Paint System Matrix Table- 1

1. Scope :- Surface preparation and Painting of external surface of pumps and auxiliary
equipment

2. Surface preparation & coating:


a. Paints shall be applied fully in accordance with the manufacturer’s product data sheet.

b. The compressed air used for blasting, cleaning or drying shall be free from water and oil.

c. Clean thoroughly all exposed parts to be painted, like all weld spatters, excess flux to remove
scale rust, oil, grease, dirt and other foreign materials by wire brushing and solvent cleaning. If
required grind the surfaces to remove the rough or sharp edges, parting line mark etc. before
blasting operation. Blasting to be done to achieve the final surface finish Sa 2 ½ as per ISO
8501-1, SIS 05 – 5900 / SP10 [SSPC] near white blast cleaning and the required profile should
be as per Product Data Sheet of approved paint mfg. Grit will be used for blasting CS moc,
Steel Grit / Iron Grit / Copper Slag or equivalent metallic grit and for blasting SS, Duplex moc,
Glass bead / Garnet / Aluminum oxide to be used

d. Immediately after grit blasting and if required grinding, all surfaces dust shall be removed with
compressed air, free of oil, moisture and afterward within 4 hours one coat of the applicable
primer shall be applied to protect surfaces from rusting.

e. After acceptance of assembled pump set for painting, clean the surfaces to be painted with a
general thinner so that the surface become free from dust, stain marks, traces of oil and grease.

f. Clean the surfaces by dry air blow.

g. The pump nozzles and other connections shall be properly covered while cleaning and
painting.

h. Coating shall not be carried on wet substrate; > 85% Relative humidity. Coating shall be
applied when substrate temperature is at least 3ºC above dew point.

i. Patch-up / repair the primer coat wherever required. Also ensure the components or
surfaces, which are not to be painted, are masked properly and apply finish coat as per
applicable paint system.

j. Defects such as runs, sags, drips and voids shall be corrected as detected during application
of coating.

k. SPI Scope -Stainless steel / Duplex surfaces of interconnecting piping (from Seal
systems to pump & reverse piping - Flushing) will not be paint

l. As per API 610 11th edition Clause 7.3.12, For Grouted baseplate, bottom side of base plate
will be paint with one coat of Epoxy Primer and for Non-grouted baseplate full paint system will
be apply.

m. In vertical pumps for Stainless steel pump parts below support plate like column pipes, bowls,
stage Casings etc. will not be painted.

n. In vertical pumps for CS parts, inside surface area of inlet/ outlet Casing, Column Pipe, Bowl
assembly & CAN shall not be painted, only rust preventive oil will be applied.

o. In vertical pumps for CS parts Outside surfaces of Column Pipe and Bowl assembly shall
not be painted; only rust preventive oil will be applied.

p. Mounting flange / Sole plate- mating machined surfaces including serrations with other
components will not be paint, for CS moc only rust oil shall be applied. Periphery surfaces of
Mounting flange / Sole plate will be painted in case of CS moc. For SS moc painting depends on
the specific project requirements.

3. Painting System:
3.1 For carbon steel, cast iron, CA6NM, CA15 steel external surfaces having operating
temperature up to 90 ºC.

4. The coating system is based upon the paint supplied by Ms. Akzonobel India [International
Protective coatings] / Ms. Hempel India Paints.

5. DFT will be measured as per SSPC PA-2.

6. The details of thinners, mixing ratio and drying times shall be as per paint manufacturer’s
recommendation.
7. Dry film thickness shown is minimum, excessive paint thickness will be kept as low as
practically possible.
8. Coupling Guard & Seal guard (Aluminum moc) will be paint with finish shade as per 3.1.
(Brass moc will not be paint).
9. For special tests, refer the approved SPI ITP.

10. Parts and surfaces not to be painted.


Below mentioned surfaces shall not be painted, unless otherwise specified by
customer on the specific sales order
a) Galvanized Steel, St. steel Tubing etc.
b) Copper, Brass, Bronze etc.
b) Interior surfaces of piping and equipment
c) Instruments, gauge glasses, nameplates, SS Strainer etc.
d) Seal face of flanges, earthing points.
e) Plastic and plastic-coated materials
f) Machined surfaces of motor pedestal on baseplate and pump foot rest.
g) Companion flanges of Pump TP connections.
h) Factored equipment as Motor, gear box, Turbine, Valve etc.
