Exercise

 Without using any artificial variables, setup the starting

tableau of this LP.
 What is your starting BFS?
 Perform a complete iteration using your starting tableau.
 What are the entering and leaving variables?
 What is your basic feasible solution after one iteration?
 Is this the optimal solution?

 You are given a tableau from a simplex iteration of an LP (Max

Problem).
 Using this tableau, is it possible to generate an optimal
solution of this LP that is not an extreme point?
 If yes, generate it, else justify why it is not possible.

Exercise

Use the Two-Phase and Big-M methods to solve the

following system of linear equations. For each method,
setup the starting tableau and perform only one iteration.

Exercise

Consider the following simplex tableau wherein a Max problem is being solved.
The following conditions stated below are independent of each other and they all
refer to the simplex tableau. For each condition, clearly state the range of values
the relevant parameters A to G can take so that the condition is true. Include a
brief justification for the indicated range of values.

a. The first iteration in Phase II can start.

b. You can conclude that the LP is unbounded.
c. The tableau is optimal and there is an alternative optimum solution.
d. x6 is the entering variable and x3 is the leaving variable.
e. x7 is the entering variable but when x7 enters the solution, z remains
unchanged.

x1 x2 x3 x4 x5 x6 x7 Solution
0 G 0 A 3 B C z
x2 0 1 0 D 1 0 3 E
x3 0 0 1 -2 2 F -1 2
x1 1 0 0 0 -1 2 1 3

A company manufactures an assembly consisting of a frame, a shaft and a ball

bearing. The company manufactures the shafts and frames but purchases the
ball bearings from a local supplier.

Each shaft must be processed on a forging machine, a lathe and a grinder. These
operations require 0.5 hours, 0.2 hours and 0.3 hours per shaft respectively.

Each frame requires 0.8 hours on the forging machine, 0.1 hours on the drilling
machine, 0.3 hours on the milling machine and 0.5 hours on a grinder.

The company has 5 lathes, 10 grinders, 20 forging machines, 3 drillers and 6

millers. Assume that each machine operates a maximum of 2400 hours per year.

Formulate the problem of finding the maximum number of assembled

components that can be produced as an LP.
