Midpoints 1 – horizontal and vertical

1. Plot the following points and find the point half way between them (the midpoint)

a) (5,2) (9,2) b) (3,6) (11,6)

c) (1,1) (1,5) d) (2,2) (2,6)
e) (-10,3) (-6,3) f) (5,-4) (7,-4)
g) (-3,-2) (1,-2) h) (-8,-1) (-8,5)
i) (-4,-1) (-4,5) j) (10,-1) (10,-3)

The rule for finding the midpoint is to find the mean of the pair of x coordinates and
the mean of the y coordinates. If the x or the y coordinates are the same in the 2
points, it stays the same in the midpoint.
Example:
59 
The midpoint of question a) – (5, 2) and (9, 2) is  , 2  = (7, 2)
 2 
2. Without drawing calculate the midpoint of the following points (be careful with the
negative ones)
a) (10,1) (10,5) b) (1,5) (9,5)
c) (2,-6) (6,-6) d) (-5,-2) (-5,-4)
e) (4,3) (-2,3) f) (-7,4) (-7,-4)
Check your answers by plotting the points
Midpoints 2 – Sloping Lines

3. Plot the following points or use the rule to find the point half way between them
(the midpoint)

The RULE for finding the midpoint is to find the mean of the pair of x coordinates and
the mean of the y coordinates.
Example:
59 7 2
The midpoint of (5, 7) and (9, 2) is  ,  = (7, 4½)
 2 2 

a) (2,3) (4,5) b) (1,8) (9,2)

c) (0,11) (12,11) d) (3,15) (13,3)
e) (6,6) (0,0) f) (15,9) (3,3)
g) (1,5) (5,6) h) (3,3) (4,0)
i) (4,5) (0,0) j) (1,3) (8,1)
