PHILOSOPHY

INTRODUCTION
Philosophy is a search for truth and wisdom and the science of all science.
Different philosophers and educationalists define it in their own words. According to
Henderson, “ philosophy is a search for a comprehensive view of nature , an attempt
at a universal explanation of nature of things “. Philosophy is one of the most
essential components in the structural hierarchy of nursing curriculum.

The philosophy of a nursing school defines the value statements about both the
practice and the teaching of nursing. The statement reflects the values , believes ,
goals or opinions as agreed upon by the members of the school faculty. It needs to be
stated in clear, concise terms and to be directly related to the curriculum. Philosophy
and education have a very close relationship. While education is the active side,
philosophy is the contemplative side. The philosophy of education gives direction to
the aim of education. Important philosophies of education are idealism, naturalism and
pragmatism. The philosophy of nursing education determines the aims, objectives,
content, method of teaching and evaluation.

DEFINITION
Philosophy can be defined as study of problems that are ultimate, abstract and
general. These problems are concerned with the nature of existence, knowledge,
morality and human response.
