The learner factors completely different types of polynomials (polynomials
with common monomial factor, difference of two squares, sum and difference of two
cubes, perfect square trinomial, and general trinomials). M8AL-Ia-b-1
To The Learners :
Before starting the module, I want you to set aside other tasks that will disturb
you while enjoying the lessons. Read the simple instructions below to
successfully enjoy the objectives of this kit. Have fun!
1. Follow carefully all the contents and instructions indicated in every page of
this module.
2. Write on your notebook the concepts about the lessons. Writing enhances
learning, that is important to develop and keep in mind.
3. Perform all the provided activities in the module.
4. Let your facilitator/guardian assess your answers using the answer key card.
5. Analyze conceptually the posttest and apply what you have learned.
6. Enjoy studying!
Expectations
This module was designed to help you master on how to factor polynomials using
the different types of factoring such as Common Monomial Factor, Difference of
Two Squares, Sum and Difference of Two Cubes, Perfect Square Trinomial,
Factoring by Grouping and other types of factoring .

Looking Back to your Lesson
From your previous lesson, you have learned that there are certain cases of
products of polynomials which have been classified because of the special forms of
the factors. These products can be obtained easily by applying the Special Product
Formulas. The formulas are also called “special” because we need not proceed to
the distributive property in obtaining the products. Table 1 shows the different
types of special product formulas.

Introduction of the Topic
Lesson 1 :Factoring
Factoring Defined
Factoring reverses the multiplication process. In factoring polynomials, we shall be
adopting the reverse process of the special product formulas.
Types of Factoring
1. Type 1. Common Monomial Factor
Basically, factoring the polynomial using the common monomial factor can be
illustrated as :
ax +ay =a(x + y )
ax+ ay ax ay
Thus, = + =x+ y
a a a
18 a3 b4 w 2 2 −12 ab2
2
=3 a b w ; =−2
6 ab 6 ab2

Thus, 18 a3 b 4 w−12 ab 2=¿ 6 ab 2( 3 a2 b 2 w−2)
35 x 5 b3 21 x 2 b7 14 x6 b 9 3 4 4 6

− 2 3
− 2 3
=5 x −3 b −2 x b
7x b 7x b 7x b

− = − =5 a −14 a

Remember
The following are the different types of Factoring. The technique in finding the
factors of each type is shown below :
ax +ay =a(x + y )
x 2− y 2=( x + y ) ( x− y )
x 3+ y 3=( x + y ) ( x 2−xy + y2 )
x 3− y 3= ( x− y ) ( x 2 + xy + y 2 )

4. Perfect Square Trinomial
2 2 2
x + 2 xy + y = ( x + y )
5. Other Trinomials
x 2+ ( a+b ) x +ab=( x+ a ) ( x +b )
