Introduction

The project that has been assigned to us was to cold work medium carbon steel, we
were given three samples in which one was cold worked 25% and the other two
were cold worked about 50 and 75 percent. We then with a help of the CT
diagrams designed a process in which the cold worked samples recrystallization
occurred to produce equiaxed grains. After that we compared the hardness values
and the grain size values of each sample

Microscopy
The figure given below shows the sample that has been cold worked about 25% and has
been heat treated using the help of the CT diagram

(Qasim attach all the other micrographs)

From the above given micrographs we deduce some very important conclusions, as the
amount of cold working is increased we can see that the grain size of the material reduces
and this causes the material to increase in strength. Grain sizes of each have been given
under the section of calculations. It should be understood, however, that increasing the
strength by cold-working will also result in a reduction in ductility.

Calculations
HRB (Hardness value Sample
B Scale)

88.5 25% cold worked

92.3 50% cold worked

94.6 75% cold worked

Grain Size Number Sample

25% cold worked
50% cold worked
75% cold worked

Process
For the process, the following TTT Diagram was used so that after cold working of the
material the material recrystallizes and contains equiaxed grains. Initially the cold
working process is done by rolling of the material after that the following heat treatment
was done.
