Honors World History Mythology (Romans and Greeks) Project
Choose one of the following assignments and complete
Due Thursday, September 23, 2010
Artists Only 1…Vase, Shield, Robe
Research Roman or Greek vases, shields and robes. Make
your own design on paper to be used for one of the
following: a vase, a shield for a hero or a robe for a goddess.
If you choose a robe for a goddess, it must be decorated as
befitting her. This assignment must relate to your character.
You must be an artist to select this assignment. Artistic talent
does count in your grade.
Headlines and Articles
Mythology lends itself to tabloid journalism. Think about
how your character might be represented in a tabloid. Here
are two headlines that would be good for a tabloid
—“Mysterious Rocks Destroy Ships at Sea” or “Baby
Strangles Snake with Bare Hands.” Write a tabloid headline
for your character, then an article that goes with the headline.
You can be very creative, but your article must follow your
character’s traits and/or life. Your headline and article should
be typed. Use your creative skills. You may include an
illustration or photo that fits your article…it does not have to
be hand-drawn.
Artists Only 2…Panel Mural
Create a panel mural depicting one of your favorite stories
about your character. A mural is NOT a collage; it is a
drawing/painting of events in your character’s life. It should
be hand-drawn and colored. You must be an artist to select
this assignment. Artistic talent does count in your grade.
“Dear Aphrodite”
Read the “Dear Abby” column in a newspaper or online.
Write a “Dear Aphrodite” column, complete with questions
from mortals and/or gods and answers from the love goddess,
in the style of “Dear Abby.” Write at least five questions and
answers. They should be typed and may be on continuous
pages as this is a column.
Letters to the Editor
Because letters to the editor are based on current topics, think
about what’s in the news today and make a list. Once you
have a list, brainstorm a specific story about your character
that fits items on that list. Write a letter to the editor
explaining his/her opinion on the topic you choose. Write
three letters and one response from another writer to each
letter. They should be typed and the original letters can be on
continuous pages; the response letters can be as well.
Artists Only 3…Family Tree
Create a “family tree” based on the information you find
about your character’s family and life. Family trees should be
illustrated with pictures and accompanied by short
descriptions of each individual’s respective importance in the
character’s life. This may be hand-drawn on a piece of poster
board. It must be neat and creative. You must be an artist to
select this assignment. Artistic talent does count in your
grade.
Interviews
Interviews are great ways to learn about your character.
Imagine you are a famous reporter and have been given an
exclusive interview with your character. What juicy
information would your readers want to know? Write an
interview with questions and answers that explore your
character’s personality and life. Write at least ten questions
and answers. Your interview should be typed. Be creative.
Artists Only 4…Product Advertisements
Advertisements can send powerful and emotive messages.
Ask yourself, “What product would my character advertise?”
He/she might endorse beauty products, florists, automobiles,
speedy services, clothes or bottled water. Choose one product
and produce a print ad for that character. You must be an
artist to select this assignment. Artistic talent does count in
your grade.
Obituaries
For this activity, read obituaries in the newspaper or online.
Write an obituary for your character. It should be typed, no
less than 250 words long and include important facts such as
cause of death, important events in his/her life and survivors.
Be creative.
Résumés
Look up résumés on the internet and find a style you like.
Write a résumé for your character. Make sure you follow
good résumé format and are creative. This must be typed and
should fit on one page.
Classified Advertisements
The question, “What would a mythological character have to
sell?” can be very enlightening about your character. Make
your own lists which might include thunderbolts, archery
lessons, love potions, dating services, marriage counseling or
muscle fitness. Choose five items to sell and write classified
advertisements for each. They should be typed on separate
sheets and can be illustrated.
