Worksheet for Grade 9th physics

I. Choose the correct answer from the given alternatives and write the
letter of your answer on the provided space.
1. C Which one of the following equation correctly defined the efficiency of a simple
machine?
VR IMA IMA AMA
A. η= B. η = C. η = D. η =
MA VR AMA IMA
2. A A jackscrew has a lever arm of 40cm and a pitch of 5mm if the efficiency is 30 percent
what force F (effort) is required to lift a load w = 2700N
A. 18N B. 39N C. 12N D. 25N
3. B From question number 2 what is the velocity ratio of the jackscrew?
A. 400 B. 502 C. 357 D. 204
4. B A boy weighs 400N. If he lifts a car of weight 20,000N by applying his weight on a lever
what must be the mechanical advantage of the lever?
A. 20 B. 50 C. 0.02 D. 0.5
5. C Find the velocity ratio of a gear when the number of teeth on the driving is 8 and the
number of teeth on the driven is 16
A. 0.5 B. 4 C. 2 D. 6
II. Work out questions
6. Using a wheel and axle a 400N load can be lifted by a force of 50N applied to the rim of
wheel the radii of the wheel and axle are 8 sec and 6cm respectively determine
GIVEN required
L=400N a,MA=?
E=50N b,VR=?
R=8cm=0.08m c, η=?
r=6cm=0.06m

a, MA=L/E b, VR=R/r

MA =400N/50N VR=8Cm/6Cm

MA = 8 VR=0.8m/0.6m

VR= 1.3

C, η = AMA / VR = 8 / 1.3 = 6.15

7. An iron bar 3m long is used to lift a 60kg the fulcrum is placed 80 cm from the block
a. What is the IMA of the bar?
b. What input force is required?
GIVEN required
dL=80cm a, IMA=?
b, E=?
m=80kg= Bar=dL+dE
Bar=3m 3m=0.8cm+dE
2
g= 10 m /s dE=2.2m

a, IMA=VR
IMA=dE/dL
IMA=2.2m/0.4m
IMA=5.5
The IMA of the bar is 5.5
b, E=?
Load *dL=Efforet*dE
Load=weight , Weight = Gravitiy * mass
L=g*m=10 m2 /s * 60kg
L=600N
Load *dL=Efforet*dE
600N*0.8m=E*2.2m
E=600N*0.8m/2.2m
E=218.18N
B, The input force is equal to 218.18N

8. Suppose the pitch of the screw is 0.1cm and that the effort applied at the end of the spanner
the V.R of the screw?
GIVEN required
P=0.1cm VR=?
VR=2*∏* l /P
Vr=2*3.14* l /0.1
Vr=62.8 *l

9. Can the efficiency of a machine be ever be greater than 100%? Explain

No, because that violates the basic law of conservation of energy. If you're getting
efficiency more than 100%, that means the output energy is greater than the input energy
that means energy is being created and that violates the Fundamental law of energy
conservation which states "Energy can neither be created nor destroyed , it can only be
changed from one form to another ".
Logically speaking , one cannot totally minimize the losses such as frictional losses or heat
losses because ideal cases don't exist.
