FROM THE DESK OF THE SUPERINTENDENT What Your Score Means

Dear Community Members:
Happy New Year! January is traditionally a time when we look ahead to the
possibilities of the future, and resolve to create the best one that we can. As educators,
we do the same. However, in the words of Yogi Berra, “The future ain’t what it used to
be”. I came across this quote while rereading Catching Up or Leading the Way: American
Education in the Age of Globalization, a book that discusses how the future our students
face will present new challenges. Perhaps the most significant difference in this future is
the expansion of the “virtual world”, and the fact that our children are “digital natives” for
whom the use of new technologies is second nature. It also reminds us of the
importance of providing our students with an education that will enable them to be
citizens of the world, and give them the ability to thrive in a world where change is a
constant, and opportunities are endless. If we are to fulfill that responsibility, we must
commit to changing the way in which we teach our children. In order to develop the
digital and technological competencies our students need, we need to recognize and
respect the fact that today’s students approach learning in a new way.
As a district, we are making a commitment to strengthen our use of technology as
an instructional tool. We know that student engagement is a critical component of
learning, and we know that students learn in different ways. By incorporating technology
in meaningful ways, we can effectively address those needs. Last fall we hosted a day of
professional development so teachers could learn more about the use of different
technologies that could enhance their instruction. We are continuing that effort by
forming Technology Committees in both the Richburg and Bolivar buildings. The purpose
of these groups is to gather input that we will use in designing and budgeting for an
instructional technology plan that will improve our educational program by increasing our
students’ engagement in learning and providing them with the necessary skills to use
technology and digital media as a means of promoting their own learning. This is another
way in which we are working to support our goal of increasing student achievement.
As I mentioned in last month’s newsletter, we are working to create our budget for
next year, and, as it was last year, the process will be a challenging one. The Governor
has not yet provided any specific information to us about his plan for supporting
education, but we expect his budget proposal in early February. In the meantime, we are
examining our resources, determining our needs, and planning our expenditures based
upon our vision of providing an outstanding education for our students.

What Kind of Student Are You?
The start of a new year is a time when people often find themselves making
pledges of good intentions they intend to keep during the upcoming year. With that being
said, now is a perfect time for students to either rededicate themselves to their academic
endeavors, or for struggling students to commit to academic improvement. As a parent, I
encourage you to take a moment and have your child fill out the following survey, and
then use the results to foster a discussion about their schooling.

20-15 points: You are a very good student. Continue what you are doing.
14-10 points: You are a student who could be getting better grades. Focus on the
areas where you responded either sometimes or never. Improvement
in these areas will result in even better academic performance.
9-5 points: You’re probably not getting very good grades. You need to rededicate
yourself to your academics. Organization, such as setting aside time
for studying and completion of homework should be a primary focus.
4-0 points: Your grades need serious improvement. Ask for help. Speak with your
teachers and counselor to figure out a plan of action. Recognize that
success will not be achieved overnight, but if you seek out assistance
and commit to improving as a student, the benefits will become
apparent.
Regardless of how you scored on this survey, or how you are currently performing as a
student, there is always hope and room for improvement. Here is to wishing you the
fortitude to strive for academic excellence. It will not come easily, however the rewards
for your dedication and hard work will benefit you for a lifetime.

I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday, and I wish everyone a very happy and
healthy 2011.
There will be a very special event taking place in the elementary gym on Friday
January 21st from 6:30 – 8:30. The “Community Dance” has once again been organized
by Miss Rachel Bell, our elementary music teacher. If you attended last year’s event,
you already know it is lots of fun for the entire family. All family and community members
are invited to attend free of charge. Bob Nicholson, from Syracuse, NY, will be here
teaching various dances making it easy and fun for all age levels. The band
“Tunescape” will also be here to offer their high-energy Celtic-style music. So come on
out for a night of activity and entertainment.
With New York State being one of the Race To The Top states, that means there will
be many changes coming for education, both in the short term and long term. Everyone
involved in education, including teachers, students, parents, administrators, and
community members, will need to realize that the way we once did business will be
forever changed. The state is planning to start rolling out some of the changes this
month and school districts will be expected to make adjustments as those changes
occur.
There will be no school on Monday, January 17th in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.
We are quickly approaching the mid-year point and the issuing of report cards. If
you have any concerns about your child’s progress, please do not hesitate to contact
their teachers and set up a conference time with them.

SCIENCE HAPPENINGS...
Happy New Year! In Earth science class we are officially starting our units that
relate to the study of the universe. We’ll begin with basic motion of objects in space. In
our books, chapters 10 and 11 pertain to astronomy. Hopefully we’ll get a few good

nights this month for observing the night sky. The Quadrantids Meteor Shower officially
starts tomorrow night, but you will likely see meteors through January 5th. You’ll want to
look at the constellation of Bootes. Trouble locating constellations? Download a free
shareware called Stellarium (a simple Google search will get you to the company’s

It is PROJECT TIME for Living Environment students! Students are working on a
biotechnology newspaper, headlining current issues in genetic engineering, cloning, and
stem cells. This will lead us into a new topic of evolution and our scientist projects. Not

only will we be working on our scientific knowledge, but we will be exploring the lives of
important scientists and their contributions to current biology. Students should be
keeping on top of their labs and homework....the year is flying by!

The Library Media Center was busy in the month of December with many classes in
doing research. Ms. Henneman’s Parenting classes were in researching disabilities and
how they affect children and teens for oral presentations in January. Mrs. Minnemeyer’s
Literacy students were using the books and web sites to research endangered animals
for the books that they are writing. Mrs. Lasnick’s Spanish 8 students used online
magazines and web sites to explore how Feliz Navidad is celebrated in Hispanic
Countries the information was going to be shared at a Navidad Fair. Mrs. Donahue’s
English 11 students researched writers of the American romantic period for presentations
in class.
A SEASON OF LEARNING AND EMERGING LEADERSHIP
Girls Soccer 2010 Recap

It is a matter of perspective, isn’t it? How you look at a season gone by. For me,
this season sort of brought to mind the Buffalo Bills season of 1986. That was the year
that Jim Kelly first played for the Bills. Although the Bills didn’t win as many games as we
would have liked that season, you could see, or maybe sort of sense, a difference
coming in the future. That sums up the way I felt about this season. To borrow a line
from a song of that era, “Our futures so bright, you have to wear shades.”
When we entered this season we knew we had some big challenges to overcome.
Twelve seniors gone to graduation, a jump up to the super competitive “C” Sectional
Class, and few players with varsity playing experience. When we got word that two of
our three seniors (Alyssa and Hannah) wouldn’t be with us at the beginning of the
season due to illness and injury, things looked even darker. Still the way the girls
learned and absorbed what I was teaching this season, gives me a great feeling about
things to come. Although we didn’t win as many as we would have liked this season, we
progressed; maybe more than any other team I have ever coached. The girls just
seemed to “get it” as we went. That is why I really didn’t want the season to end. The
girls kept progressing. In addition, I saw a few girls, girls that never had to lead before,
step up and lead the way. They became leaders right before my eyes and that is a really
neat thing to see! As a teacher, there are few things in your career that top the way you
feel when students learn. You can see it in their eyes, when they “get” something you
have been teaching them and they put “it” into practice. What a great season it was for
that. I really can’t wait to see what these kids can do in the future. To our graduating
seniors, Hannah, Alyssa, and Shauna, thanks for your hard work over the past few
years, and best of luck in the future!
GREETINGS FROM THE ORCHESTRA PROGRAM!
The concert season has finally wound down and hopefully you had a chance to
attend some of the wonderful presentations in our schools. The children worked very
hard to bring you festive music for your listening enjoyment. Congratulations on all their
hard work- I am very proud.
The string students have been preparing their solos for Solofest and you should be
hearing your cherubs practicing like mad. In addition to the solo, the students must
perform scales from memory and a short sight-reading excerpt. These are required
performances in order to attend the Houghton String Festival.
This year the ACSMA Solofest is on Saturday, February 12th in Fillmore. As we
approach the date, you will receive more information regarding bus times, etc.

RACHEL’S CHALLENGE CLUB OFF TO GOOD START
December was a very busy month with the arrival of Rachel’s Challenge. Our club
has had an amazing turn out with students across the grade levels willing to help make a
difference in our school and community. With over 60 students in attendance at our
weekly meetings we are off to a great start! During the month of December our F.O.R
club (friends of Rachel’s) was able to participate in several activities to help carry out the
positive message from the assembly at the beginning of the month.
The club is concentrating on carrying out the five challenges that Rachel Scott left
her audience:
Students who accepted Rachel’s Challenge were each given a candy cane with the
above card attached to it to remind them of the challenges they accepted.
On December 21st club members participated in Christmas caroling around the
village of Bolivar. Members braved the cold weather to help spread some Christmas
cheer to our community members! After caroling members and advisors gathered in the
school cafeteria for hot chocolate and cookies.
The F.O.R. club also put on a food drive December 20th-22nd to help raise food
items for our local food pantry. The food drive was called “Food Wars” and all grades
6th-12th participated in a competition to see which grade level could raise the most food
items. At the end of the short week we raised 250 food items to be donated through the
holiday season. Eighth grade took the lead with sixth and ninth grade following close
behind! Great job Bolivar-Richburg students and staff!
January is shaping up to be another busy month for our club members. This month
we will be concentrating on our “Hall of Fame” where students and teachers will be
recognized for acts of kindness. It is our goal to have the hall filled with acts of kindness
by the end of the school year!

ELEMENTARY PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Miss Lawton & Mr. Zilker
Happy New Year!!! I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday. Before we left
for break, Mr. Zilker and I designed a scooter unit for kindergarten through second grade
to teach our youngsters about upper body muscles. The children built up their upper
body strength and endurance by using scooters to play various games where students
used a scooter to move themselves around the gym to perform a task. For example, they
acted as alligators and scorpions to get food, as well as using the scooters as
ambulances to help one another out. We discussed what types of muscles we have in
our arms and where they are located. So don’t be afraid to “quiz” your son or daughter
about their arm muscles.
The third through fifth grade girls are currently working on their basketball skills. We
have been practicing dribbling, shooting, and passing skills, as well as a few tricks with
the basketballs. This week 4th and 5th graders will begin playing mini basketball games
to apply their newly acquired skills and work as a team. The 3rd graders will continue to
practice basketball skills and play lead up basketball games to further their development.
To kick off the new year, K-2 will begin exploring with balloons and paddles to work
on developing their hand eye coordination as well as working with partners. The 3rd -
5th grade girls will begin using their hockey skills in the floor hockey unit. This unit will
challenge each student to practice hand eye coordination as well as working as a team
to achieve a common goal.
The boys in grades 3-5 will be starting basketball as our next unit. The game of
basketball is a great way to develop cardiovascular and muscular fitness as well as
teamwork. The boys will be learning some key skills that they will need, and then we will
be moving on to some fun lead-up games. Eventually, I would like to play a game of
basketball.
We encourage all parents to inquire on their child’s level of interest about the
game of basketball because on Saturday mornings in Bolivar, a program
called Saturday Morning Basketball takes place. If your child is
interested in learning even more about the game, they can do so
on Saturday mornings; 3rd and 4th graders 8-9:30 and 5th and 6th
graders 9:30-11:00.

Our theme for January is “how people, plants, and animals change.” The students
will be working on activities that help them learn about life cycles, friendships, from
seeds to plants, and chameleons. We have read the stories: See How We Grow,
Farfallina and Marcel, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, From Seed to Plant, The Tiny Seed,
Seeds, The Mixed-Up Chameleon, Hide Clyde and so many more. The students worked
on compare and contrast, plot, and cause and effect along with the stories in reading.
We also have more new letters to use in blending words. The new letters are Rr, Dd, Kk,
and Oo.
This past month the children have been working as hard as they can. They have
accomplished so much. These children have really started the new year off on the right
foot! Please continue working on blending and sight words with your child at home. The
kindergarten teachers want to thank all of our parents for helping with our Gingerbread
Men unit. All of the Gingerbread Men looked amazing. The students had a great time
working with the different Gingerbread stories. Thank you once again for all of your help!
The kindergarten teachers would also like to wish a happy January birthday to Trey
Taylor and Gavan Dickerson on the 5th, Evan Pinney on the 8th, Alexis Learn on the
10th, Samantha Bucher on the 19th, Trent Sibble on the 20th, and Hunter Walp on the

It’s no secret. When
people get into financial
trouble, they often turn to
their families for help. It is
much easier to get a loan
from someone you know
and love than from a bank.
While occasional family
loans are fine, frequent
ones can lead to big trouble,
for everyone involved.
Financial experts generally
advise families not to loan
money to each other. This is
often easier said than done,
however. If you have been
asked for a loan recently,
proceed with caution and
follow these tips.
Find out what the loan
is for. You don’t want to lend
a relative a large sum of
money, only to discover they
paid off a small debt and
spent the rest on the
vacation of a lifetime. Make
certain the loan will be put
to good use, whether to pay
down debt, finish a degree,
start a business or for some
other reason.
Determine how much
you can afford to give.
Review your finances to see
how much you can
realistically lend. If you
cannot give any, be honest
and offer to help out your
relative in some other way.
Perhaps you could watch
their children while they
work part time in the
evenings. Do not go to
extreme measures to find
the money or overextend
yourself. Give what you can,
and if it isn’t enough, so be
it. There’s always a chance
you will not be repaid and
you don’t want to put
yourself into jeopardy.
Draw up a contract for
the loan to be repaid. Don’t
throw caution to the wind
and tell your relative to pay
you back whenever.
Chances are they won’t.
You’re loaning them your
hard-earned money, so
arrange for it to be repaid in
a timely fashion, perhaps
even with interest.
Depending upon the terms
of the loan and how you go
about it, there might be
some tax implications.
Speak to a tax professional
to ensure the right contract
between parties. For the
best results, you might want
to have a third party draw
up the contract and arrange

Following last week’s tax
law changes, the Internal
Revenue Service
announced today the
upcoming tax season will
start on time for most
people, but taxpayers
affected by three recently
reinstated deductions need
to wait until mid- to late
February to file their
individual tax returns. In
addition, taxpayers who
itemize deductions on Form
1040 Schedule A will need
to wait until mid- to late
February to file as well.
The start of the 2011
filing season will begin in
January for the majority of
taxpayers. However, last
week’s changes in the law
mean that the IRS will need
to reprogram its processing
systems for three provisions
that were extended in the
Tax Relief, Unemployment
Insurance Reauthorization
and Job Creation Act of
2010 that became law on
Dec. 17.
People claiming any of
these three items —
involving the state and local
sales tax deduction, higher
education tuition and fees
deduction and educator
expenses deduction as well
as those taxpayers who
itemize deductions on Form
1040 Schedule A — will
need to wait to file their tax
returns until tax processing
systems are ready, which
the IRS estimates will be in
mid- to late February.
“The majority of
taxpayers will be able to fill
out their tax returns and file
them as they normally do,”
said IRS Commissioner
Doug Shulman. “We will do
everything we can to
minimize the impact of
recent tax law changes on
other taxpayers. The IRS
will work through the
holidays and into the New
Year to get our systems
reprogrammed and ensure
taxpayers have a smooth
tax season.”
The IRS will announce a
specific date in the near
future when it can start
processing tax returns
impacted by the late tax law
changes. In the interim,
people in the affected
categories can start working
on their tax returns, but they
should not submit their
returns until IRS systems
are ready to process the
new tax law changes.
The IRS urged
taxpayers to use e-file
instead of paper tax forms
to minimize confusion over
the recent tax changes and
ensure accurate tax returns.
Taxpayers will need to
wait to file if they are within
any of the following three
categories:
* Taxpayers claiming
itemized deductions on
Schedule A. Itemized
deductions include mort-
gage interest, charitable
deductions, medical and
dental expenses as well as
state and local taxes. In
addition, itemized deduct-
ions include the state and
local general sales tax
deduction extended in the
Tax Relief, Unemployment
Insurance Reauthorization,
and Job Creation Act of
2010 enacted Dec. 17,
which primarily benefits
people living in areas
without state and local
income taxes and is claimed
on Schedule A, Line 5.
Because of late Con-
gressional action to enact
tax law changes, anyone
who itemizes and files a
Schedule A will need to wait
to file until mid- to late
February.
* Taxpayers claiming the
Higher Education Tuition
and Fees Deduction. This
deduction for parents and
students — covering up to
$4,000 of tuition and fees
paid to a post-secondary
institution — is claimed on
Form 8917. However, the
IRS emphasized that there
will be no delays for millions
of parents and students who
claim other education
credits, including the
American Opportunity Tax
Credit and Lifetime Learning
Credit.
* Taxpayers claiming the
Educator Expense
Deduction. This deduction is
for kindergarten through
grade 12 educators with
out-of-pocket classroom
expenses of up to $250. The
educator expense deduction
is claimed on Form 1040,
Line 23, and Form 1040A,
Line 16.
