Background Information ● Your heart is actually a muscle within your body ● It is located on the left side of your chest ● In terms, the heart is about the size of your fist ● It works as a pump throughout the body, moving blood to the major organs The Heart’s Job ● The heart’s main job is to pump blood throughout the body ● It completes this task by: ○ Pumping deoxygenated blood from your body to your lungs ○ Pumping oxygenated blood from your lungs to your body Parts of the Heart ● The heart consist of four parts, or chambers ● The top two chambers are called the atria ○ The atria are chambers that fill with blood that is returning to the heart from the body and lungs ○ There is a left and right atrium ● The bottom two chambers are called the ventricles ○ The ventricles job is to push blood towards the body and lungs ○ There is a left and right ventricle ● In the middle of the heart is the septum ○ Its job is to separate the left side and the right side of the heart ● The valves help blood flow within the body ○ The mitral and tricuspid valves let blood flow from the atria to the ventricles ○ The aortic and pulmonary valves control the flow of blood as it leaves the heart Initial Sketches Final Drawing Parts of the Heart shown in Drawing ● Left Ventricle ● Tricuspid Valve ○ Receives oxygenated blood from the left atrium and pumps this blood ○ Opens to allow blood to flow from the right atrium into the through the aortic semilunar valve into the aorta. right ventricle. ● Right Ventricle ● Mitral Valve ○ The right ventricle is the chamber within the heart that is responsible for ○ Regulates the flow of blood from your lungs into the left pumping oxygen-depleted blood to the lungs. ventricle, the main pumping chamber. ● Left Auricle ○ It collects oxygenated blood as it leaves the lungs and moves the blood ● Aortic Valve into the left ventricle. ○ Functions resulting in the unidirectional flow of blood out ● Right Auricle of the left ventricle, the optimising of coronary blood flow, ○ Receive non-oxygenated blood from upper and lower venae cavae and and preservation of myocardial function. small veins in the thorax and direct it to the right ventricle. ● Interventricular Septum ● Inferior Vena Cava ○ The stout wall separating the ventricles, the lower ○ Responsible for the transport of almost all venous blood (deoxygenated) chambers of the heart, from one another. from the abdomen and lower extremities back to the right side of the heart ● Left Subclavian artery for oxygenation. ○ Supplies blood to the left arm ● Superior Vena Cava ● Right Subclavian Artery ○ This large vein brings deoxygenated blood from the head, neck, arm, and ○ Supplies blood to right arm chest regions of the body to the right atrium. ● Aortic Arch ● Pulmonary Valve ○ Helps distribute blood to the head and upper extremities ○ Blood flows from the right ventricle through the pulmonary valve to the ● Pulmonary Vein pulmonary artery and then into the lungs, where it picks up oxygen to ○ Carries blood from lungs to left atrium deliver to your body. Write-Up I thoroughly enjoyed deepening my understanding of the human heart and how much it does for my body on a daily basis. It was extremely interesting to be able to take my understanding of the heart and create a piece of artwork from it. I found it extremely difficult to label all of the different parts that make up the heart. It is an amazing muscle that provides human with life. Thus, it was very difficult to depict this aspect on a single piece of paper. I am defiantly most proud of my artwork and how I was able to use all different sources in order to put this complex object into a piece of artwork. In conclusion, I believe that the heart is one of the most important muscles in our body and deserves to be portrayed in such a beautiful way. To me, drawing out the different aspects of the heart allowed for this beauty to be seen. Bibliography Chambers of the heart. (n.d.).
