Field Study #2: An investigation into the anthropogenic impacts on Peach, Flavours and Fantasy
beaches in St. Ann, Jamaica over a six (6) month period.

(Entry #2)

Date:
December 16, 2019
Time: Site 1: 9:35 am Site 2: 10:04 am Site 3: 10:26 am

Sites: Peach Beach, Flavours Beach and Fantasy Beach

Weather conditions: Humidity: Site 1: 68% Site 2: 77% Site 3: 81%

Objectives: 1. To observe the coastal zones for evidence of wat

and land depletion
2. To collect water sample from the sites for the
testing of Dissolved Oxygen
3. To identify the various forms of contaminants at
coastal zones
4. To interview users of the coastal zones
5. To capture visual images to support coastal deple

Activities:
On all sites there were no evidence of swimming.
Site 1 had individuals selling fish.
The researchers continued to observe the coastal zones
for water and land pollution. Water samples were collect
to test DO.
Photographs were taken at each site and interviews were
carried out only at site one (1) because of the availabilit
the fish vendors and fishermen on site. At the other two
locations the populations were fairly sparse.

NB. Overall, minimal activities seen. Peach beach recorde

more users of the beach and hence had the greatest lev
of activities carried out.
Observations:
Site 1: Items of clothing, bottles, choppy sea, leaves, se
Site 1: Peach Beach, Discovery Bay weed, water settled on back shore, less patrons,
surroundings cleared of garbage, evidence of garbage
collection

Site 2: Flavours Beach, Runaway Bay Site 2: increased in runoff into stormwater drain, sea
weeds, solid waste, turbidity improved from last
observation, destructive waves, erosion on beach area, le
beach activities

Site 3: Fantasy Beach, Priory Site 3: Secondary succession- almond plants increased
lower turbidity. Evidence of less debris, no evidence of
beach users. Persons appear to be loitering on the
backshore, increased beach erosion

Interpretative Comments:
. Site 1:  It appeared as if the beach had recently clear
of debris, hence the clean surroundings. Fewer patrons
to the day and time of the week. Fallen leaves contribute
to the litter and the early morning showers were
responsible for the water settling or accumulating on th
backshore

Site2: The showers experienced earlier could have

contributed to the increased in runoff and hence an
increased in the water in stormwater drain. The erosion
sand from shore line due to destructive wave; where the
backwash is stronger than the swash

Site3: Disturbance of the sand on the beach due to str

waves resulted in coastal erosion. The growth of new
almond plant due to wind dispersal of seeds from nearby
almond tree. Greater efforts were made to keep the bea
clean with the use of the few garbage disposal units and
cleanup activities. This situation could have also been
improved due to the questions that were asked during ou
last site visit pertaining to the upkeep of the beach.
