Cap 10 a LARGO

With video conferencing, you can have a business meeting with people in different places,
but you can see each other.

With texting, you can send written messages on your cell phone.

With video calling, you and a friend can use your computers like phones, but you can also see
each other.

With instant messaging (IM),you can have a written conversation online. You can write
something to a friend and get a response instantly.

With social networking, you can follow what your friends are doing by looking at updates on
their online profiles.

Email is easy to use. It’s not hard .

Regular mail is slow. It’s not quick like email.

One bad thing about email is spam. But it’s easy to delete, and that’s good.

I like to send real cards to friends. They’re special and personal.

E-cards are fun to send. Sometimes a real card can be boring.

Regular mail isn’t always reliable. Sometimes your mail gets lost.

Texting is so quick and easy. You don’t have to make small talk, so it’s really convenient.

I get lots of spam , you know, emails about new medicines or new software you need.

If you don’t have to travel to other countries to do business, you don’t get jet lagand feel
tired for days.
Social networking, email, texting, and video calling are all good ways to contact and keep in
touch with people.

My new tablet is really light. You don’t feel it in your bag at all.

I think video conferencing is a really efficient way to communicate with colleagues. You don’t
waste time traveling or coping with jet lag.

How do the people keep in touch?

WomanHow do you keep in touch with people?
Kayla JohnsonWell, at work we use video conferencing for meetings with our international o-
ffices. It’s less expensive than a business trip. And more convenient. And you don’t get jet lag,
either!
Alma JonesWe use email at work, but I use my social network to keep in touch with friends. I
was getting a lot of spam in my personal email. There’s nothing worse than spam in your
inbox.
Mayumi SatoI text my friends all day. Texting’s a lot quicker and easier than calling. It’s more
fun, too. I can’t do it in class, though.
Paco RodriguezWell, I video call my parents. They think it’s better than the phone because
they can see me. I guess it’s a good way to keep in touch when I’m away at school.
Tim HenryWell, for birthdays and things I still like to send a card. I know regular mail is slower
and less reliable than email, but cards are more personal. And I never send those e-cards. I
just think it’s nicer to get a real card.

Kayla says that video conferencing is less expensive than a business trip.

Alma says nothing is worse than spam in your inbox.

yumi says texting is quicker than calling. It’s more fun than calling, too.

Mayumi likes texting because it’s easier than calling.

Paco’s parents think video calling is a better way to keep in touch than the phone.

Tim knows that regular mail is less reliable than email.

I like to call my friends when I go for a walk. The park’s  quieter than my apartment.
I always call my friends on their birthdays. It’s nicer than just sending a card.
I often make birthday cards. They’re cheaper than the cards in the stores.
My mom never answers her phone. I always drive over to see her. It’s quicker.
I keep in touch with all my cousins at family reunions. It’s easier than calling them all year
round.
My sister and I both live in the same town, but my apartment is nearer my parents’ house. I
guess I see them a lot more.
Spam is worse than regular junk mail.
Business trips are more expensive than video conferencing.
E-cards are better than real cards.
Regular mail is less convenient than email.
Video calls are more fun than phone calls.

BMy laptop. It’s bigger, but it’s more useful than a tablet. Tablets are more difficult to work
on.
AYeah? My sister prefers her tablet. She says it’s lighter than her laptop, so it’s more
convenient to carry around.
ADo you use email much these days? I don’t. I just use my social network.
BMe, too. It’s more efficient than email. And it’s more fun. It’s better thantexting, too.

Blog entry 1:
I think I’m pretty good at keeping in touch with my friends and family. I text my close friends a
lot when we are making arrangements to meet. It's quicker than calling everyone. I also use
social networking a lot.  That's better than anything for keeping in touch. I usually call my
parents because they like to have longer conversations about college and things. They prefer
to use the phone because they think it's more personal. I’m going to set up video calling on
their computer, so they can see me when they’re talking to me.

Blog entry 2:
I’m very good at communicating with my friends and family – I’m always on my laptop! I like to
send instant messages to my friends because it’s quicker than calling and less expensive. I
usually email my family because they're busier than me and they're not always home. They
think email is better, too. My grandmother doesn't have a computer, so I send her cards
sometimes. I like these ways of keeping in touch because writing is quicker and easier for me
than talking – it gives me more time to think!

Blog entry:
I make a lot of phone calls at work and at home. I email a lot too. Sometimes it’s hard to have a
conversation with email, so I often use instant messaging or texts instead. I send letters to my
grandparents but emails to everyone else. I prefer talking to writing, and I especially love
chatting with my friends! Last night I spent two hours on the phone with my best friend!

My coworker always interrupts me when I’m working.

There’s someone at the door.

I’ve got another call.

Maria and Sarah are talking

on the phone.

2 Maria and Sarah look unhappy.

Maria called Sarah. Sarah is at home.

Maria called Sarah to share news about getting married.

Maria doesn’t tell Sarah the date of the wedding because somebody comes to Sarah’s door.

Sarah agrees to be the maid of honor.

SarahHello?
MariaHi, Sarah. It's Maria.
SarahHey. How are you doing?
MariaGreat. Listen, I have some news. Juan and I went out to a fancy restaurant last night
and . . .
SarahOh, just a minute. I've got another call. Hold on a second.. . . Sorry. So, what were
you saying?
MariaWell, guess what? We're getting married.
SarahThat's wonderful! Congratulations!
MariaThanks. So yeah, the wedding's going to be in . . .
SarahOh, sorry. Now there's someone at the door. Hold on.. . . OK. So, you were saying?
MariaWell, I was just calling to ask – will you be my maid of honor?
SarahAre you kidding? Of course!

Notice how Sarah interrupts the conversation and comes back to it with expressions like these:

Just a minute / second. What were you saying?
Excuse me just a second. You were saying?
I'm sorry. Hold on (a second). Where were we?
Could / Can you hold on a second? What were we talking about?

You can’t hear someone clearly. You’re breaking up.
You call the wrong number by mistake. I’m sorry. I have the wrong number.
You come back to a conversation after an interruption. Where were we?

Texting is very discreet . You can do it and no one can see you.

Do you answer a text as soon as it pops up on your phone?
Cell phones are commonplace today. Everyone has one.
I type texts with my fingers, but my sister uses her thumbs.
I heard a public service advertisement on the radio about the dangers of texting while
driving.
How many of your friends have problems with their hands or injuries to their thumbs because
they text too much?
My brother can type text messages really fast. It’s impressive!
I use a lot of symbols when I send text messages. For example, I always type a smiley face : )
at the end of my text messages.
Some social networks only allow 140 characters – letters and word spaces – in one message.
I always use abbreviations when I text, like WDYT? for What do you think?

1 Texting takes less time than calling.

2 Texting your parents in public is less embarrassing than talking on the phone.

3 Texting is useful when you ask a favor.

The fact that one third of American texters prefer to text than talk on the phone caught my
eye. That’s like me. I hate making phone calls.
I don’t think there are any real downsides to texting. It’s just another good way to
communicate.

The pros and cons of social networking

Social networking is a really popular way to keep in touch with friends and family. Millions of
people have social network accounts and over 70% of Internet users use this form of
communication.
Social networking is a great way to read about your friends' news and to tell them yours.
You can post photos of nights out, sports events, or vacations.
On the other hand, there are downsides to social networking. If you are not careful with
your privacy settings, everyone from your boss to your best friend can see your embarrassing
photos or read about your weekend plans. Messages can stay on the Internet forever - you
can't always delete them when you are older and wiser.
Social networks, in my opinion, are mostly good. However, you need to be careful about
your privacy, and don't put something on there that's going to embarrass you in future years.

The Pros and Cons of Email

Almost everyone has an email account these days, and a lot of people find email useful at
work.

It’s a good way to send files to people. A lot of students email homework to their teachers. It’s a
convenient way to hand in homework.

On the other hand, there are some disadvantages with email. You can get a lot of spam. It’s
also difficult to keep email accounts safe.  You can lose important personal information.

In my opinion, email is useful for work and school. However, for communication with friends
and family texting or video calls are better.

The Pros and Cons of Social Networking

Social networking is very popular, and a lot of people have a social networking page.

It’s a great way to find out about your friends, and it’s a good way to post information about
your life. You can post messages and photos and tell people your news.   It’s a great way to
keep in touch with a lot of people at the same time.

However, social networking can be a problem. Some people talk all the time about their
fantastic social lives.  It can make friends think their lives are boring, and they can feel jealous.
People often spend too much time on their social networking sites, too.

In my opinion, social networking is a good way to connect with people. However, you have to
be careful with information you post, and not spend all your time on it.
