Solution of Problem 1:
The total of six analyses has been done using Slope/w, as shown in fig. 1. The Morgenstern-Price
method has been used for the analyses purpose. The Factor of safety values are shown below for
each analysis. The difference between these analyses are given below.

Fig. 1. Problem 1_KeyIn Analyses

1-Stability analyses _4*4*4:

In this type of analyses, slip surface was determined by using the grid ad radius method. In which
grid has 16 centers of circle and 4 radius tangent lines were drawn. Therefore software had drawn
64 slip surfaces The critical circular slip surface and the associated minimum factor of safety is
shown in fig.2. The min. FOS is 1.291.

Fig. 2. Analysis Result _ Critical Slip Surface _ Minimum Factor of safety_64 Circles
2-Stability Analyses _ Circle 20*20*20:
In this type of analyses, slip surface was determined by using the grid ad radius method. In which
grid has 400 centers of circle and 20 radius tangent lines were drawn. Therefore software had
drawn 8000 slip surfaces. The critical circular slip surface and the associated minimum factor of
safety is shown in fig.3. The min. FOS is 1.201.

Fig. 3. Analysis Result _ Critical Slip Surface _ Minimum Factor of safety_8000 Circles

3-Optimize _ Grid and radius 20*20*20:

In this type of analyses, slip surface was determined by using the grid ad radius method and
optimize critical slip surface location box had been checked to optimize the results obtained in
second analyses. In which grid has 400 centers of circle and 20 radius tangent lines were drawn.
Therefore software had drawn 8000 slip surfaces. The Optimized critical slip surface and the
associated minimum factor of safety is shown in fig.4. The min. FOS is 1.184.

Minimum FOS

4-Exit and Entry Method:

In this type of analyses, slip surface was determined by using the Exit and Entry method. The
critical slip surface and the associated minimum factor of safety is shown in fig.5. The min. FOS
is 1.203.

Fig. 5. Analysis Result _ Exit & Entry _Critical Slip Surface _ Minimum Factor of safety
5-Exit and Entry + tangent radius lines Method:
In this type of analyses, slip surface was determined by using the Exit and Entry method along
which radius tangent lines were drawn. The critical slip surface and the associated minimum factor
of safety is shown in fig.6. The min. FOS is 1.201.

Fig. 6. Analysis Result _ Exit & Entry + tangent radius lines _Critical Slip Surface _ Minimum FOS

6-Optimize _ Exit & Entry Method plus tangent radius lines:

In this type of analyses, slip surface was determined by using the Exit and Entry method along
which radius tangent lines were drawn and optimize critical slip surface location box had been
checked to optimize the results obtained in analyses. The Optimized critical slip surface and the
associated minimum factor of safety is shown in fig.7. The min. FOS is 1.184.
Fig. 7. Analysis Result _ Exit & Entry + tangent radius lines _Optimized Critical Slip Surface _ Minimum
FOS

Conclusion:
Different methods had been used for determining the critical slip surface. When grid and radius
method was optimized, the min. FOS was reduced from 1.291 to 1.184. When exit and entry
method was optimized, the min. FOS was reduced from 1.203 to 1.183.
Solution of Problem 2:
The total of six analyses has been done using Seep/w and Slope/w for the solution of Problem 2,
as shown in fig. 8. The two of them are Seep/w analyses and the remaining are Slope/W analyses.
The coupling of Seep/w and slope/w had been done. The solution consists of Part A and Part B, as
shown in fig. 8.

Fig. 8. Tree for the KeyIn Analyses of Problem 2

Part A:
• Part A involves the steady state analysis with which the slope/w analysis was coupled to
determine the critical slip surface for upstream and downstream side of the dam.
• The phreatic surface inside the dam, flow vectors, contours of pressure head with contour
labels and flux quantity through the flux section are shown in fig.9, fig.10, fig.11 and
fig.12 respectively. All these results were combined in fig. 13.
• The optimized critical slip surface along with minimum factor of safety is shown in fig.
14 for upstream side of dam and fig. 15 shows the optimized critical slip surface along
with minimum factor of safety for downstream side of dam. Grid & radius plus optimize
critical slip surface location option was used to determine optimized critical slip surface
and the associated minimum factor of safety.

Part B:

• Transient seepage analysis of rapid drawdown condition up to a duration of 100 days after the
draw down is completed.
• At 0 day (initial condition), the flux quantity was 2.8585e-005m3/sec, as shown in fig. 16, which
was reduced to 4.8833e-006, as shown in fig. 17.
• The data for the evolution of minimum factor of safety with time for upstream side is exported
from the Geo-studio 2007 and shown in table1 and fig. 18 and fig 19 for upstream side of dam.
The fig.18 shows the evolution of minimum factor of safety during the rapid draw down interval.
It was found that FOS was reduced. After 2.5 hours to 100 days FOS value was increased and
become stable as shown in Fig. 19.
• The data for the evolution of minimum factor of safety with time for downstream side is exported
from the Geo-studio 2007 and shown in table 2 and fig. 20. It was found that FOS was increased
with the passage of time due to reduction in total head and dispersion of pore water pressure.
