with 1xGE MLM, 1xGE MLS, 2xGE ML ADPT and 1xGE ML
ADPT OCC: all this configuration can be achieved by using just 8 MSTU’s in the
same rack; when the protection channel is occupied by other STM-1 channel on fade,
total GE Multi-Link capacity will drop down from 5xSTM-1 to 4xSTM-1 automatically
as per OCC functionality.
• In the M+0 GE Multi-Link operation, GE MLS unit has a switching control function
of switch-off and switch-back from M working channels independently N+1 RPS.
When any of working channel quality degrades below the threshold level, GE MLS
unit switch off the degraded working channel and after switch back again when the
quality becomes normal

2.10.1.1 Synchronization mode

SRT1F TCU has got two synchronization modes. In the following description,
Synchronous Source Unit (SSU) is defined as high quality reference clock source
equipment to generate and regenerate the primary/secondary clock signal of the
network in accordance with ITU-T Rec. G.813.
In the MODE 1, the system receives the reference clock source from other equipment
through the STM-1 signal input (LINE) or EXT CLK input connectors (EXT), and there
is not any reference signal output to SSU.
In the MODE 2, the clock selection is made in two separate steps, and involves
regeneration of the synchronization signal through the SSU (T4).

performances also in critical synchronization environment,(Fig. 81) where the
synchronization network is not protected against synchronization failures. This new
type of RST mode (RST type 2) is configured by equipping the following optional sub-
module on the MCF/Controller card SNMP/IP:

Hardware and Functionality

Summarizing, the synchronization mode for SRT1F with SNMP/IP controller can be:
Operation Mode for SRT1F Need of TSU Need of RS sub-
SNMP/IP module
MST YES NO
RST type 1 (typical) NO NO
RST type 2 (enhanced) NO YES

WARNING
To avoid misunderstanding, the following table is valid instead for SRT1F with
TL1/OSI controller:
Need of TSU Need of RS sub-
module

MST YES NOT APPLICABLE

2.10.3.2 Applicability
The applicability of RS sub-module has got some limitations:
• Applicable to controller cards SNMP/IP having dedicated card rev number only.
• Applicable to minimal configuration 2+1 or 2+0 with W1 and W2 slots equipped.
• Not applicable to TL1/OSI controller cards.
• Not applicable to 1+1, 1+0, nor 2+0 equipped as 1+1 with OCC card and disabled
RSC.

2.10.3.3 Functional Description of RST mode type 2

When RS sub-module is equipped and RS mode type 2 is selected via Web LT, basic
transmission functional signals such as DCCR, RSC, E1 are duplicated onto the
RFCOH 2Mbps Wayside channel, instead of usual STM-1 frame, and protected by
1:1 redundancy (RFCOH WS of W1 and W2 are used), thus providing better
robustness against synchronization impairments, than the standard RST mode type
1.
As a consequence:
• 2Mbps Wayside channels on the RFCOH are not available for user. Instead,
2Mbps Wayside channels over SOH are still available for customer use.
• Both RSC-X and RSC-Y (Radio Service Channel, main and protection) cannot be
selected via Web LT which STM-1 to use among P-W7, since its belonging STM-1
frame depends on the selected RFCOH wayside channel.

Hardware and Functionality 

• E1 radio side cannot be selected via Web LT which STM-1 to use among P-W7,
since its belonging STM-1 frame depends on the selected RFCOH wayside
channel.
• E1 connection among co-located SRT1F terminals line side shall be done via
dedicated 4-wire connections using subD connectors available on backplane, and
cannot be done via tributary connection.
• DCCR connection among co-located SRT1F terminals line side shall be done via
dedicated connections using LAN connectors (Q-interface) available on
MCF/Controller unit, and cannot be done via tributary connection.

The following table summarizes the above mentioned limitations:

The ATT switches on the card are used to modify the voltage attenuation for each
available input and output of E1 and E2 channels independently. The following table
shows the relation between the ATT switches name/position and the E1/E2
inputs/outputs.
For each ATT switch, the voltage attenuation can be chosen independently by acting
on the switch position of the 5 digit (1,2,4,8,16) block of ATT switch. The factory
default position of these digits is indicated on the card layout picture shown above,
which corresponds to 12 dB attenuation for each Input and 11 dB attenuation for
each Output (in/out resulting level: -4dBm).

5.1 MSTU and Other Units

5.1.1 MSTU
To replace an MSTU, the traffic should be switched over to the protection channel by
forcing the BSW in advance, and by cutting off power to the unit. The BSW operation
momentarily interrupts traffic.

5.1.2 OPT INTF of BBIU shelf

The traffic cannot be protected during the replacement work, unless the
line (facility) is protected by MSP (for OPT INTF - X/Y only).

5.1.3 Units in SCSU

Replacement of any unit other than that listed below may seriously affect traffic:
• TCU in stand-by (in case of card protection of TCU-X/Y).
• HK unit.
NOTE: System setting data for each unit is registered in the SV unit of SCSU.
When a unit is replaced with spares, the system setting data will be
automatically transferred from the SV unit. There is no setting change after unit
replacement.

6.3 SV SNMP Unit Protocol overview

SRT 1F uses two (2) type of application layer protocol. HTTP on TCP/IP is used for a
web based connection between the built in web server and a client PC. SNMP on
UDP/IP is used for connection between the embedded SNMP agent and SNMP
managers.

Fig. 132

Two (2) types of connection, HTTP on TCP/IP and SNMP on UDP/IP same as
Ethernet LAN connection are also used on DCC connection carried by STM1 SOH.

Hardware and Functionality

The LAN connection port on the equipment is designed based on IEEE

Recommendations.
The LAN port supports both connection speed of 10Base-T and 100Base-TX.
Connection speed is automatically detected and negotiated with a connected
equipment. For a physical cable connection to an external LAN equipment, straight
and cross cable can be use without care. SRT 1F automatically detects the plugged
cable type.
