Fore peak and aft peak tanks


• Forward pump room contains the ballast pump for
ballasting the fore peak tank
• Ballast pump located in the engine room is usually used
for ballasting and deballasting the aft peak tank.
• Peak tanks are never used for the carriage of oil.

Fuel oil tanks


• Fuel oil on a tanker is usually carried in forward and aft
Deep tanks.
• Forward pump room contains the fuel transfer pump for
servicing the forward deep tank.
• Fuel transfer pump located in the engine room is usually
used for servicing the aft Deep tank.

Cofferdams
• This is the name given to an empty compartment usually
located between double transverse bulkheads.
• A cofferdam is fitted at each end of the cargo area.
• Cofferdams may also be found between sections of the
cargo oil / ballast spaces.

Cargo tanks
• The cargo tanks are located between the Fore
peak tank and the main pump room aft.
• The ships hull is sub-divided into tanks by
longitudinal and transverse oil tight bulkheads

Cargo tanks (continued)


• The cargo tank openings are provided with oil tight closing
appliances.
• Liquid cargo is loaded into the cargo tanks through
permanently installed pipelines.
• Cargo tanks are coated with a special quality of paint
which will not react with the cargo carried.

arrangement to heat viscous cargoes.

Pump rooms

• The cargo pump room of an oil tanker is the nerve center


of the cargo system of the ship.
• The main pump room is located at the aft end of the
cargo tank area.

Pump rooms (Contnued)

• The cargo pipelines from the cargo tanks lead to the


cargo oil pumps located in the pump rooms.
• The pump room is the most potentially hazardous space
on board an oil tanker.

Pump rooms (Contnued)

• This is the only compartment frequented by personnel into


which oil cargo enters.
• If due to any malfunction or breakdown of pump, pipe
lines or valves, leakage of oil or gas occurs, the personnel
within are immediately at risk.

• The pump room is provided with an efficient forced


ventilation system which is kept operating prior and during
cargo or ballast related operations.
• The pump rooms are constructed in a similar manner as oil
tight tanks.

Segregated ballast tanks

• Tankers are required to be fitted with Segregated ballast


tanks (SBT)
• These tanks are connected to a completely separate
system of pumps and pipelines for clean ballast only.

Segregated ballast tanks (Continued)

• Newly built tankers are required to be of double hull


construction.
• The double bottom and wing tanks of the double hull are
used solely for the carriage of clean ballast.
