The Direct Internet Access System (DIAS) provides high bandwidth, leased line
Internet and telephone connectivity over a single pair of copper wire. Basic Service
Operators providing telephony can now upgrade their system to offer Leased
Internet Access without any change in the existing copper infrastructure. DIAS
provides Internet Access that is permanently available at the subscriber premises.
Using Digital Subscriber Loop (DSL) technique, seamless voice and data
connectivity is provided to the customer. The advantage of the system is that the
customer can use both voice and internet simultaneously on the same line.
DIAS ARCHITECHURE
The DIAS has two sub-system viz Integrated Access Node and Digital Subscriber
Unit. The Digital Subscriber Unit (DSU) at the customer premises, combines voice
and internet data packets and transmits the combined data to IAN on a single
twisted pair. At the service provider’s premises, an Integrated Access Node (IAN)
separates the voice and data from number of customers and routes them
independently to the PSTN and ISP.
The data rate depends upon the type of subscriber unit being used at the customer
premises.
The IAN is built to cater 60 subscribers in a single 19-inch sub rack. The highly
scalable architecture of the DIAS makes it possible to stack more than one IAN s in a
single rack to increase subscriber capacity. The entire stack is manageable through
the local interface or over network using standard SNMP based management tools.
The DIAS has its own SNMP manager. The IAN houses the central processor, the E1
uplink and line cards. All line cards have hot insert/removal capability for easy field
maintenance. IAN has powerful set of diagnostics and extensive remote management
capabilities. The IAN provides optional power feed over the network to subscriber
that are within 1 km from IAN.
Digital Subscriber Unit :
The Subscriber Units are located at the subscriber premises. The system supports
two types of Subscriber Unit.
Basic Digital Subscriber Unit (BDSU) supports a maximum data rate of 144 kbps and
provides internet access at this rate. This subscriber unit is best suited for residential
installation. The unit is powered locally from the AC mains and is backed by power
from the network. In case of local power failure, the BDSU still keeps the telephone
operational – an essential requirement for a lifeline service like the telephone.
High Bit Rate Digital Subscriber Unit (HDSU), supports a maximum data rate of 2
mbps. The unit is powered locally from AC mains and is backed by power from the
network.
ADVANTAGES OF DIAS
Aggregating long duration data calls at the IAN thereby decongesting the trunk
network of Basic Service Provider.
Upto 60 Basic Rate (BDSU) subscribers and 20 High Bit Rate (HDSU) subscribers.
IP address management.
Adaptive bit rate : 144 Kbps when voice not used and 80 kbps when
voice in use.
The IAN can be connected to the PSTN using V5.2 standards. However, the
IAN can also be connected to PSTN which do not support v5.2 Protocol. A
exchange providing all the features and services of the exchange to the
subscriber.
For enhancing the capacity, the LAN can be cascaded at the service
Base Ethernet. The combined Internet data from all the IANs is taken to
the ISP.
