Group Assignment
BDA 31003 FINITE ELEMENT METHOD
SEM 2 2019/2020

Heat Exchanger is a mechanical device that is used to transfer heat between two or more fluids at different
temperatures usually separated by heat transfer surface (tubular, flat plate or fins). Figure (1) shows a
tubular counter flow heat exchanger.

Figure (1): Tubular Heat Exchanger

As a mechanical engineer, you are requested to propose one design of heat exchanger (Design 1) and then
improve your design and propose another design that is more efficient than the previous one (Design 2).
Based on your Finite Element Analysis results, you are also expected to make a suggestion to improve the
heat flow rates and the overall heat transfer coefficient.

Note:

a. Select your heat exchanger’s parameters (size, fluid type , flow rate, number of tubes) depends on
your selected application.
b. This assignment trains students in real engineering involving:
 Importing CAD drawing and meshing
 Manipulating meshing to convert to 3D model from 2D
 Requires comprehension in 2D and 3D heat transfer analysis
 Requires understanding that changing heat exchanger’s parameters will create different
heat flow rate and heat transfer coefficient.
 Comprehension in heat transfer and understanding the parameters involved in the
analysis
 Thinking how to improve the design based on analytical data
c. Your group assignment report will be marked based on the marking scheme below:
