Design Brief – Semester September 2016 – January 2017

PROJECT 3 (FINAL PROJECT)

KING’S DEN (individual, 7 weeks, 50%)
Understanding anthropometric & ergonomic, scale & proportion, site & cultural context,
space functionality and spatial organization

Outcome
 Apply the basic vocabulary and elements of design by
translating and transforming into functional elements and
forms of creative designs.
 Design appropriate architectural schemes that reflect your
knowledge of the vocabulary and terminologies of the
theory of proportions and organization of functional space.
 Apply simple detailing that reflect your understanding on
material and construction.
 Apply passive design strategies that reflect your
understanding on passive design.

A King who has just escaped from capture is on the runaway

with you, his most trusted General. Forced to adapt to live
with nature, they badly need a place where they can stay
while working on a plan of their next move.

Your task is to design and produce a single multi-functional

space of a hideout for the runaway King that fits 2 persons.
The maximum allowable floor area is 30 m2 with emphasize in
passive design strategies, tropical regionalism and timber
construction. The functional requirements are somehow differ
depending on your creativity in translating and transforming
the needs. Essential activities are food preparation, resting
and sleeping, self cleansing to some appropriate extent and
task performing. Your design has to incorporate a ‘life-made-
easy’ cubicle from the previous project.

Understanding on human dimension, man as unit of measurement, ergonomics, natural

elements and spatial organization & functionality are of main importance. Adaptation, sense
and spirit of place are to be counted in without harming the context and respect to the nature.
