Discussion/Conclusion

Chewing-gum removal is a major environmental problem. Previous work has presented the various
chewing-gum removal machines in order to wipe out the chewing-gum from floors and pavements.
However, these machines are not able to use suction to remove gum without damaging the floor
surface. In our work, we presented a novel chewing-gum removal machine (CGRM) and compared
it with the existing machines, Gumsucker, and Vacu-Gum. We found that the novel chewing-gum
removal machine was successfully able to remove the gum using the suction feature without
damaging the surface of the floor. These findings extend those of Gumbo, who claim that it was
possible to use chemicals to dissolve chewing gum (Gumbo et al., 2002). In addition, the chemicals
we used in our work were non-toxic. This study, therefore, shows that the machines remove gum
without damaging the floor and it does not cause any side effects to the human body. Most notably,
this is the first study to our knowledge to design a chewing-gum removal machine that uses the
suction feature to remove gum and cause no damage to the floor surface. However, there is a
limitation, which is worth mentioning. Although the chewing-gum removal machine (CGRM)
cause no damage to the wooden and stone floor, it caused some damage to the carpeted floor.
Future work should include the possible improvement of the machine by minimizing the damage
to the carpeted floor to zero.
