APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR MEDICAL ELECTIVE STUDENT PROGRAMME

Applications must include the following;


 Completed Medical Elective Application Form (including dates requested)

 Name and address of the Dean of your Medical School

 Letter of recommendation from your head of department in support of your application

 Copy of your current, brief curriculum vitae

It is advisable to apply at least 12 months in advance of the date you wish to attend.

Applications are also accepted via email electives@moorfields.nhs.uk

The Postgraduate Medical Education Centre will contact you via email regarding your acceptance
onto the programme and the availability of the dates you have selected.

FEES

The Trust charges a fee of £100 for a four-week (or calendar month) elective period. This fee
must be paid in advance and is non-refundable.
We only accept payment in pounds sterling via;
 Debit or credit card

 Overseas bankers’ cheque drawn on a UK bank

 Personal cheque for holders of a UK bank account

Cheques must be made out to ‘Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust’.
Payment must NOT be made by bank transfer.
CONFIRMATION

Your elective period can only be confirmed upon receipt of the £100 fee and a signed Agreement
Form.

As soon as your visit has been agreed you will receive a formal letter of confirmation including
details of how to find the hospital. Your timetable will be provided on your first day and must be
followed at all times.

We reserve the right to give your elective placement to another doctor if you have not arrived
within 24 hours of your agreed start date and have not communicated with us in any way.

REGULATIONS

At no time must you attempt to take any photographs whilst on the hospital premises. You

must maintain patient confidentiality at all times, and respect patient privacy.

Smart dress is expected. Jeans, trainers and sports gear of any sort are unacceptable at any time.

Observers must abide by the NHS hygiene guidelines listed below;


- No white coats
- ‘Bare below the elbow’
- No wrist watches/jewellery (only small wedding band may be worn)
- No arm bands
- Ties, if worn, should not be hanging loose

FURTHER INFORMATION

We cannot arrange accommodation for you, but details of an accommodation agency that is used by
our visitors is available on request.

To enable you to maximise the benefit from your time at Moorfields we suggest you read a basic
ophthalmology textbook prior to arrival. It will be assumed that you have some ophthalmic
knowledge, as it will not be possible to explain very basic procedures during the busy clinics.

Please bring a direct ophthalmoscope that you are familiar with, to enable you to examine
patients.

No references whatsoever will be offered or given at the end of your time at Moorfields. The
nature of your stay here is purely observational, so no member of staff will be able to make
comments about your professional abilities. This includes assessment forms from Medical
Schools which require students to be graded or assessed in clinical skills.

At the end of your visit (on your last day) you will receive a certificate of attendance signed by the
Director of Education.
