Throughout the book, we seethat Oskar has troublesieepingnight.

lays awake in bed, and others he invents totry andcalm his mind. Whatever the reason, it seems

Oskarjust can't get a good night's sleep. Andwith al thethoughtsswiring around inside his

head, it's no secret why he can't.

As someone who has amild case of insomnia, i can relatein partto Oskar. While it does

take me a while to falt asleep at night,I don't have the same level ofseveritythat Oskars

insomnia seems to have. According to the National Sleep Foundation,insomnia can becaused by

medical issues, anxiety, depression, or byhaving an active brain. Our brainis supposedtohavea

sleep cycle, part-time awake and part-time asleep. For those withvery active brains, like Oskar's

as we see from his narration style, can


it be difficultto fall asleep at night. The websitealso

mentions that anxiety canbe a big factor in not being able tosleep. The anxiety symptoms that

lead to insomnia can include "tension,gettin caught up in thoughts: ut past events, excessive

worrying about future events, orfeelingoverwhelmed by responsibilities." We know that Oskar


is caught up in the past, but with the scape ofthe Black investigation, he also worries about the

future and feels like hehas too much on his plate. All this worry and activity swirling around in

Oskar's head is creating the extremeinsomniathat seems to plague him constantly.

In my artpiece, I wanted to portray the thoughtsinOskar's head as he tries to fallasleep.

In the bottom right-hand comer is Oskar, small compared to the magnitude of thethings he is

thinking about. I then tried to make things he thinks about the most the largest items on the
