UNIT-I
1) A bar of 30mm diameter is subjected to a pull of 60KN. The measured extension on gauge length of 200mm
is 0.09mm and the change in diameter is 0.0039mm.calculate the Poisson’s ratio and the value of three
moduli.

2) A steel rod of 20mm diameter is enclosed in a hollow copper tube of external diameter 30mm and internal
diameter 25mm. the composite bar is then subjected to an axial pull of 40KN. Find the stresses in the rod
and tube. Take Es for steel is 200KN/mm2 and Ec for copper is 100KN/mm2

3) An aluminium cylinder of diameter 60 mm located inside a steel cylinder of internal diameter 60 mm and
External dia of 90mm. The assembly is subjected to a compressive force of 200 KN. What are the forces
carried and stresses developed in steel and aluminium? Take modulus of elasticity for steel as 200 Gpa
and Aluminium as 50 Gpa

4) A steel tube of 30 mm external diameter and 25 mm internal diameter encloses a gu metal rod of 20 mm dia
to which it is rigidly joined at each end. The temperature of the whole assembly is raised to 150 0C. Find the
intensity of stress in the rod the temperature has fallen to 20 0C. The value of the youngs modulus for steel
and gun metals are 2.1X105 N/mm2 and 1X105 N/mm2 respectively. The coefficient of linear expansion for
steel is 12x10 -6/0C for gun metal is
20x10 -6/0C

5) A steel tube of 20 mm internal diameter and 30 mm external dia encases a copper rod of 15 mm dia to
which it is rigidly joined at each end. If the temperature of the assembly is raised by 80 0 C calculate the
stress produced in the tube. E s= 2.1X105 N/mm2, Ec=1X105 N/mm2. The coefficient of linear expansion for
steel is 18x10-6/0C for copper is 11x10 -6/0C.

6) A compound tube consisits of a steel tube of 140 mm internal diameter and 5 mm thickness and an outer
brass tube of 150 mm internal diameter and 5 mm thick. The two tubes are same length. Compound tube
carries an axial load of 600 KN. Find the stresses carried by each tube and amount of shortening. Length of
the tube is 120 mm. Es= 2.1X105 N/mm2, Eb=1X105 N/mm2.
UNIT-II
7) A beam 8m long is simply supported at the ends and carries a uniformly distributed load of 1.5KN/m and
three point load of 1KN, 2KN, and 4KN acting respectively at the left quarter point, centre point, and right
quarter point. Draw SFD and BMD.

8) A beam 6m long rests on supports 5m apart, the right hand end is overhanging by 1m. The beam carries a
UDL of 20KN/m over the entire length of the beam. Draw SFD and BMD indicating the maximum bending
moment and the point of contra flexure.

9) A cantilever 1.5 m long is loaded with a uniformly distributed load of 2KN/m run over a length of 1.25m from
the free end. It also carries a point load of 3KN at a distance of 0.25 m from the free end. Draw the shear
force and bending moment diagrams of the cantilever

10) A beam of length 10 m is simply supported at its ends carries two concentrated loads of 5 KN each at a
distance of 3 m and 7 m from the left support and also a uniformly distributed load of 1KN/m between the
point loads. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams. Calculate the maximum bending
moment.

11) A simply supported beam is freely supported over a span of 6m. It carries a UDL of 3 KN/m over 1.5m
from the left hand support and also from the center upto the right hand support. It has, besides two point

loads of 2 and 5 KN at 1.5 and 4.5 m from left hand support. Construct the SF and BM diagrams and
caluclate the Maximum Bending moment value.

13) A simply supported timber beam of span 6m carries a UDL of 12KN/m over the entire span and a point
load of 9 KN at 2.5 m from the left support. If the bending stress in timber is not to exceed 8 N/mm 2 ,
design a suitable section for the beam. The depth of beam equals twice the breadth.

UNIT-III
14) A solid steel shaft has to transmit 100 KW at 160 rpm taking allowable shear stress as 70 Mpa, find the
suitable diameter of the shaft, The maximum torque transmitted in each revolution exceeds the mean by
20%.

15) Derive an equation of maximum torque transmitted by a hollow circular solid shaft and solid shaft

16) A hollow shaft is to transmit 300 KW at 100 rpm. If the shear stress is not to exceed 60 N/mm 2 and the
internal diameters of 0.6 times the external diameter. Find the internal and external diameters of the shaft.
The maximum torque exceeds the mean by 10%

17) A solid shaft is to transmit 300 KW at 100 rpm if the shear stress is not to exceed 80 N/mm 2 . Find the
diameter of the shaft. If this shaft were to be replaced by hollow shaft of same material and length with an
internal diameter of 0.6 times the external diameter, what percentage saving in weight is possible.

18) A closed coil helical spring of round steel wire 10 mm diameter has a mean radius of 120 mm. The spring
has 10 complete turns and is subjected to an axial load of 200 N. determine the (i) Deflection (ii) maxhimum
shear stress in wire (iii) stiffness of spring. G = 80 KN/mm2.

19) A closed coil helical spring is to deflect 1 mm under the axial load of 100 N at shearing of 90 N/mm 2. The
spring is to be made of round wire having rigidity of modulus of 80X10 4 N/mm2. The mean dia of the spring
is to be 10 times the diameter of the wire. Find the diameter and length of the wire necessary to form the
spring.

20) An open coiled helical spring made of 5 mm diameter wire has 16 coils 100 mm inner diameter with helix
angle of 160. Calculate the deflection, maximum durect and shear stresses induced due to axial load of 300
N. Take G= 90 Gpa and E= 200Gpa

UNIT-IV
21) A hollow cylindrical cast iron internal diameter is 0.6 times the external diameter. The length of the column
is 5m with both ends fixed. If the column carries a safe load of 200X103N with factor of safety of 6, find
minimum diameter of column. Take sc= 550N/mm2 and a =1/1600.

22) A hollow cylindrical column of 150mm external diameter of 150mm and 15mm thick, 3m long is hinged at
the one and fixed at the other end. Calculate the crippling for Euler formula and rankine’s formula. And
also find ratio of Euler and rankine’s critical load, slenderness ratio.

23) Determine the critical stress for a series of column having slenderness ratio of 50,100,150, and 200 under
the following condition by Euler’s formula.
1. Both ends hinged
2. Both ends fixed. Take E =2.1X105N/mm2.

24) A hollow CI column outside dia is 200 mm has a thick 20 mm. it is 4.5 m long and is fixed at both ends.
Caluclate the safe load by Rankines formula using a fos of 4. Calculate slenderness ratio and the ratio of
eulers and rankines critical loads.Take crushing stress 550 N/mm 2 a=1/1600and E=9.4X104

25) A SS Beam of 8 m span carries a point load of 10 KN at its centre. It also subjects toa UDL of 1 KN/m
over its entire span. Find the maximum deflection of Beam. E =2.1X105N/mm2 , I= 200X106 mm4

26) A Cantilever Beam of 4 m long carries a load of 50 KN at a distance of 2 m from the free end, and a load
of W at the free end. If the deflection at the free end is 25 mm, calculate the magnitude of the load W, and
slope of the free end E =2.1X105N/mm2 , I= 5X107 mm4

27) A cylindrical shell 1 m diameter and 3 m length is subjected to an internal pressure of 2 Mpa. Calculate the
minimum thickness if the stress should not exceed 50 Mpa. Find the change in diameter and volume of the
shell. Find the change in diameter and volume of the shell. Poisson’s ratio = 0.3 and E = 200KN/mm 2.

28) A spherical shell of internal diameter 1 m and thickness of 10 mm is subjected to an internal pressure of
1.5 Mpa. Calculate the change in dimensions of the shell. Take Poisson’s ratio = 0.3 and E = 200KN/mm 2.

29) A cylindrical shell 3 m long, 1 m internal diameter and 10 mm thick is subjected to an internal pressure of
1.5 N/mm2. Calculate the changes in length, diameter and volume of the cylinder. Poisson’s ratio = 0.3 and
E = 200KN/mm2.

30) A Rectangular block of material is subjected to a tensile stress of 110 N/mm 2 on one plane and a tensile of
47 N/mm2 on a plane at right angles to each other. Each stress is accompanied by a shear stress of 63
N/mm2. Determine the principal stresses, principal plane and the maximum shear stress.

31)The stresses at a point in a strained material is 1 = 200N/mm2 2 = -150N/mm2 and q=80N/mm2. Find the
principal plane and principal stresses using analytical method and verify with graphical method.

32) Two planes AB and AC which are right angles carry shear stress of intensity 17.5 N/mm 2 while these
planes also carry a tensile stress of 70 N/mm2 and a compressive stress of 35 N/mm2 respectively.

32) A thin cylindrical shell 3 m long, 1.2 m in diameter is subjected to an internal pressure of 1.67 N/mm 2. If the
thickness of the shell is 13 mm, find the circumferential and longitudional stresses. Also find the maximum
shear stress and change in dimensions of the shell. Assume E=2X10 5N/ mm2 and 1/m=0.28. .
33) The tensile stress at appoint across two mutually perpendicular plane are 120N/mm2 and 60N/mm2.
Determine the normal and tangential, resultant stress on a plane at 300 to the axis of the minor stress. And
also verify the analytical method.
