These devices, however, need tracking soas to focus Sun rays on toa receiver althe time. They canals tap only direct hormal radiation and not the diffuse. CST systems are useful for medium and high temperatures required for various applications in industries, commercial establishments &insttutions, ‘There are various CST technologies, namely, Fixed Focus Elliptical Dish (Scheffler) for applications with temperatures up to 150°C + ParaboticTrough Concentrator PTC) for temperatures up to 250°C Fresnel Reflector Based Dish for temperatures up to 350°C Paraboloid Dish for temperatures up to 350°C Linear Fresnel Reflector Concentrator (LFRC) for temperatures up to 250°C @ Non-Imaging Concentrator (NIC) for temperatures up to 120°C Non-Imaging Concentrators (NIC) are also called Compound Parabolic Collectors (CPC). The NIC consists ofa specially ‘coated absorber tube that is enclosed in a concentric glass, cover to reduce convection losses. The annulus between the ‘tube and its cover is evacuated. The tubes placed at the focal plane of two reflectors shaped as parabolic troughs. The axes of the two parabolas are inclined at the acceptance angle which is the angle by which direct light may deviate from the normal and yet allow the reflected light to reach the receiver.a high acceptance angle requires fewer tracking adjustments, Usually such concentrators are made as panels from 1 to.6 m wide and could have up to 60 m of collector area. The receiver ‘carries the fluid to be heated which could be water or a thermic fluid, and are connected to each receiver tube by means of a header. The most common method of NIC panel mounting is in the E-W direction with the panel facing South inclined from the ground at an inclination angle of latitude Technology angle + 10°. ‘Schematic representation of Non - Imaging Concentrator ona Tar themic Fall) ppteton Vateris Applications NIC systems can generate pressurised hot water or hot thermic fluid as required by the process and are generally attractive forthe fllowing appliatio Appl a Educational/ Religious Institutions Cooking (other than chapattis and for frying) Hotels, Hospitals, Offices, Shopping Malls| Air-conditioning, Hot water for Bathing, Laundry Eley Engineering/ Automobile Industry Component Washing, De-greasing, Metal Treatment Bath Heating, Paint Drying Chemical Process Industry Boiler feed-water heating, other heating operations where the process temperature is less than 120°C Cer omens Feed Water Preheating = MTC Ltd,Tobacco Factory, Bangalore ~The system is integrated with a process heat recovery system and is used to pre-heat boiler feed-water. Cee) Key Features ‘© NICisa proven technology though there ate a few working installations in india ‘© NICs do not have rotating or flexible joints for water and steam, and therefore leakages are avoided, ‘© NICs can be installed on rooftops of existing bui ings. ‘# NICs have low concentration ratios and therefore its operating temperature is limited to 120°C. ra Reflector ¢ NICs have ne moving parts. emi MOO ner ee ON ew ROL) ooreuictas Operation and Maintenance © Good water treatment or softening of the feed water through commercially available systems is important for high efficiency and long lf ofthe receiver. ® Itis important to keep the reflectors clean to obtain high efficiencies, Investment Required NIC systems typically cost around & 16000/m’ and auxiliary systems such as the water treatment and storage system, piping, insulation etc. may cost an additional 15 to 30%. The investment to save a unit of electricity/ year is € 50 tof 65; to save 1 litre of HSD/ year is € 500 to € 650 and 1 cylinder of LPG/ year is € 9000 to T 12000. For example, to save 1000 kWh (units) of electricity in a year, one would have to invest between & 50,000 and % 65,000 depending upon the location, application etc. Typical Output at Selected Locations Lowlll Medium lll High reer ae ae ea ge ee eg (Cenc Madurai Tt Bangalore Hyderabad Ranchi |_| Bhopal/ Ahmedabad Taipur Leh Pune New Delhi “Anal average up equvlent to sturaed steam kya 120° Manufacturers & Suppliers ‘There are presently two manufacturers of NIC based systems in the country. The list of manufacturers and suppliers along with the minimum technical specifications required for such systems is available at the MNRE (Ministry of New & Renewable Energy) website wwwmnce goxin POU rasan’ For installation of CST based systems, MNRE provides a capital subsidy of 30% of the capital cost subject to a maximum ‘of € 3600/m’ for Non-imaging concentrators, 5400/m’ for concentrators with one-axis tracking & of & 6000/m’for ‘concentrators with two-axis tracking regardless of the nature or size of the system. For the hilly areas and sp ‘category states, the capital subsidy is 60%. Inaddition, commercial organizations may avail of accelerated depreciation benefit. ‘An additional support of 10% of cost subject to a maximum of € 15 lakhs for demonstration projects and & 4 lakhs for teplication projects with a minimum CST area of 250m’ also available for certain activities under the UNDP-GEF project being implemented by the MNRE. foretd For more details of manufacturers/suppliers, government support, applications, technologies and successful installations please visit: www.mnre.gov.in OR www.st OR www.insolthermtimes.in OR contact National Project Manager, ‘Concentrated Solar Heat Project, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Block 14,CGO Complex, Lodi Road, Perea ETE ene eo nec Toll Free Helpline No, 1800 2 33 44 77 could be accessed Monday through Friday betw POE aEUE EL SCE Ener @ COAX IS Prepared forthe Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India, under the UNDP-GEF project on Soap“ vrs Concentrated Solar Heat by Ecos Systems Pvt.Ltd, Pune ~ 411 045 website: www.ecoaxisindia.com
