While the Spanish decided to take over Philippines, there were already American people who decided to
stay within and even after independence, there were those who continued and chose to remain while
maintaining connections to those from their own country. The American colonization in the Philippines
lasted a good 48 years, and left notable contributions and a bunch of knowledge for us to adapt, in
lifestyle or the ways of living, food, interfering with culture and adding up to it and a lot more. These
changes would be for example, in the Government, a Democratic type of government was adapted and
had three branches given to it such as Executive, Legislative, and Judiciary. In the field of Education,
Public schools were opened and started operation, the first teachers were referred to as the
“thomasites” and the medium of instruction, or language they used were in english. The University of
the Philippines was established during this reign, and so did Philippine Normal University, and other
agricultural universities. In Religion, protestantism was introduced and a great number of Filipinos
became protestants, the church and the state was separated. There were great infrastructure
development during the time which came in handy for transport and other purposes. As the Americans
built buildings, boulevards, zone districts, and centers of leisures were established. Of course movies
and music became more popular in our country. Filipinos learned a lot in sports and games and began
developing the habit of immersing themselves in these such activities. Of course by the the Philippine
Economy improved a lot and there was an increase in Agricultural production. A lot as changed and it
was as though we as Filipinos had almost forgotten and rejected our own identities, yet we live strong
and are reminded strongly each day. Without these changes and improvements, as they clearly are, we
would not be living efficiently in this country in the present, all of which are the product of a past that
was not meant to be, but one which the country very much deserved for a brief period in time.

The Japanese occupation in our country began when Imperial Japan occupied the Commonwealth of the
Philippines during World War II. Well as they all started out from History, The Attack on Pearl Harbor
almost opened up the opportunity but even so, there are several factors as to how the Japanese
brought about successful changes or improvements, or not, within our country. This occupation long
lasted for three years until such reinforcements took their stand as we all imagine it and as history
seemed to go on. Their people, the Japanese as they ruled made up such rules that were a bit too far
when they tried to take us, such as saluting to Japanese soldiers as they went by, or that their flags shall
be displayed in the doors of homes, which were harsh and absurd. During their occupation they heavily
influenced the government by enforcing strict curfew, the use of their currency, military government of
sorts and as they were here, many lives of our people were put on line with their unworthy rule over us.
Basically they wanted this country for themselves as they let their military forces rule among us and
forbid us of our own rights. They prohibited a lot of actions such as singing of our own national anthem
and the use of radios, transmitters and the like, they started to control everything. Well eventually
people took a stand,Filipinos and even some Americans aided us at the time since these countries were
sworn enemies themselves, yet it was not the most glorious of time that the Philippines sought to live
through and thankfully it went away as quickly as it came.
